edicafion . . . We Californians are proud of our colorful history. lt is an amazing story of a land of peren- nial spring and boundless fertility. The Gold Rush made the state symbolic of a promised land of plenty. Ap hundred years ago thousands traveled from all parts of the world to seek their fortunes in this paradise. These sturdy and courageous peo- ple were the builders of the foundation of our great state. Life in California a hundred years ago had its sunlight and shadow, but it was an abundant life of fascinating experiences. ln this fast moving drama, there was tragedy as well as comedy, hopes and disappointments. Here we see life lived for a few brief years without the restraint of civiliza- tion. Democracy in its true sense flourished in our Golden State of the west and left behind a record of accomplishment that will never be blotted from American history. The glamour of the past has given way to the stern demands of today's economy. Our California, the thirty-first state, has a glorious destiny in the centuries ahead. And to this destiny, spirit of ad- venture, and progress that has made possible the California of today, we dedicate this l95O Cae- rulea. The Editor'
