Once again the challenge of adventure is awakened. With courageous and dauntless heart the crew of our Ship of State sets forth upon the course for l950. Plans are made, courses are cho- sen--all with a certain destination in mind. Every member of the crew stands by to give his pull on the rope at the word of command. Gradually we learn to venture forth, to for- tify our Ship of State, to gauge the weather, and to follow the compass. , Our first report to you contains many pic- tures of interest and beauty for which California is noted. lt is our hope that these pictures will pro- mote a better understandng and a finer apprecia- tion of the Golden State in which we live. We hope you like our spirit of California, our centurian, who wanders in and out through many pages. We have enjoyed working together on this yearbook, and hope you will spend many happy moments looking through the pages of your I 950 Caerulea. The Staff Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union, strong and great! Humanity with all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, ' ls hanging breathless on thy fate! We Californians are proud of our colorful history. lt is an amazing story of a land of peren- nial spring and boundless fertility. The Gold Rush made the state symbolic of a promised land of plenty. Ap hundred years ago thousands traveled from all parts of the world to seek their fortunes in this paradise. These sturdy and courageous peo- ple were the builders of the foundation of our great state. Life in California a hundred years ago had its sunlight and shadow, but it was an abundant life of fascinating experiences. ln this fast moving drama, there was tragedy as well as comedy, hopes and disappointments. Here we see life lived for a few brief years without the restraint of civiliza- tion. Democracy in its true sense flourished in our Golden State of the west and left behind a record of accomplishment that will never be blotted from American history. The glamour of the past has given way to the stern demands of today's economy. Our California, the thirty-first state, has a glorious destiny in the centuries ahead. And to this destiny, spirit of ad- venture, and progress that has made possible the California of today, we dedicate this l95O Cae- rulea. The Editor' . ,Q ,Q wg. ' V :.i 2 V 'S F mug fig' , 5-Q? LIBPAN PoLw1ac.umc uI' simon. clznowledgemenfs Our Ship of State has reached port, and we have finished our last entry. We have had a year of great adventure in our year book creation. We have experienced a great deal of pleasure which in it- self is worth all the time and labor expended. We wish now to express our thanks to those who have helped to make the l950 Caerulea possible. We acknowledge with thanks the coopera- tion of Henderson's Bindery, Arntzen's Photogra- phic Studio, Mr. Leonard E. Graham, Photographer, and Nelson's Engraving Company. An extra vote of thanks, for their incompar- able service, goes to Mr. Adams, Art Advisor, Mr. Meadows, Photography Advisor, Mr. Stribley, Printing Advisor, and Miss Norton, English Advis- or. Lastly to our general advisor, Mr. Claude R. Freeman, goes our message of gratitude for his wonderful cooperation and enthusiasm.
