School Carnival On the evening of the Carnival, a chicken pie supper was served in the school cafeteria from 5:30 until 7:30. Afterwards everyone went to play Bingo or buy something at one of the stands. At 8:00 everyone gathered in the auditorium and the minstrel show began. Both grade and high school participated in this show, and everyone enjoyed the jokes and songs very much. Another attraction of the Carnival was the crowning of the queens. The candidates and their escorts for the grade school were, Linda Coffman and Stevie Belt, first grade, Arlene Huff and Dickie Leamer, second grade, Judy Mason and Larry Smoot, third grade, Jeanne Cooper and David Fields, fourth grade, Barbara Sue Pollard and Tommy Flannigan, fifth grade, and the grade school Queen Jeanette Dana and her King, Buddy Belt, sixth grade, The high school candidates and their es- corts were: Shirley Shelton and Danny Carr, seventh-eighth grade, Beverly Vaught and John D. When the real dean arrives, two or three days later, he is mistaken for a lunatic ,who has recently escaped from a nearby asylum. No won- der some of the students began to doubt their own sanity. But the confusion seems to benefit the love affair of Gary Blaine and his feudin' sweetheart, Una Scanlon, and the student, Dean Brown, despite his ignorance of college ways, wins the friendship and af- fection of Gloria Manson, the college heiress. Gosh all hemlocks, Glory, he says, I ain't had nothin' so good as this happen to me since Pa give me a lamb for my very own: I'll be a hoss's uncle: 37
