Future Homemakers of America Our FHA has forty members. To be a member, each girl must be enrolled in a home economics class or have completed one year of home economics. Thirty new members were initiated into our group this year. Nineteen girls qualified for their Junior Home- maker Degree, Each of these girls received an FHA pin with a key and guard attached. Our officers are: Pre sident-Mary Ann Hyder, Vice-President-Emma Jean Skinner, Secretary and Treasurer- Laura Carter, Historian-Bonnie Crowley, Pianist-Maurine White, Song Leader-Nancy Barnes, Our sponsor is Mrs. Leta McCorkendale and our Chapter Mothers are Mrs. Marion Houghton and Mrs. Mabel Jones. A large percentage of our members and Mrs. McCorkenda1e at- tended the sub-district meeting at Carrolton in October. Polo had charge of the installation. We are very happy to have E-mma Jean Skinner elected as the Sub-District Vice-President. We are plan- ning to attend the district meeting April 14th, at Maryville. We have had many successful activities this year. First of all, we had the initiation of new members to which all the FHA girls' mothers were invited. Next, we had our Christmas Dance, to which the FFA boys and a few other guests were invited. Then we had a Valentine Box Supper to which the FFA boys were invited, At the box supper the girls had an Etiquette Skit which gave them many helpful ideas as to what is Hproperl' To make money this year we have sold pop, popcorn, hot dogs, etc., at all the school activities. From our profits we have pur- chased an electric stove, electric sewing machine, and popcorn popper. F. I-L A. Christmas Dance . Wednesday night, December 20th, the F.H.A. held a Christmas Dance in the school gymnasium. The imembers of the F.F.A. Club were invited, and each F.H.A. girl and F.F.A. boy was permit- ted to invite one guest. The dance was well attended. The gym- nasium was beautifullydecorated. Streamers of many colors hung from the entrance, at one end of the gymnasium was the sign, Merry Christmas F.H.A. Girls , and at the other end was Happy New Year F.F.A. Boys . Everyone danced under soft lights to records of popular music. Refreshments of ice cream and cookies were served. The dance was one of the successes of the year for the F.H.A. Chapter. 30

Something Has Been Added' Teachers and students returning to Polo High School last fall found a change in the appearance of the school neighborhood, The half block just north of the school building, which we had last seen grown up with weeds and brush, had been improved. On the north side of the block a white house had been moved from the lot on which the new grade school was to be erected. Workmen were just completing the garage accompanying the house, and this new home, we were informed, would be the residence of the Superintendent of Polo Schools. On the south side of the block, just opposite the high school building, stood a stocky building of concrete blocks and many win- dows, the new vocational agriculture building. Here the attention of all the boys centered, and the new vocational agriculture course, and the teacher, Mr. Rhodes, became the chief subjects of conver- sation. About forty boys enrolled in the course. Mr. Rhodes put them right to work building the tables, tool cabinets and other equipment needed in working out the various projects which they must under- take as part of their course. They have built-everything from book- shelves and flower racks to hog houses. Mr. Rhodes, a graduate of the University of Missouri, offered courses not only to the schoolboys, but to farmers of the commun- ity who like to come in for help on building plans and for welding classes. Several nights a week the big windows gleam with the bright lights, and the flash of the welding torches and the numerous cars parked near the building tell us a farmers' welding class is in progress. 32
