On.February 10th, the firm of Nlarshall and Brown, of Kansas City, was retained to draw up the plans for this build- ing. The plans were made for a one-story brick building containing six classrooms, an office, a kitchen, combination cafeteria and playroom, janitor storeroom, and rest!- rooms, These plans were accepted by the Board of Building Commission of the State Department of Education. The Polo Board of Education offered the plans for contract bids, and on September 2.8, 1950, a contract for construction was let to the firm of Elliott and Arms, of Richmond, Missouri, Work was immediately begun on the new building. The foundation has been completed, the furnace installed, and the east and west walls have been built as high as the window sills. Weather permitting, work will go ahead rapidly in the future, as most of the material has been purchased and is on the grounds. ,yrs iw, SW f 5 e z 5 I f,.f sliif , 5 K Students and townspeople attend the ground breaking ceremony for the new grade school building. 17 First Grade TOP ROW: Ronald Keith Hill, Betty Marie Pence, Rodney Clevenger, Glenda Coffman, Tommy Wormsley, Lois Jean Richardson. For the first time Home Economics is offered to all four classesg formerly it was offered only to the upper three. The girls really enjoy their work under the direction of Mrs. McCorkendale. This year the Freshmen have made aprons, skirts and blouses. Then they had their breakfast unit. Now they are ready for the advanced sewing unit. The Sophomores have made skirts, arranged flowers, and studied the basic seven. Then they cooked their breakfasts. At the present time they are ready to cook a heavy' breakfast. We have two classes in Home Management. Each class is doing something a little different. They have canned and frozen fruits and vegetables. At Homecoming they made the gown for the Queen. While one class was studying Child Care another class studied Home Nursing, Now both classes are learning to prepare luncheons. The Senior Class has few members but they have been sewing, studying family rela- tionships, and now are learning to prepare dinners. Next year we hope to put in Vocational Home Economics with a three unit kitchen and nearly all the appliances that a happy homemaker would have. This will be quite an ad- dition to the Home Economics Department. 29 Future Homemakers of America Our FHA has forty members. To be a member, each girl must be enrolled in a home economics class or have completed one year of home economics. Thirty new members were initiated into our group this year. Nineteen girls qualified for their Junior Home- maker Degree, Each of these girls received an FHA pin with a key and guard attached. Our officers are: Pre sident-Mary Ann Hyder, Vice-President-Emma Jean Skinner, Secretary and Treasurer- Laura Carter, Historian-Bonnie Crowley, Pianist-Maurine White, Song Leader-Nancy Barnes, Our sponsor is Mrs. Leta McCorkendale and our Chapter Mothers are Mrs. Marion Houghton and Mrs. Mabel Jones. A large percentage of our members and Mrs. McCorkenda1e at- tended the sub-district meeting at Carrolton in October. Polo had charge of the installation. We are very happy to have E-mma Jean Skinner elected as the Sub-District Vice-President. We are plan- ning to attend the district meeting April 14th, at Maryville. We have had many successful activities this year. First of all, we had the initiation of new members to which all the FHA girls' mothers were invited. Next, we had our Christmas Dance, to which the FFA boys and a few other guests were invited. Then we had a Valentine Box Supper to which the FFA boys were invited, At the box supper the girls had an Etiquette Skit which gave them many helpful ideas as to what is Hproperl' To make money this year we have sold pop, popcorn, hot dogs, etc., at all the school activities. From our profits we have pur- chased an electric stove, electric sewing machine, and popcorn popper. F. I-L A. Christmas Dance . Wednesday night, December 20th, the F.H.A. held a Christmas Dance in the school gymnasium. The imembers of the F.F.A. Club were invited, and each F.H.A. girl and F.F.A. boy was permit- ted to invite one guest. The dance was well attended. The gym- nasium was beautifullydecorated. Streamers of many colors hung from the entrance, at one end of the gymnasium was the sign, Merry Christmas F.H.A. Girls , and at the other end was Happy New Year F.F.A. Boys . Everyone danced under soft lights to records of popular music. Refreshments of ice cream and cookies were served. The dance was one of the successes of the year for the F.H.A. Chapter. 30 F. H A. Initiation Party 31 Something Has Been Added' Teachers and students returning to Polo High School last fall found a change in the appearance of the school neighborhood, The half block just north of the school building, which we had last seen grown up with weeds and brush, had been improved. On the north side of the block a white house had been moved from the lot on which the new grade school was to be erected. Workmen were just completing the garage accompanying the house, and this new home, we were informed, would be the residence of the Superintendent of Polo Schools. On the south side of the block, just opposite the high school building, stood a stocky building of concrete blocks and many win- dows, the new vocational agriculture building. Here the attention of all the boys centered, and the new vocational agriculture course, and the teacher, Mr. Rhodes, became the chief subjects of conver- sation. About forty boys enrolled in the course. Mr. Rhodes put them right to work building the tables, tool cabinets and other equipment needed in working out the various projects which they must under- take as part of their course. They have built-everything from book- shelves and flower racks to hog houses. Mr. Rhodes, a graduate of the University of Missouri, offered courses not only to the schoolboys, but to farmers of the commun- ity who like to come in for help on building plans and for welding classes. Several nights a week the big windows gleam with the bright lights, and the flash of the welding torches and the numerous cars parked near the building tell us a farmers' welding class is in progress. 32 Future Farmers of America Our F.F.A. Chapter was organized October 13, 1950. There are thirty-six boys who are active members. One of our activities was the sale of tickets on a registered Duroc gilt to be given away at the High School Carnival. Mr. Dean Norman gave our Chapter a registered Hampshire ewe lamb in appreciation of our blocking some of his ewes to be sold at the Northwest Missouri Hampshire Bred Ewe Sale. The F.F.A. Barnwarming was held on December 13th. Our Queen was Mary Katherine Mayes, and the Princesses were Maxine Wooden and Anna Mae Barnes. The Chapter has sponsored two programs this year. It sponsored a play The Adorable Imp , presented by the Cowgill Methodist Church, and The K.F.E.Q. Home Talent Show, which was broad- cast over K.F.E.Q. on January 20th. We have had one basketball game with Stet in which we won by a score of 40 to Z6. A 'Father and Son Banquet will be held in the near future. The boys will bring their fathers. The Queen, the Princesses, the school board, and Mr. Peterson will be invited guests. Another event to be held in the future will be a social meeting with the F.H.A. in return for- the box supper they had for the F.F.A. Our Chapter will also put on a radio skit on station K.F.E.Q. on June Znd. A judging team from our Chapter will participate in a local judging contest to be held at Hamilton on March 28th. The district judging contest will be held at Maryville on April 13th and 14th. Max Creason and Hugh Dean Teegarden will be the' delegates to at- tend the meeting at Columbia held on April 19th and 20th. We also expect to participate in a Public Speaking Contest at Excelsior Springs, April 4th, V 33 FIRST ROW: Ramona Wheeler, Max Creason, Sue Smith, Wally Crawford, SECOND ROW: Bobbie Smith, Barbara Shelton, Sam Grove, Gene Gastineau, Russell Estes, Anna Mae Barnes, Rachel K. The girls wore Dad's overalls, shirts and plow shoes, an onion necklace, no make-up, hair pin-curled on one side with a green bow in the middle, and each girl carried a baby bottle. The boys wore Mom's dress and hat, lipstick, rouge and powder, and carried a doll. ,Each Freshman wore a sign which read, Ii am a green Freshman . When they met a Senior they had to bow and say, l'm only a green Freshman. The Seniors gave an all school party in honor of the Freshmen Wednesday night. This is an annual occurrence., There was a musical quiz for the Freshmen, Sue Smith and Nancy Barnes sang Sometime , and we square and round danced. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served, Coronation On Thursday night, October 19th, the Coronation of the football queen took place in the auditorium. In the middle of the auditorium was the courtyard where the queen and her royalty would march on their way to the throne. All at once a blast came from the heralds, Shirley Hoover and Joyce Watson, as they played the ir trumpets announcing the procession of the queen and her royalty. Shirley and Joyce, representing the fourth grade, wore bright red herald costumes trim- med in gold. Then came the prancing baton twirlers in their white satin cos- tumes and plumed hats. They were Eloise Hogan, Lois Davis, Barbara Pence, Nancy Starcher, Shirley Wormsley and Connie Hunt. Following the baton twirl- ers, Max Creason, master of ceremonies, announced the coming of the attendants, Peggy Trout and Jackie Garner, first grade, Linda Crowley and Bert Vaught, second grade, Judy Mason, crown bearer, and her escort, Larry Herod, third grade, Patricia Murphy and Leroy Huff, fifth grade, Sue Hoover and Charles Belt, sixth grade, Anita Lotz and Jimmy Hoover, seventh grade, Nancy Cawthon and Randy Yoakum, eighth grade, Winona Myers and Sammy Grove, Freshman Class, Sharon Houghton and James Morgan, Sophomore Class, Mary Katherine Mayes and Vincent Blackwell, Junior Class, Maxine Wooden and Harold Davis, Senior Class. The girl attendants wore beautiful formals, the boys up to the fifth grade wore dark trousers, white shirts, and black bow ties. The scene was very beau- tiful and the procession moved to the strains of soft music played by Mrs. Eula Schaeffer. Then came the big moment as Max announced the charming princess, Patricia Houghton, in a beautiful deep rose formal, with her escort Lynn Robison. Next came pretty, bright-eyed princess, Peggy Campbell in a gorgeous orchid taffeta formal, with her escort Leon Edwards. Then Max announced beautiful Queen Ramona Wheeler and her King, Gene Gastineau. She appeared clad in school colors, a white gown trimmed in green velvet bows, a green velvet cape, very decorative with its trimming of silver sequins. Gene, her King and honor- ary football captain, crowned her, and Leon Edwards, co-captain, presented her with a gift of pearls from the football team. A short program followed, then came the recessional of the Quee.n and her party. 36 School Carnival On the evening of the Carnival, a chicken pie supper was served in the school cafeteria from 5:30 until 7:30. Afterwards everyone went to play Bingo or buy something at one of the stands. At 8:00 everyone gathered in the auditorium and the minstrel show began. Both grade and high school participated in this show, and everyone enjoyed the jokes and songs very much. Another attraction of the Carnival was the crowning of the queens. The candidates and their escorts for the grade school were, Linda Coffman and Stevie Belt, first grade, Arlene Huff and Dickie Leamer, second grade, Judy Mason and Larry Smoot, third grade, Jeanne Cooper and David Fields, fourth grade, Barbara Sue Pollard and Tommy Flannigan, fifth grade, and the grade school Queen Jeanette Dana and her King, Buddy Belt, sixth grade, The high school candidates and their es- corts were: Shirley Shelton and Danny Carr, seventh-eighth grade, Beverly Vaught and John D. Patton, jr., Freshman Class, Sharon Houghton and Bobby Smith, Sophomore Class, Mary Katherine Mayes and Max Creason, Junior Class, and the high school Queen Margaret Cain from the Senior Class and her King, Wayne Richards They Gave Him A Co-ed The Junior Play, They Gave Him a Co-ed , is based on the confusion arising in a college when a new student by the name of Dean Brown is mistaken for the new Dean, Charles Bradley Brown. Dean Brown is welcomed by the students and the Registrar, is as- signed a secretary, and given S200 advance on his salary. When the real dean arrives, two or three days later, he is mistaken for a lunatic ,who has recently escaped from a nearby asylum. No won- der some of the students began to doubt their own sanity. But the confusion seems to benefit the love affair of Gary Blaine and his feudin' sweetheart, Una Scanlon, and the student, Dean Brown, despite his ignorance of college ways, wins the friendship and af- fection of Gloria Manson, the college heiress. Gosh all hemlocks, Glory, he says, I ain't had nothin' so good as this happen to me since Pa give me a lamb for my very own: I'll be a hoss's uncle: 37 RAMONA WHEELER Our Football Queen 38 Scenes From Our Homecoming . ,A W 55 ',,:x--5 Q, , k ,1 I ,M -ffm' f' - In fair -ws' fx , , M. - f -news, f - me if New 3: 0 ,ff W ' :Q not I 1 Q35 Q X Queen Ramona And Her Princesses 0 U R H n O M E ,nf C wi , 0 M -I N G D A N C E 39 nf ..
