V' y. 1 Vg ' A The C cle Class History In the fall of 1931 fifty mne tremblmg and shghtly nerxous freshmen enrolled ln Polo Communlty Hlgh The flrst two weeks vxell they re sort of dlm 1n our mem ory noxx for vxe xx ere rather confused as to what we were to do and where to go next But we finally learned the routlne and settled down xxxth the ldea of makmg good old P C H S proud of us Yes slr we were gomg to xxork hald and earn some honor and fame for our Alma Mater Our first lmportant step was the electlon of class OHICCTS The task of bemg presxdent was gnx en to Call Smxth wxth Ruth Johnston 1ss1st1ng as v1ce presxdent and Robert Hoover as secretary and treasurer As our Student Council members, we elected Ruth Johnston and Don Unger October 4th That xvxll stand out m our memory fo1 ex er, for as you can prob ably guess xve xx ere 1n1t1ated' We really became acqualnted at our class plcnlcs but It seems as lf Old Man Weather plotted agamst us for he ordel ed a dxenchxng shovx er for our last plcmc In the clubs muslc groups athlet1c teams and on the honor roll xve freshmen played a pxomment part In our sophomore year we elected Merle Maxwell as presldent Nellle Pearl Stackpole VICE pres1dent and Jean Allsopp secretary and treasurer Velva Gatz and Don Unger were elected to represent us on the Student Councll ThlS xx as rather an uneventful year but we nexertheless played an 1mportant part ln the extra currlcular HCtlVltleS In our thxrd year Rxchard Adams was glven the dnfxcult task of bemg pres1dent whlle Donald Duslng was V109 presldent and Madehne French secretary and treas mgs We were xery proud of the class rmgs xve ordered and equally so of oul .Tumor Play Joy vxhxch was glven Apr1l 26 In the 1nter class basketball tournaments the Jun1ors stole the show by vxlnnmg both the boys and glrls tltles In May xxe xx ere hosts to the Senlor Class and faculty members on a crulse aboard the S S Marco at our Jumor Senlor Banquet September 1940' We were now sen1o1s Just one more year NV1th1Il the halls of P C H S As our class OSICCFS we elected James Waters pres1dent W1lm1th Elam XICE presldent and Betty Cross secretary 'md treasurer Velxa Gatz and Rlchard Adams were on the student Councll Velva for the thxrd consecutwe year Wh1Ch IS an other record Thxs was a xery busy year On October 15 'md 16 xxe had our CYCLE plctures taken On December Sth we presented our play Puze P1gs before a large aud lence We also had the task of complllng th1s 1941 edxtlon of our annual the CYCLE On March 21 xxe attended the Senlor Voc ltxonal Conference at Rochelle to learn what was expected of us ln our respeetlve chosen careers On May 16th we xxere P C H S hosts for the last tlme at the Senlor Ball, cer talnly a gala affan At last Baccalaureate on May 25 and then on May 29 Commencement when 46 of us recexx ed ou1 dlplomas And so vxe malxe our ex1t from P C H S after four happy years together , - . . . Y I - The Cycle Debatmg Three members from last year s squad with five new members made up the 1940 1941 debate squad After several weeks of study the teams met their first opposition when on December 8 they competed fax orably rn an invitational non decrs on tourna ment held at Rockford in whrch twenty three schools from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin participated The month of January found the teams rn non decision clashes with Freeport and Sterling preparatory for the first big event of the season the Augustana College Tour nament at Rock Island held on February 5 and 6 Although the key speaker of both teams were kept from attending this tournament due to illness the teams with a make shrft line up participated against many strong teams from Illinois Iowa and Missouri They gained valuable experience and scored one victory over Rock Island The high point of the season was reached when the teams completed the Trade NV1nds Conference Schedule rn a tournament at Naperxille on March no and found themselves holding down second place rn the final standlngs with Mendota in first place DeKalb Princeton Sandwich and Morris followed in the standings The af firmatrve Helen Landis and Alleen Hostettcr defeated DeKalb Sandwich and Mor ris losing to Mendota and Princeton The negative John Newcomer and Madeline French defeated Mendota Princeton and Morris losing to DeKalb and Sand vrch The climaic of the season was reached when the teams competed rn the district set an all time high for Polo debating by placrnd third with East High of Rockford first and Freeport second In addrt on to this the Polo teams had the best record of Class B schools Cthose with enrollment under 6003 and thus were aw nrqed the Class B debate championship for the northern district of Illinois This was accomplished when the teams defeated DeKalb Mendota and East High of Rockford losing Clos decisions to Sandwich and Freeport The only defeat suffered by the ehampron Roc' ford debaters was at the hands of the Polo negative composed of John New comer and Madeline French who was participating rn her last high school deb ite The question for debate xx 'rs Resolved that the power of the f deral ow ernment should be rncreased Doris Donaldson and Ted C1 url shank served as alternates for the affirmative and negative respectrx ely and saw considerable action especially at the Augustana tourna ment Philip White and James Buck the freshmen members wor ed with the squad all d baters being coached by Mr Carl Thokey I ' , . . . , Y V . . . . y - . i - . , v - ' .
