They had a young, and small team consisting of one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and two freshmen. Coach Boardman said he enjoyed working with these seven girls because they never gave up. Teamwork was the key to the victories the Cubs achieved, while much improvement was gained throughout the season. The team would like to thank Amy Hanquist for her leadership this year.

Front Row: Duane Baack, Joseph Harless, Terry Carlstrom, John McMann, Gail Klingsporn, Kevin Lukas. The 1985-86 boys basketball season was two different seasons in one. Early we showed signs of being a very good team. The fourth game of the year we beat Exeter 62 - 59. This was a big win as Exeter went on to the state championship title in D-1. Then some hard times followed, as we lost decisively to Osceola and Rising City and closer games to Clarks, Marquette, McCool Junction and Hampton. We entered conference tournament with a record of 3 - 8 and this is when our season started to turn around. We beat Bradshaw in the first round but then lost in a rematch with Hampton by one point. The remainder of the season was very exciting. We won six of our last eight games. Those wins included beating Rising City, Hordville, in sub districts, and McCool Junction in district finals. This took our team to state for the first time since 1979. The first round of state paired us against Lexington St Ann, who qualified with a 19 - 1 record. The game was hard fought but Lexington St. Ann was the better team that night and went on to capture the state runner up title. The Polk Cub squad of 1985 - 86 was a young squad as eight lettermen will return for the 86 - 87 year. There are two seniors who’s leadership and contribution to the team will be greatly missed. Edd Coover has been a three year starter and our leading scorer the last two years. Reuel Anderson has contributed to the total team effort for four years and filled a role on the team that will be very difficult to replace.
