Edd Coover runs for a first down. Paul Van Housen rushes toward the endzone. The Cub defense tackles a Hampton ball carrier. Entering the 1985 season with a very inexperienced team proved to be the difference, as the Cubs fell a game short of a .500 season. After losing the first two games to eventual play-off contenders, McCool and Giltner, the Cubs got back on the winning track, as they edged Rising City 20-14, and blanked Marquette 30-0. The Fairmont game was by far the most interesting game of the year, as the Tigers won 19-14, on a questionable call in the final seconds of play. The Cubs won the statistic battle, but Bradshaw managed to win the score board battle, as the Bulldogs edged the Cubs 16-14. With three games remaining, the Cubs managed to pick-up wins from Benedict, and Hampton, but fell short to Exeter, also a play-off contender. Post season honors included: Bill Ziegelbein - Honorable Mention All-State, lst team All-Conference Center and Linebacker, Ist team All-Area Linebacker, and was voted “Most Valuable Player” by his teammates. Bill was also co-captain, along with Edd Coover. Kelly Adams was selected Honorable Mention All-Conference End. Edd Coover and Reuel Anderson were the only two seniors on the squad, and were selected Honorable Mention All-Area. John McMann was voted “Most Valuable Freshman.” The Junior Varsity, under the direction of Don Ritta, compiled a 2 wins and 1 loss. The Jr. High, coached by Craig Ratzlaff recorded a 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. Edd Coover scrambles from the Hampton defenders.
