The juniors are successfully active in most of the extra curricular activities; football, volleyball, basketball, track, speech, drama, National Honor Society, student council, and chorus. They’re enthusiastically preparing for their final year at PHS and hope to use their knowledge from these educational experiences to the best of the abilities in future situations. The junior class felt that financing the junior senior prom was a challenge but well worth it. Selling magazines to the surrounding communities was their main financial aid. A few comments from the juniors at PHS: “T feel this year has been a big success, but I’m anxiously looking forward to next year.” “It’s been a great year, and I’ve had fun partying with my friends!” “This has been a much harder year, but I’ve matured and learned to take on more responsibilities.” “T feel we've made a lot of great accomplishments. We should be proud of ourselves and celebrate all summer long!” They also felt that their relationships and their determination to succeed were the major components in the successful year of ’85-'86 Se SS t “a4 iL : f . oe Pres. Sylvia Veit Kevin Ang Duane Baack REQPE We the Freshmen class were not too busy as far as money making projects this year, but we kept busy adapting to new friends and to a new style “High School.” We gained two new classmates, Lynette Wimmer, and Karen Ziegelbein. Both girls came from small schools so they enjoy having more kids in their classes. While some are satisfied with small classes, others find it boring, and wish there were more kids, and still others like it just the way it is. Out of school some of the kids enjoy participating in sports, hunt- ing, babysitting, or just helping out on the farm, but there is one activity we all agree on, “hanging out with our friends uptown. Though we weren’t too busy this year we enjoyed our first year of high school and are ready to give the sophomore position a try for a year. 18 Robin Cerny Julie Edwards Kevin Love Lynette Wimmer EIGHTH, SEVENTH, AND SIXTH BACK ROW: Kevin Miller, Eric Cole, Dale Van Housen, Rich Ow- ens, Chad Adams, Steve Hendricks, Tonya Wimmer, Brenda Van Hous- en. The year started off on a positive note with the Cubs defeating the McCool Mustangs in two sets. Throughout the rest of the season the Cubs had problems playing as a team. We were a young team and we made the mistakes that a young team makes. The Cubs played well in their games, yet when it came down to the game point, we could not handle the pressure. Ending the season on a positive note, in the district playoffs, the Cubs defeated the Mon- roe Mustangs, whom were rated high in the state. After defeating the Mustangs in two sets, the Cubs won the right to play the Rising City Terriers in the next round. However, the Rising City team proved too much for the Cubs. The Cubs lost in two sets, but played hard and had a right to be proud of their effort. : « ‘ Junior Varsity Back Row: Coach Vest, Roni Harless, Julie Johnson, Renee Bankson. Entering the 1985 season with a very inexperienced team proved to be the difference, as the Cubs fell a game short of a .500 season. After losing the first two games to eventual play-off contenders, McCool and Giltner, the Cubs got back on the winning track, as they edged Rising City 20-14, and blanked Marquette 30-0. The Fairmont game was by far the most interesting game of the year, as the Tigers won 19-14, on a questionable call in the final seconds of play. The Cubs won the statistic battle, but Bradshaw managed to win the score board battle, as the Bulldogs edged the Cubs 16-14. With three games remaining, the Cubs managed to pick-up wins from Benedict, and Hampton, but fell short to Exeter, also a play-off contender. Post season honors included: Bill Ziegelbein - Honorable Mention All-State, lst team All-Conference Center and Linebacker, Ist team All-Area Linebacker, and was voted “Most Valuable Player” by his teammates. Bill was also co-captain, along with Edd Coover. Kelly Adams was selected Honorable Mention All-Conference End. Edd Coover and Reuel Anderson were the only two seniors on the squad, and were selected Honorable Mention All-Area. John McMann was voted “Most Valuable Freshman.” The Junior Varsity, under the direction of Don Ritta, compiled a 2 wins and 1 loss. The Jr. High, coached by Craig Ratzlaff recorded a 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. Edd Coover scrambles from the Hampton defenders. The 1985-86 Polk girls’ basketball season saw the team battle to a 5-13 record. They had a young, and small team consisting of one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and two freshmen. Coach Boardman said he enjoyed working with these seven girls because they never gave up. Teamwork was the key to the victories the Cubs achieved, while much improvement was gained throughout the season. The team would like to thank Amy Hanquist for her leadership this year. Early we showed signs of being a very good team. The fourth game of the year we beat Exeter 62 - 59. This was a big win as Exeter went on to the state championship title in D-1. Then some hard times followed, as we lost decisively to Osceola and Rising City and closer games to Clarks, Marquette, McCool Junction and Hampton. We entered conference tournament with a record of 3 - 8 and this is when our season started to turn around. We beat Bradshaw in the first round but then lost in a rematch with Hampton by one point. The remainder of the season was very exciting. We won six of our last eight games. Those wins included beating Rising City, Hordville, in sub districts, and McCool Junction in district finals. This took our team to state for the first time since 1979. The first round of state paired us against Lexington St Ann, who qualified with a 19 - 1 record. The game was hard fought but Lexington St. Ann was the better team that night and went on to capture the state runner up title. The Polk Cub squad of 1985 - 86 was a young squad as eight lettermen will return for the 86 - 87 year. There are two seniors who’s leadership and contribution to the team will be greatly missed. Edd Coover has been a three year starter and our leading scorer the last two years. Reuel Anderson has contributed to the total team effort for four years and filled a role on the team that will be very difficult to replace. It’s a... The girls also finished in 8th place at the state meet. Amber Anderson set a new school record in the 3200 Mile run, with a time of 12:06, which placed her second in the state meet. Sylvia Veit set two school records in the state meet, she ran the 800 mile dash in a time of 2:24.8, for a 5th place finish. Also Sylvia won the 1600 mile run, in a time of 5:26.1. Twenty boys completed the track season. We were able to win the Bradshaw invite, and finished runner up at the Marquette Invite. Paul Van Housen placed 6th at the state meet in 400 mile dash, to score our only point, which also set a new school record. Also during the season Paul set a new school record in the 100 mile and 200 mile dashes. Joseph Harless ran a 4:47 1600 mile run at state to set a new school record. Gail Klingsporn set a new school record in the 3200 mile run with a time of 11:04. Jerry Sagehorn set a school record in the high jump of 6'0”. Both the boys and girls had a successful season, and with only two seniors on the squad, we are expecting another successful season in 1987. Dan Wolfe JR. The 85-86 school year brought changes to the Polk music program. This year the joint sharing program with Marquette Public Schools was implemented. The programs were headed by Mr. Mohorcic; band, and Mr. Korensky; choir. This year students had a chance to interact with their friends from Marquette on an academic level, as well as on a social level. Old friendships were renewed, and new ones were started. Overall, we feel the shared programs had a very positive input to every student’s music education. We feel that what was started this year is a very positive and exciting move towards a stronger music program. We hope that the positive attitudes started this year will continue in the future. This event marks your departure from childhood into the adult world. Our societal values are such that you will be expected to become a productive member of the adult world upon receipt of that magical piece of paper called a “diploma.” This implies that you must have all of the information, skills, and values that we at Polk High School have tried to instill in you. What you were in high school no longer matters. The only thing of importance is what you will become. Only those who have the ability to set goals and the determination to achieve them will be deemed successful in the world of tomorrow.
