Time was balanced between extra curricular activities as well as bake raffles for fund raisers. The time and hard work that went into the Prom was a lot of fun and fortunately it proved to be a success. We look forward to our senior year at Polk High but will miss the class of 85. Although we lost Cindy Kroger and Darin Johnson, we gained Chamane Anderson and Lisa Seivert as our new classmates. Our class also gained Gerry Sagehorn and Gail Klignsporn from the Emmanuel Lutheran School. The class planned some fun things to do to raise money. Nobody ever said things would always be easy, however one must always continue to try and should look to the positive whenever possible. The following “prayer” was shared with me some time ago, I share it with you as you encounter the unknown. Prayer for Bad Times Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life. | don’t ask for an easy place in the lineup. Put me anywhere you need me. I| only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have. If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment. Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle. And help me Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game. May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules. Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I’m benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game too. Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal. And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that I didn’t let you down. Larry M. Lindquist Principal: Keith McMann A high school education is a unique experience. It is the time when young people make the transition to the adult world. The high school years are the time to lay a solid foundation for future success. Education is a sharing of ideas and opportunities between student and teacher. Ultimately the greatest success comes to those who are bold enough to grasp the challenges offered by the teaching staff. Education is not a passive experience, it comes to those who actively participate to the fullest. The 1984 volleyball season found the Polk Cubs coming up just a bit short of accomplishing their goal of a trip to the state tournament. After a season that was characterized by a win one-lose one swing, the Cubs found themselves on the losing end of the sub-district final. This was a season that saw the team learn about the importance of pulling together as the season progressed. Individuals earned honors at the all tournament, all conference, all area and all state levels — as a result of the team playing together as a unit. Thanks must go to this year’s seniors for helping to lay a good foundation for the younger players to build on in future years. Improvement of the 1983 1-8 record to a winning season of 5 wins, 4 losses did not come easy for the 1984 Polk Cubs. Five of the eleven Crossroads Conference teams had winning seasons with Giltner taking top honors as the D-2 state champs. After winning the first 3 games, the Cubs fell to Hampton and Rising City in two very tough defensive battles. Getting back on the winning track, Benedict and Faimont were the Cubs’ next victims! Traveling to Giltner with a very positive attitude was soon to be shattered as Giltner proved to be the number I team in the state. The final game of the season with Marquette was played with a lot of pride and emotions as mental mistakes seemed to be the difference and Marquette defeated Polk 26-6. Post season honors included: Brian Dose - Honorable Mention All-State, 2nd team All-Conference, Ist team All-Area, and also recognized to the 1000 yd. rusher club. Brian was voted “‘Most Valuable Player” by his teammates. Brian was also co-captain. Craig Van Housen - Honorable Mention All-State, 2nd team All-Conference, Honorable Mention All-Area and 1000 yd. rusher club. Craig was a co-captain. Bob MacDonald - Ist team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-Area. Bill Zieglebein - 2nd team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-Area as a sophomore. The future for the Cubs looks very bright as Don Ritta directed his reserves to 3 wins I loss for the season. The Jr. High, coached by Craig Ratzilaff also had a successful season, finishing with a 2 wins 1 loss and I tie mark. Defense ready for action! For two weeks the Lady Cubs were in the top 10 in Lincoln and Omaha papers. They finished third in the conference with a record of 8-2. Only 10 young ladies finished the season and all improved throughout the year. It was an enjoyable year for both Coach Leigh and Coach Best. The teamwork and senior leadership were most of the reason the team had a winning season. ; . a Zé a’ a ; . . min te: ’ Back Row: Coach Ritta, James Harless, Reuel Anderson, Edd Coover, Craig Van Housen, Brian Dose, Steve Norquest, Coach Ratzlaff. Sink It, Craig! BASKETBALL Fight for it Brian! This page sponsored by ADVENTURELAND VIDEO, York, NE Jerry Karen Foulk The 1984-85 boys basketball season was one of many close games. The most exciting was the first contest against Silver Creek that had James Harless making a basket as time ran out in the third overtime for the winning points. The boys finished fifth in the conference standings with a 4-6 conference record. The overall record of 6-10 doesn’t really show the competitive spirit that this team had. For the season Polk averaged 52 points a game while our opponents averaged 54 points. That statistic is more realistic on how hard fought the games were in the 16 game schedule. The seniors gave us leadership throughout the season. They continued to improve up through the final game. I'd like to thank our graduating ball players for their effort and dedication to the Polk High basketball program and wish them the best of luck. Streeetch Bill!
