Christian Fairmont Marquette Bradshaw Hordville Giltner McCool Benedict Hampton If summing up the 1983 football season in one _ word, “Improvement” would fit very appropriately! The Cubs started out with playoff bound Nebraska Christian, losing 63-0. Determination and the desire to win gave the Cubs the reputation of a hard hitting team that had too much “heart” to lay down and die, no matter what the circumstances were. As the season progressed the Cubs broke the lost column and defeated Hordville in a very impressive 52-32 victory. The Cubs ended the season in a hard fought battle with the Hampton Hawks, the Hawks winning 42-18. The football squad numbers were very impressive as 25 boys participated in a year of rebuilding under a new coaching staff. Three seniors recording their final season as a Polk Cub are Brian Tonniges, James Fisher, and Jason Redman. A big addition this year to the improvement of the Polk athletic program is the weight room, which will be used a great deal by all students. Despite a midseason slump that resulted in five straight losses the team finished with a 11-7 mark and became the first volleyball team from Polk to win the district tournament. The young ladies displayed the teamwork and unselfishnes that are necessary if individual honors are to be garnered. Ranging from all-state, all-tournament, _all- conference and area selections the young ladies of Polk were recognized as a fine volleyball team. The record of 5-12 says we had a losing season. This is not true. There were many times when players could have quit, but they never did. As a team we always fought back and learned how to become competitive. The leadership and positive attitude of our seniors was a very important part of our character development. The underclassmen can use this example in years to come. What was gained in physical and mental development makes the 1983-84 Polk Cubs winners. 44 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : - . , el ah ay S$ 5 9 , iu OL Oe, OL a st ag | 43; | VARSITY - Back Row: Russ Best, Lisa Bankson, Susanne Miller, Sandy Sagehorn, Ruth Dose, Jane Johnson, Chris Leigh, Front Row: Leanne Lind, Jodi Widga, Sarah Lindburg, Lynne Sandell, Amy Hanquist, Jennifer Widga. But fifteen young ladies proved they had the determination and dedication to make a great season. The ladies finished the season with a 12-7 record and a District Championship which was the first in the history, of Polk High School. They fell one game short of going to state by losing to Rising City in the Regionals. This years team was a defensive club. Our offense was generated by our defense. Wha t was especially enjoyable about the year was the desire to win together as a team. The team fired each other up which is very unusual in girls basketball. Because of this general unselfishness, the lady cubs went very far, not only in the season, but in life.
