We got a taste of planning our time with schoolwork, athletics, and drama. For fund raising cake raffles and selling spirit buttons proved to be profitable. At the beginning of the 2nd semester we were fortunate enough to gain a new student, Amber Anderson. We hope she’ll like it here. I would like to send you out in the world with the following challenge: BE Be understanding to your enemies. Be loyal to your friends. Be strong enough to face the world each day. Be weak enough to know you cannot be everything alone. Be generous to those who need your help. Be frugal with what you need yourself. Be wise enough to know you do not know everything. Be foolish enough to believe in miracles. Be willing to share your joys. Be willing to share the sorrows of others. Be a leader when you see a path others have missed. Be a follower when you are shrouded by the mists of uncertainty. Be the first to congratulate an opponent who succeeds. Be the last to criticize a colleague who fails. Be sure where your next step will fall, so that you will not stumble. Be sure of your final destination, in case you are going the wrong way. Be loving to those who love you. Be loving to those who do not love you, and they may change. Above all, be yourself. Larry M. PROM Don't Stop Believing” was the theme f he 1983 Polk Junior-Senior prom held on April 16 at 6 in grade school gymnasium. The banquet area was enclosed in maroon and pink streamers set off by a balloon chandelier ceiling decoration. In the center of the gym flowed a garden fountain in a pool of floating maroon and pink flowers. Other attractions included a wishing well and a gazebo which also served as the setting where pictures were taken Candlelight and soft music created a romantic atmosphere during the meal which consisted of salad bar, ham, augratin potatoes, corn, , and frozen strawberry dessert. The meal was served by sophomores Ruth Dose, Connie Nyberg, Jodi Widga, Brian Dose, Steve Norquest, and Craig VanHousen. Jennifer Widga was the toastmistress, Lisa Bankson gave the welcome, Lynné Sandell and Jane Johnson read the class prophecy, Kristi Hueftle gave the seniors’ Toast of Thanks, and Pastor Tom Larson led the invocation and benediction rerwnoon Back Row (L-R): Darren Shenk, Craig VanHousen, Steve Anderson, Brian Tonniges, Jim Fisher, Jason Redman, Greg Dose. The 1982 football season ended with a 3-6 win-lost record. Guided by the senior leadership of Greg Dose and Darren Schenk, I would consider this a winning season. Throughout the year, the team had its ups and downs, but many accomplishments were achieve d by the boys that didn’t appear on the scoreboard. The hidden desire to say I can work with my fellow teammates in any condition to the best of my ability. To dig deep inside and find that little extra it takes to be a winner. The 1982 football team has placed another block on the foundation of future teams at Polk. With-much talent returning, look out for the Cubs in ’83. Coach Doud Football Scores WE Neb. The Cub’s 82-83 basketball season seemed as though it was going to be an exact duplicate of last year’s season as the Cubs lost every game before Christmas break. Following the bleak, the inexperienced Cubs began to show improvement, winning 3 of their remaining 11 games, and ending up with a final record of 3-15 on Conference play, the Cubs compiled a record of 2-7 Leading the way this year for the Cubs were Greg Dose and Brian Tonniges. Senior, Greg Dose, the team's floor leader, ended up with 220 total points. Greg averaged 12 points throughout the season and will be missed a great deal next season, especially for his leadership on the court. For his efforts, Greg received Honorable Mention, Golden- rod Conference. The Cub’s leading scorer was Brian Tonniges who scored 232 total points, averaging 13 points per game. Brian also received Honorable Mention. Greg and Darren will be the only two not returning for Coach Parsley’s promising 83-84 basketball squad. A team is a family that sticks together as one, if we do something wrong or if we do a job well done! The season is over now and our lives must go on, We have many more goals we have not yet come upon! Yesterday is now left as a memory we can now share, but we learned it wasn’t just the game, but Friends we found out, who care! Thanks for making our last year fun! The Seniors The girls’ basketball team finished the season at 15-4, and tied for 2nd in the conference at 7-2. In an overview of the season I was very pleased with everyone’s performance throughout the season. I felt those individuals who started the season with strong determina- tion finished the season that way; and those individuals who worked into the system finished right along with those who finished strong. I always felt that when I began working with these kids that we were going to improve, as for the Seniors they went 3-14; 10-10; 15-4; finishing their career at 28-28. I really enjoyed having the leadership qualities not only in my Seniors but with my younger players. I can see that this shows dedication and desire for always wanting improvement with in the team.
