Local Polk is a community that started in 1906 as a speculative venture near the railroad. Today it is a community largely based upon agriculture. Polk lias its own school system, several fine churches, and a prospering business community. The following pictures are illustrations of Polk at the turn of the century. One of the business firms found in Polk in 1912 would be the F.C. Garretson Company. Garretson sold musical in- struments and repaired time- pieces for local residents. Pictured is Garretson’s crew mloading supplies from the railroad. A barnshow held in Polk in 1911 attracted scores of people with their horses and buggies. Cars were in the community but horses were much more popular. 4

History (TOP PICTURE) The Polk band as pictured in its early days could be seen before many ball games in their striking new uniforms helping to build team spirit. The ball park was situated where the present day hotel now stands. (BOTTOM PICTURE) The modern con- venience of refrigeration could not be found in many communities at the turn of the cen- tury. Many ice companies made a profit by storing ice from the winter for use in the summer. Pictured are members of the Myers Company cutting ice at his pond. 5
