Text from Pages 1 - 84 of the 1965 volume:

POLK HIGH SCHOOL 1965 Polk, Nebraska Co-Editor Barbara Glasser Co-Editor Vance Stohl DEDICATION With deepest gratitude and appreciation for the many hours he has unselfishly devoted to the upkeep of our school, we, the seniors of 1965, sincerely dedicate our yearbook to Charles Norquest, our custodian. faculty I Goals and Opportunities The future of mankind will be determined by the academic pursuits of this generation. The preservation of our way of life and freedom for all mankind depends on the learning and how we use it. Learning alone will not suffice; learning directed toward the aid of all and with an unselfish interest can accomplish this. Give everyone an opportunity to benefit from your learning and you give everyone an opportunity to teach you as well. Be able to use these tools and with the help of God make for a better world. I know this class and the student body has the ability to do so. Principal, William E. Thompson Man accomplishes little without goals. The only thing that comes without any goal or without any effort is old age. Opportunities arise each day: none is ever lost-- the other fellow takes those that we we let go by. It's not always the man who makes no mistakes, Nor always the one who can get all the breaks; Not even the one who appears such great shakes, But the one who can show that he has wnat it takes.'' Most of all it takes a wise use of what we are each given free and equally: Twenty-six letters in the alphabet Twenty-four hours in a day. How strange the same tools are giv'n wise men and fools, But they don't use these tools the same way. May 1 suggest the following as some important things to remember in setting goals and using the opportunities which arise to reach the proposed goals: the value of time, the success of perseverance, the pleasure of work- ing, the worth of the character, the power of kindness, the influence of example, the obligation of duty, the wis- dom of economy, the virtue of patience, the sound of laughter, the joy of originating, and the thrill of doing it. Best wishes to you, seniors, as you set new goals and use opportunities which you will be meeting each day to attain the worthwhile ones. Superintendent, Walter C. Only seven of these have gone through school together. The original seventeen were: Eddie Ruziska, Dennis Carlstrom, Merlin Green, Sharon Cohagen, Gary Stevens, Bonnie Litty, Coleen Paterson, Karen Funk, Dennis Widga, Stephen Gustafson, Kathy Thomas, Bill Nelson, Linda Kisler, Steve Flodman, Connie Jones, Gene Meerkatz, Steve Woods, Mrs. Reynor was the brave baby-sitter. First grade brought about fifteen new roblems, namely Pat Ramsey, Ardell y b e r g, Delores Anderson, Lorraine Reck nor, Janice Smith, Bob Blase, Dee Willits, Marlene Coover, Linda Stromberg, Sherm Wilshusen, Dick Mundt, Bob Rahrs, Gary Sagehorn, Bruce Bedient, and Ann Junge. We lost two of our schoolmates making a total of thirty first graders. Our roll decreased from thirty to nine- teen in the second grade. Dewain Shaw was the new member in our class. Our second grade teacher was Mrs. Sterner. Miss Steen tried to discipline twenty energetic third graders. Beth Ann Bolton and Judy O'Shea joined our class and Kathy Thomas moved another state. Our class added three members, Larry Johnson, Barb Glasser, and Carol Stromberg, at the beginning of our fourth grade year. Judy O'Shea moved away and our total became twenty-one. Miss Hanquist was our teacher. In September 1957, Miss Doris Coffey started the year with twenty-two fifth graders. Judy O'Shea returned and Vicki Kneelandand Carole Doremus transferred from another school. We lost Ardell Nyberg and Merlin Green. In sixth grade our membership climbed to twenty-three. Dennis Carlstrom and Bonnie Carlson came to our school and Gene Meerkatz left. Our sixth grade teacher was Mrs. Smith. We added two students to our class when Richard Brockevelt and Bob Rahrs came. Vicki Kneeland left during this year. Mrs. Will was our patient seventh grade teacher. The total was now twenty-four! During our last year in grade school four new students enrolled in the eighth grade. They were Gary Johnson, Vance Stohl, Susan Van Derber and Lyle Johnson. Philip Stearns was our instructor. Twenty-eight of the greenest freshmen ever, became senior high school students in 1961. Our total membership was unchanged. We lost Susan Van Derber, Dewain Shaw, and Steve Flodman. We gained Janice Smith, Dick Mundt, and Sherman Wilshusen. As sophomores our total was again twenty-eight. Linda Stromberg and Lyle Johnson left us and Gary Sagehorn and Steve Flodman transferred from other schools. This completed what is now the gradu- ating class of 1965. CLASS MOTTO One goal reached, many beyond CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS COLORS 32 Pacific Blue and Silver CLASS PROPHECY The year is 1975. There have been many amazing scientific inventions since the days of Polk High in 1965. The latest thing is a television set which enables us to see anyone in the world. Let's tune in on the '65 gradu- ates. The beautiful shores of Hawaii is the first picture to come in on our set. We see breath-taking Hula girls headed by none other than Connie Jones. Connie presents each tourist with a lei and a kiss. The next show on our set is a home- making program. Janice Smith, a house- wife, is washing dishes in a parsonage. Now we are transported to Arabia and who do we find but Rich Brockevelt. He seems to have overcome his high school shyness. He has a harem of 1001 wives and is the envy of nearly every man in the world. Now here is Carol Stromberg; she seems to have grown. Carol is' in the elevated shoe and stilt' business, she is alwyas reaching for higher goals. Meanwhile, Gary Sagehorn a scientist is trying to develop a pill to shorten people. The program has a scientific angle now as we see Dick Mundt is feverishly experi- menting on a new Bev-erage. One of our classmates is a big hero. He is none other than Gary Johnson who has just won the Indianapolis 5()0 with his new Lotus Ford—he got smart and gave up on those old Chevs. Bill Nelson is next to make his television debut. Bill rides through on his favorite Camel. The scene is the White House. Steve Flodman is talking to the president. Guess he has finally broken into politics. The Presi- dent just appointed him Director of the Phys- ical Fitness Program. Why it's Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rahrs. Dee is a very good wife; she uses only Robert's products. Bob is a salesman; he sells skillets. A farm is our next stop. We find Carole Doremus singing Old McDonald Had A Farm . Oh, now we're zooming through the sky in a jet plane. The pilot is Bruce Bedient. He has switched from cars to planes. Bruce gave up on his Olds--couldn't get the wheels off the ground. The scene is tragic, Den Widga went into the banking business with the help of his high school business teacher, .Mr. Leigh. They plan to spend the rest of their lives working their way out of bankruptcy. The next picture is drastically different from the last. We are at the church and who should we see but Judy O'Shea preparing to marry an eighty year old'man. Why? Because he has all the necessary qualifications— money, money, money! Lorraine Recknor has really achieved success. She has a job that suits perfectly her personality. She is head cartoonist for MAD magazine. Another contrast as we look in on Parson Gary Stevens holding one of his famous crusades. Here's Dee Anderson and how she's changed. As you know, she always wanted to run a nursery school, but now we find Dee as a house mother for a fraternity at Nebr. U. Sherm Wilshusen sure looks happy and it's no wonder. He just struck it rich. He inherited the Bon Carlson gold mine. Let us pause for a moment of silence in memory of Pat Ramsey. Pat fulfilled her ambition to be an air-line hostess but her success was short-lived. She accidently hit the exit door and is now at rest in the Pacific Ocean. It's time for a commercial. Linda Kisler is doing the advertising. She is president of a cosmetics firm and the originator of Kiss-- Her lipsticks. Back to the program. Marlene Coover works selling Kreugor shoes while hubby Max plays professional football. Hey look out! it's Barb Glasser zooming past on her Yamaha 80 in her black leather jacket and helmet. Vance Stohl is a college professor at Radcliffe. Vance claims that he owes all his success to his high school English teacher Mrs. Rowlison. We switch to Mexico where Karen Funk is using her great Spanish knowledge to work in the Peace' Corps. She's doing a great job and everyone knows those handsome bull- fighters need looking after. We find Dennis Carlstrom in the neigh- boring community, Hordville, where he is head football coach. He had a 0-9 record this year, that is no wins and nine losses; but he has high hopes for next fall. Good Luck Carl! The last of our star- studded cast is Larry Johnson. He's a prominent commercial artist, he works for Playboy magazines and does interesting work. 33 Librarians Back Row: Janice Smith, Jean Larkin, Kay Nielsen, Gary Stevens.
