To our parents who have so diligently helped and guided us through our twelve years of school, we dedicate this 1960 annual. Their guidance through the years have helped us achieve happiness and a new and broader out- look on life. We will never be able to express our appreciation for the work that they have done to help us. For the help that they have given us, we shall be indebted to them for the rest of our lives. MR. JOE FISHER We, the seniors of '60, will to the school a new clock system and five new buses. We, the seniors of '60, will to the faculty our padlocks, book fines, and peace and quiet until September 1960. We, the seniors of '60, will to the freshmen our old lunch tickets, pencils, and our used test papers; to the sophomores we will our admit slips, book reports, erasers and well used answer books: to the juniors we will our ability to be good in English class and to take care of the type- writers. We also will to the juniors our good driving habits. I, Dianne Doremus, will my laugh to Diane Sandell and my willingness to keep my feet off the wall to Mr. McCormick. I, Fritz Otte, will my ability to get good grades in American government to Larry Klingsporn and my power to stay out of trouble to Rodney Johnson. I, Donald Morris, will my old American Observers to Mr. Karloff and my great height to Regy Green. I, Gayle Stromberg, will my skill to drive slowly and carefully to Kenny Meerkatz and my locker to Roger Morris. I, Roger Merchant, will my football talent to David Fjell and my starting blocks to the high school girls so they can beat the boys to dinner. I, Glenn Dobberstein, will my senior English book to Bruce Cramer and my messy locker to Gaylord Dose. I, Lynda Dornburgh, will my rock’n roll records to Miss Winfield and the broken lab equipment from chemistry class to Pat Funk and Edith Otte. I, Donna Flodman, will my No Doz pills to Mr. Martin so he can be awake. To Thelma Scott I will my citizenship grades. I, Warren Bedient, will to Miss Winfield my three year old Palomino because her old Chevy is getting about beat. To Arlan Stromberg I will my ability to get kicked out of English class. I, Karen Ang, will my brother to Beverly Ekdahl so she will always have a ride to school. To Miss Bryan I will my talent to work chemical equations. I, Joe Fisher, will my joke books to Miss Winfield for use in the Polk-A-Dot. To Janelle Smith I will my football ability. 19 I, Gary Stohl, will my good grades to Alvin Kisler and my hearty laugh to Lonnie Cramer. fPropL ropnecy It was the year of 1970 that I decided to go back to earth from my planetary home. Here I found what I had predicted when I graduated. My first stop was unexpected, for a patrolman stopped me. Here was Gary Stohl one of the meanest cops in the Midwest. Donald Morris I found in New York playing middle line backer for the New York Giants. In the winter he helps the New York Knickerbockers play basketball. Now don't laugh but Gayle Stromberg is the number one comedian in the nation. His partner is Red Skelton. Lynda Dornburgh, after fishing for an occupation, has finally become a secretary for the J. W. Fisher's aquarium. I found Fritz Otte in Kansas City wrestling with the midgets. For a sideline he instructs in ballet dancing. In Hawaii was Karen Ang, the most famous hula dancer of the island. She dances to the music of Presley and Company. Glenn Dobberstein took up the mortician profession and is he ever making a killing!! It's not surprising to me to find Roger Merchant driving a red and white milk truck for Louie Lindburg of Stromsburg. Donna Flodman was on her way to her secretarial job in the State Capitol Building. She is private secretary to the governor. Joe Fisher was in Washington D.C. as the top scientist working on a rocket to hit the planet Pluto. His hobby is keeping an aquarium (and other things). Warren Bedient was in Columbia University as a Professor of English. He says he owes all his success to his high school English teacher. On my return trip I felt slight pangs of hunger. Upon going to the rockets kitchen, whom should I find as cook but Dianne Dor emus. She was mixing one of my favorite dishes. 4mbition$ Roger Merchant: make it to the Olympics Warren Bedient: become a Romeo Karen Ang: secretary for Elvis Presley Donna Flodman: secretary Gary Stohl: receive Doctor's Degree Glenn Dobberstein: a farmer Joe Fisher: head of the Physics Department at Columbia University Dianne Doremus: a reservationist at an airport Don Morris: a businessman Fritz Otte: to make the Navy his career Gayle Stromberg: become a millionaire Lynda Dornburgh: become a nurse We, the Class of 1960. Have been able from the start To make our way completely Into every teacher's heart. Listen, while we tell you Of the special things we've done-- How we helped to make decisions In the way the school was run. First, there is the English class. All quiet, you can see; But suddenly, a lot of noise; Who else but Warren B. In algebra, the brains are clicking As they figure x plus y plus z Ah there; Lynda has the answer. She says it's J. F. plus L. D. In chemistry, it is well known That formulas will vary; They added heat to nitric acid Boom! There went Joe and Gary! The Home Ec. class was learning To do dishes with a bang. Who cooked up this mess of hash? Donna Flodman and Karen Ang. jPoem But wait a tiny minute. Here, as serious as can be. Is a girl who really wants to cook And then get married--Dianne D. The Annual Staff was working-- Plans for pages being made. Where are all the photographs That Roger has mislaid? The study hall is crowded And is it noisy? Very! But here is one who knows his words Fritz reads the dictionary! The shop boys are learning fast At metal they were a whiz. And when it comes to welding Gayle and Glenn are the best there is And then we have a student Who's good in every course Who could this senior be? Why, indeed, it's Donnie Morris. Now the roll has all been read Each student called by name With all these many talents We're in Polk's Hall of Fame. The first form of recognition should be made toward basketball, for the Polk basketball team won the Goldenrod conference, the conference tournament, and the district tournament. They finished in ninth place standing in the Omaha World Herald for class D schools. The second team suffered but one defeat during season play and won a first place trophy in the Polk County tournament. Regy Green and Gaylord Dose were chosen on the All-Tourney conference team, while Darwin Hahn received a birth on the second team. Gaylord Dose received honorable mention for All-State honors in Class D. The Junior High Basketball team had a 3-1 record for the season, and won second place honors in the Grade team tourney held at Clarks. On November 5th, the Regents examinations were given to selected senior class members. Joe Fisher won a Regents scholarship as a result of taking this test. The Regents scholarship is for the purpose of at- tending the University of Nebraska. March 25th was a day set aside to send a number of students to participate in the Inter-scholastic con- tests held at Kearney. Joan Larkin received the highest honor by receiving a third place medal in the Standard Foods Test. At one time during the year a test was given in Home Economics for the purpose of determining the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. This was given on a national basis. Lynda Dornburgh won the ’’Betty Crocker Homemaker Award” within our school. When the campaign was on for the March of Dimes, a dance was given at Osceola in which a March of Dimes queen was selected. Each of the schools in the county sent a Queen to the March of Dimes dance. Sally Norquest was chosen March of Dimes Queen from our school and represented Polk at the march of Dimes dance. Mickey Fjell was chosen from the Junior class to attend Boys’ State by the American Legion. Janet Graves was the Junior girl chosen for Girls’ State by the Ladies’ Auxiliary. Polk participated in the District Music contest held at Albion and accumulated a total of four superior ratings. Those receiving superior ratings were: Joyce Stewart, Clarinet; Sally Norquest, vocal solo; Girls’ Trio (Sally, Jackie, Linda); and the Girls' Sextet (Sally Norquest, Jackie Cramer, Linda Johnson, Karen Stevens, Judy Adelson, and Bonnie Hanquist). For the first time, an All-Sports Banquet was held in the new auditorium. Karen Ang was chosen Queen, and Donna Flodman was the Queen’s Attendant. Roger Merchant was chosen King and Glenn Dobberstein was the King's Attendant. Outstanding player award medals were presented to Roger Merchant for football and track. Gaylord Dose received the player award medal in basketball. Regy Green was presented with a Free-throw award medal. Class night and honors convocation was held on the night of May 17th. Joe Fisher was Valedictorian of the senior class, while Lynda Dornburgh and Gary Stohl were Salutatorians. Galen Sterner was Eighth grade Valedictorian and Jay Dee Green was Salutatorian. Perfect attendance awards were presented to Connie Hoffman, Karen Stevens, Ronald Johnson, Sharon Willits, Leon Stromberg, Bonnie Hanquist, Joan Larkin, Joyce Stewart, Jeri Cramer, Gaylord Dose, Mickey Fjell, Judy Adelson, Doug Stevens, Gary Stohl, and Donald Morris. Joyce Stewart was presented with a special music award medal, for outstanding con- tributions in the field of music for 1959-60. Awards entitled, I Dare You” were presented to Karen Ang and Joe Fisher of the Senior class. These awards were given by the Danforth Foundation in recognition of outstanding leadership qualities. Citizenship awards were presented to Joan Sandell of the eighth grade, and Donald Morris of the Senior class. An activities award medal was presented to Sally Norquest of the Junior class. Sally also received a typing award given by the Underwood Typewriter Company. An award of Merit was presented to Donald Morris as the outstanding Business Education Student. A medal award en- titled, Best-All-Round-Senior Girl” was presented to Karen Ang of the Senior Class. Roger Merchant was presented with the same type medal entitled, ’’Best-All-Round-Senior Boy.” Lynda Dornburgh was pre- sented with the 1960 Home Extension Scholarship for use in the field of nursing or home economics. This scholarship was awarded by the Polk County Extension Council. Joe Fisher received a scholarship issued by the Board of Education of State Normal Schools valid in any one of the four Nebraska State Teachers Colleges. Roger Merchant received an athletic scholarship for four years to attend Midland College. The County grade school track meet was held at Polk this year and Polk finished second to Stromsburg. First place winners for Polk were: Max Kroger in the shot-put; Eddie Johnson in the low hurdles; and Merton Flodman in the 880. Polk's high school track team won the County, Conference, District, and won first place in Class D at the State meet. They finished second place in meets held at Columbus, Midland and Kearney. Roger Merchant was triple-first place winner in three events (Broad jump, 100, 220) at each track meet in which he par- ticipated, including the State. The 880 relay team was also undefeated and set a new record in Class D at the State with a 1:35.1 clocking. This erased a fourteen year old mark. Gaylord Dose, Regy Green, Gary Stohl, and Roger Merchant were members of this relay team. Gaylord Dose qualified in the 440 for state meet competition but did not place. Roger Merchant with 18 individual points, plus the winning 880 relay com- bination, gave Polk a total of 24 points, enough for the State Track crown in Class D. 50 FIRST ROW: Left To Right, Regy Green, Gaylord Dose, Kenny Meerkatz, Charles Cramer, Donald Morris, Larry Gary Stohl, Joe Fisher, Alvin Kisler, Glenn Dobberstein, Klingspom, Ronald Johnson.
