We, of the '59 yearbook staff, have worked steadily for many months to produce this volume of the Polk Cub. Within these pages we have tried to record the many memorable events that have happened to us during our journey through high school. We hope that, not only at the present but in the years to come, this book will be a treasured keepsake and that it will recall many happy occasions. v y.m v vv _ v, r Dedication For his understand- ing of our limitations and failings, for his willing- ness to help us prepare to m eet the future, for his patient tolerance of our foolish acts and his sup- port of our worthier en- deavors, and for his willing loanof priceless experience, we, the Senior Class of 1S591 proudly dedicate this, our yearbook to Mr. Jerry Martin. Superintendent s Message TO THE CLASS OF 1959: It is with pleasure and honor that I salute you and express my good wishes for your future success and happiness. We hope that the time you have spent in school here will be the beginning of an ad- vancing era toward higher education and will serve as a record of these years of accomplish- ments and achievements at Polk High School. No other generation of youth in history has been confronted with social, economic, and political problems more far-reaching than that of today. It is my hope that your experience in Polk High School will help you meet these problems and enable you to think and act for yourself and enjoy the benefits of your creation so that you may face the world boldly and accept these obligations to the service of humanity and the glory of God. Sincerely your friend, L. D. Kneeland Superintendent Principal s Message Congratulations upon the completion of a successful and full year of school experience! To those who are leaving Polk Public School at this time, our sincere best wishes for your continued success. To those students who have not yet completed their high school experiences , may we offer a word of en- couragement. The world demands a high degree of competency from the youth of today. Consider your present assignment seriously and make certain that you obtain the most from your present opportunities. Freshman Initiation After receiving detailed instructions given by our most honorable upperclassmen, the mighty seniors, the green freshmen were cheerfully initiated into Polk High. This day, the 30th of September, the year 1958, will bring back amusing memories to us in future years. The boys, keeping up in the latest styles, wore the sack look. Some very fashionable hats were also worn, which looked very smart with the dresses. They looked very attractive with a ladies' pump on one foot and the other foot unshod. The girls however, did not keep up to style, as they wore men's overalls and coveralls. These looked very odd on the girls because they also had to wear them backwards. Their hair styles were most amusing, as they were required to wear their hair in thirteen braids, with bal- loons at the end of each braid. The thoughtful seniors knowing of our enormous appetites supplied us with the delicacy of raw onions. On approaching a senior anytime during the whole day, the freshmen cheerfully bowed and sang their praises to these honored upperclassmen. The climax of the day's activity was the party which the seniors gave for the freshmen. The student body and faculty were also present at the evening entertainment. The seniors had a hilarious program planned in which the freshmen took part. The faculty also gave us a brief dis- play of their talents. Following, a lunch, given by the seniors, was enjoyed by everyone present.
