Histless at first until I recognized the faces of old P.H.S. Then I sat erect for now I could truthfully (?) prophecy. The city of Polk had grown, and now its wJLde boulevard with flags was bedecked. Then came a great procession and I heard the herald proclaim that it was Homecoming Day for those who were famed and had graduated from Polk High with the class of '49 Mr. Willert standing on the band stand of Polk, Nebraska is giv- ing brief summary of what the Seniors of 49 are doing today. Prof. Leland Anderson is seated at his desk going over his His- tory assignment for tomorrow as he rocks one of his children on his knee. ME W.? A V -• WU' 7 X Ii r r CLASS POEM How glorious the class of 1950; Pour years ago with minds quite thrifty, Embacked upon the Journey long With ne'er a thought of going wrong. As Freshies green we were a sight. Worked all day and wept at night; Our upper classmen we did fear And stayed our distance that whole year. As sophisticated Sophomores we thought we knew. Everything that we should do; We finally found to our dismay That teachers wouldn't stand for play. As Jolly Juniors, you could say. That we worked hard on our lass Play; But on our banquet we worked harder still A night of enjoyment for Seniors fulfill. Now, as Seniors, we can see That dumb forever we will be; 1 But, we'll try to make the best of life And overcome this world of strife. Sitting down and becoming serious. Forgetting times that were delirious; We will mention, because we should; Polk High School days sure were good! CLASS CCLCRS KELLY GREEN AND WHITE CLASS FLOWER WHITE CARNATIDN CLASS MCTTC TODAY WE FOLLQW TDMDRRDW WE LEAD CLASS POEM We, The Seniors We had our time as day by day. We came to Polk to work and play. We re leaving now with tears in our eyes. For it’s time to give our last goodbyes. Goodbye dear friends that we have known. To us true friendship you have shown. Goodbye to the campus and the school. It was here we learned the golden rule. Goodbye to the times that we had. Whether they were good or bad. For it was through our work and play. We've been prepared for future days. We're going into the wide-wide world. With Polk High learning like a flag unfurl'd; Let's bear that banner really high. That the American way may never die. We're headed for wars, world of trouble. We'll falter not, but work redoubled Polk High has helped each one or us. So let's succeed, ”ln God We Trust.” CLASS PLAY 11 The Campbells Are Coming” ”The Campbells Are Coming” is a hilarious farce with hillbilly trimmings, describing the most effective technique for getting rid of an undesirable suitor. Kaye Brannigan returns from a girls' school chock-full of culture. Much to her family's disgust, she breaks with sturdy, dependable Jeff Scudder and announces her engagement to a young snob, Kingston Campbell. Learning that Kingston's aristocratic mother believes that the Brannigans are hillbillies and that Kingston and his mother are coming for a visit to find out the truth, the re- sourceful Brannigans disguise themselves as hillbillies and receive the guests during the absence of Kaye, who has hastened to a nearby city to purchase everything from caviar to tuxedos in order to impress the Campbells. The Brannigans appear barefoot, dressed in rags and carrying shotguns, frightening the Campbells half out of their wits by mistaking them for ”revenooers.” One riotously funny situation follows another in rapid succession. An old hen lays an egg in Mrs. Campbell's ritzy hat, Jeff starts a feud witn Kingston and chases him with a rifle. Mrs. Campbell faints and is accidentally revived from a jug of moon- shine, under the influence of which she makes some startling revela- tions regarding her past life and identity. At last Kingston indig- nantly refuses to marry Kaye, and the Brannigans rejoice that their scheme has worked. Then, Just as the Campbells are about to depart, in walks Kaye, wrathfully demanding explanations. Ahe Brannigans finally explain and Jeff turns cave man in order to win Kaye. There is one consolation for such a poor record and that is compe- tition was excellent throughout the entire area. This is proven by the fact that Genoa, Hampton, and Silver Creek were district tournament winners Clarks a runner-up. Benedict, Shelby, St. Edwards and Bradshav. were semi- finalists in their respective meets. The season was highlighted by a double victory over Stromsburg 25-2k and 3U--29 The season s biggest discouragement was the loss to Bradshaw 36-2!f in the Hampton tournament. In all, 13 boys competed on the varsity squad with a grand total of twenty-one boys out for the sport. Of these twenty-one, only four will not return. These are Ernie Gleim, Elmer Ratzlaff, Gordon Johnson, and Duane Sterner. Ernie Gleim missed the last six games of the season due to an op- eration for appendicitis. A total of twelve boys earned enough time to warrant a P numeral. Ten of these boys will return next year. Roger Long received honorable mention for the All-Conference basketball team.
