This theatre is for seri- ous dance students who enjoy performing. We practice two Saturdays out of the month. We've performed at several different nursing homes, at Westgate Mall, Hillcrest Mall, Converse College, Wofford College, Ramada 1nn, Spartanburg Spring Fling at the Uptown Mall, McDonald's, and the Charles Lea Center. Watching the ex- pressions of enjoyment on these handicapped children's faces makes performing very worth- while. My sister Tammy and 1 take private lessons on Saturdays to learn new tap routines to do togeth- er. Tammy and 1 have a dance room at home with mirrors, and barres where we spend alot of time dancing, and working out together. We attend dance conventions during the summer at Myrtle Beach. These conventions consist of dancing all day except for our lunch break. They usually last four days. Our dance school has a big recital at the Spartan- burg Memorial Auditorium every May. Tammy and 1 are invited to dance at all the town recitals which consist of Lyman, Cowpens, Boiling Springs, Union and Gaffney. ln 1981 Tammy and 1 were in the 4-1-1 Funfest Talent Show at Tryon Fine Arts Center. We won first place in our age group and were selected for the Best of Show. We were awarded a trophy and ribbon. 1n 1982 we were in the 4-1-1 Funfest again. We were so happy and excited that we again won first place in our age group and Best of Show . We received another trophy and rib- bon, and were invited to represent Polk County at the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. We were invited to perform at the Barn Door in Lan- drum. ln 1983 Tammy and 1 competed in National Showstoppers which was held at Spartanburg and we won. This made us eligible to compete in the finals held in Washington, D.C. in luly 1984. This was the toughest competition we had ever been up against. We competed against dancers all over the world. We were thrilled to death to be awarded second place for our tap routine, Down Under the Sheltering Pines. We received a beautiful ribbon, medallion, and trophy. ln 1984 Tammy and 1 competed in Encore National Com- f petition held in Asheville, We won first place, and 55' received a trophy and ribbon. This made us eligi- ble to compete in the finals held in Disney World , at Orlando, Florida. We didn't get to go though! because our family had just gone there the prefgygk vious summer for vacation. ln my seventh grad s year, Tammy and 1 entered Polk Central's talen. show and won S25 for first place. f When 1 started dancing with Tammy, 1 came to her waist, and now 1 think 1 finally caught up with her. She has been real good working with me all these years, 1 think it's made me a much better ' dancer by working extra hard to keep up with her. 1 hope one day our biggest dream comes true-that we will own our very own dance stu- dio, and get to work and teach together. Nothing could ever take the place of the happiness, and memories that Tammy and 1 will always share. Dancing since age three 96-Eighth Grade ing 1 Freshmen i . g . K win. This year, we were asked to send a group of 50 to perform our Christmas concert at the Bilt- more House in Asheville and I was pleased to be chosen among the 50 out of lO7 members. Also, for the past three years, I have attended a music confer- ence in Flat Rock, N.C. where the final concert is professionally taped. I have been taking piano at Converse College for about two and one-half years. We give two concerts each semester. I have competed for two scholarships and auditioned for an Honors Recital, in which I performed. I really enjoy studying music, I hope to enter the field of music. The past four years at Polk Central have been motivating, interesting, and exciting for me. ln 7th and 8th grades l was a member of the band, the l r. Beta Club, and Student Coun- cil. ln my first two years of high school, l was elected to the home- coming court, played basketball, joined the Young Christians Club, and served on the Student Council. Although the awards in school- Cutstanding 7th grade band stu- dent, first place in the Upstairs writ- ing contests, Student of the Month, and serving as Vice-President of the Student Council-are all exciting, the best awards l receive come from singing. l have been singing since l was almost eight years old. At this time, l began singing with my uncle as a duet. From this arose a little family group called the Soul Conspirators. A few years after this group dis- solved, l joined the Green Creek Community Mass Choir, l am cur- rently singing with the Soul Su- premes. During the eight years l've been singing, l've won talent shows and sang in numerous churches across the land. l really enjoy receiving prizes for singing, but the best re- ward ever comes from watching the people's facial expressions change from sad to happy as l sing or when a person comes up to me and says, l really enjoyed hearing you sing. You've made me feel very good. I can't explain the way l feel when l receive a standing ovation, but to know that someone else appreciates and enjoys the gift that God has blessed me with makes me very hap- PY- Wanda Carson ! 5:21531 15 - lTS have to eat lunch too!
