It was written by Benjamin Franklin in 1732 and published when he was only twenty-six years old. Mr. Franklin died in 1790. He wrote his own epitaph as follows: ‘’Here lies the body of Ben Franklin, food for the worms; But my work shall not be lost.” And indeed his work was not lost. It was carried on and by chance appeared in the Polk Central Yearbook almost 200 years later. Perform Without Failur e Bp _ Whatever You Resolve. Use No Hurtful Deceit. The Eighth Graders started a new career in an unfamiliar school, found new friends, and established a different kind of school life. Football, Cheerleading, Basketball, Shop, Home Economics and Band were only a few things they were able to participate in. No more worries about Eighth Grade Gradua- tion; only worries about High School. A first-class fortune teller, very likely couldn’t Answer that question for you — how are jobs created? — as you go out into the world to seek your fortune. It’s a subject fit for an entire course in economics. But whether you'll be looking for a new job after school this year. ..or later, after additional education and training... we'd submit to you that basically, new jobs come from profits! The economist Peter Drucker, writing in Readers Digest has put it plainly: “If we hope to succeed in creating new jobs for young people during the years just ahead, the country will have to find a great deal of new capital somewhere. This is particularly true of the jobs we will need the most — jobs for highly educated people .... The greater the skill or knowledge demanded by a job, the greater the capital investment needed to make it possible.” Make sense? Everyone knows that a computer operator can't work without a computer. And sophisticated computers can cost from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars! By the same token, a doctor can’t function effectively without a substantial investment in a nearby hospital... not to mention the costly equipment in his own office and in the labs on which he depends. As Peter Drucker sums it up: we cannot hope to get new capital — the money that jobs are made from — by drawing on fat in the economy, or by “reducing excess profits ” as some suggest. “New capital’ — to create and sustain jobs — “can come from only two sources: savings and profit.” “in the case of General Electric, profits average just about five cents on each sales dollar GENERAL @@ ELECTRIC Remember ... As the students faced a dif- ferent environment they met the challenge with great drive and determination. The construction of a vocational building offered opportunity and added accommodations for a better means of education. The pleasurable facili- ties and added space were enjoyed by the stu- dents. The Yearbook Staff Los i) Annual Staff The 1973-1974 Yearbook Staff was one of great ingenious and indivi- duality. Inexperienced members learned darkroom processing, 3-R forms, and business management. The main goal set by the staff was to make this year a memorable one. Annual photographers from left to right are: Dennis Horton, Tom Owens, Elliott Johnson, Jeff Price, and Perry Hall. -_ Wanda McCall, Assistant Editor 172 Mrs. Beatson — Yearbook Advisor — takes a final look at pages before mailing them to the publishers.
