I a antme vans Row R Cermg VN Srarc' VX Allen Osberg Under the able d1T9Cl1OIl of Mr Fusco the band has made a f1ne showrng th s year When they came back from therr summer vacat1on most of the band members had to blow three months accumu1at1on of dust off of the1r horns By buclchng r1ght down to work they managed to prepare enough mus1c to play for the football pep assemblles and games The elements halted the only tr1p that the band had planned dur1ng the en t1re year Toward the end of the football season the group had planned to travel to Columb1ana to play for our football game there but ram postponed the tr1p at the last rnmute Almost a whole years work went 1nto the band s flnal performance the Pop Concert It was the longest and most successful concert presented by thls group all year The band owes much of 1ts success to the f1ne teachmg of Mr Fusco who not only made playrng 1n the band an emoyable experzence for 1ts members but also taught them many of the fundamentals of muslc Everyone under hlS drrectron profrted from the year s work Although there are only a few sen1ors 1n the band they w1ll be sorely m1ssed by the younger mus1c1ans who have prof1ted by these SGDIOFS efforts rn past years These younger members of the band would llke to wlsh all of the SGDIOIS the very best of luck' The Band Page E1ahteer1 f - 1 - 1 1 - 1 . . , . In-the Library .af 'NS-Q., During the school year many of our pupils take tests given by the State Department of education These tests show how all the schools and pupils corn pare in a state wide competition Contests of this kind are important to pupils not only because of the recog n1t1on they receive if they rank near the top but because their study for the tests constitutes a comprehenslve review of the work of the entire school year Pupils also acquire the knack of taking tests which will be invaluable to them Formerly students IU Mahoning County took the District State Scholarship Test at Canfield but now because of war time transportation restrictions each pupil takes the test at his own school The State Senior Scholarship Test is still grven at South High School however ln this senior test given in March Frederick Fowler and lay Hoyt tied for first place in Mahoning County and sixteenth place in Ohio Richard Hadnett Carolyn Walker and George Dale were also among the top twenty five in the county The Eighth Grade State Test and the District State Scholarship Test were given in April and the results have not yet been received We are confident however that when the results of these tests have been reported Poland Seminary High will once again have upheld her reputation for high scholastic achievement Academic Activities We feel quite proud of our students because of the fine record they have made for the school during the different War Loan Drives For our bond and stamp sales this year we have had a very capable leader Perhaps many of you have seen her racing in and out of the office at almost any time or giving one of her well known pep talks over the Public Address System Let s give three cheers for Carolyn Walker and for her sales men We had an interesting contest this year In our school hall there was a large figure of a lapanese soldier Every time a certain grade bought some bonds and stamps we made him see stars and wear stripes We have also had some close competition between homerooms to see which room could get lOO A each week This year each salesman took her turn in making an announcemen every Monday to remind the students about the sales on Tuesday We have had some entertaining moments on Monday mornlngs For Carolyn and all of her salesmen l want to express a thank you to you who have helped to make this year a successful one lm sure that all of the boys from our school and elsewhere who are in the service say a fond thanks for the fine work we are doing to help them on the home front Bond and Stamp Sales if Page Thirty eight l ' W ' V tflf t I . . , u jr er.
