MRS. THAYER PRESENTS THE PRDERE55 During the past twenty-five years progress has been rapidly changing the pace of the country -- from radio to colored T.V., from the twenty-mile per-hour speed limit to the jet age. Progress has also been changing the pace here at PCS, where our student body has increased from 405 to nearly 800, and our teaching staff from 52 to 48. Before we centralized in 1956 there were twenty-one today there is one left, in North Gage, and that will be Where originally we had four maintain two station wagons, Our cafeteria was built later, it serves between 400 which will open in September busses, today we use eight, a pick-up truck and a spare to serve 150 students. Now, and 500 lunches daily. The , will be nearly three times district schoolsg closed this June. and in addition emergency bus. twenty-fiveyears new cafeteria, larger. Our Health Department has also expanded through the years under the supervision of Dr. Herbert N. Wallace and Mrs. Lydia Rommel Brady, school nurse. Today the department includes a dental hygienist and looks forward to the services of a part-time nurse in addition. In a recent newspaper article we read: nThe Poland Central School has been commended by Department for its excellent one of the best in the State Coach Howard Chaffee, now in teaching at PCS, has this co creased number of pupils has gram of sports activities. With more we can offer more activities, pation is tremendous. The new gym is the State Health health program... Among other departments, muslc has grown steadily more important with us. In 1950 a well equipped bandroom was provided. Today we number four music instructors on our staff: two band direct- ors, a piano teacher and a vocal instructor. The commercial department has added many features to its program, at present under the supervision of Mrs. Ellen Griffin and Mr. John Fake. Among the courses added in the past three years are shorthand, office practice and secretarial practice. New machines such as the Stenorette and adding machines have been purchased, together with a new mimeograph machine for the Press Room, where the school newspaper, FLASH, is prepared. As for our school library, Mrs. Frances warren, our li- brarian, says that the shelves house 6ooo volumes where once there were 2000. The addition of several new services has also marked the growth of PCS These include guidance, which opened in 1955 with our first director, Mr. Walter Schickg elementary science coordination, and driver training education The school itself was enlarged in 1957 by four new grade rooms in the garage, an additional wing, and conversion of storage rooms and faculty rooms into classrooms. This year, twenty new classrooms are being added. So, PCS has grown, along with the rest of the world. While space ships are being invented, the minds of boys and girls are being trained to meet the challenge. 0 dffLJ ZCQLUELQLAJ CHU
