One of the broader sec- tions of the dept. is that of literature which deals with many interesting views, both old and new, such as Literature of the Supernatural and of the Occult, 20th Century American, Short Story, and others. The literature courses seem to be the most popular among students and offer great insight to the lives and customs of other cultures. The English area is that of writing. Courses are offered in Basic Writing, College Composition, and Creative Writing. One' favorite is Creative Writing. ln this course, the student learns various writing techniques and puts them to use in original compo- sitions and essays. With so much writing involved, this tends to be a rather diffi- cult course, gbut in the Iongrrun, it's well worth the trouble. Having a good, solid background in writing helps greatly in many other special courses such as Busi- ness English, aimed toward those wishing to pursue a career in business, particu- larly as secretaries, are excellent because they provide neccessary background for students without concentrating on sub- jects irrelevant to their future work. Elective courses are open to juniors and seniors only, because students need a general foundation upon which to build before going on to more specialized subjects. The elective system is consid- erate of the students and indicates that teachers understand their wide variety of interests and needs, and try their best to satisfy them.
