One of the broader sec- tions of the dept. is that of literature which deals with many interesting views, both old and new, such as Literature of the Supernatural and of the Occult, 20th Century American, Short Story, and others. The literature courses seem to be the most popular among students and offer great insight to the lives and customs of other cultures. The English area is that of writing. Courses are offered in Basic Writing, College Composition, and Creative Writing. One' favorite is Creative Writing. ln this course, the student learns various writing techniques and puts them to use in original compo- sitions and essays. With so much writing involved, this tends to be a rather diffi- cult course, gbut in the Iongrrun, it's well worth the trouble. Having a good, solid background in writing helps greatly in many other special courses such as Busi- ness English, aimed toward those wishing to pursue a career in business, particu- larly as secretaries, are excellent because they provide neccessary background for students without concentrating on sub- jects irrelevant to their future work. Elective courses are open to juniors and seniors only, because students need a general foundation upon which to build before going on to more specialized subjects. The elective system is consid- erate of the students and indicates that teachers understand their wide variety of interests and needs, and try their best to satisfy them. One area that has im- proved greatly was the Band, under the direction of Mr. Richard Ellicks. Mr. Ellicks deals with instrumental music, music theory, ad lessons. There's'a Marching Band, Concert Band and Stage Band. During marching season, most of the band time is spent memorizing formations on the field and playing the music cor- rectly. Lessons are held a helfan hour once a week, all year long during school time. Practice is held on Monday nights for an hour and a half during marching season. This year the Band took a trip to Disneyworld in Florida. All the members worked hard towards this goal, holding and getting donations to help support thetrip. Pit Band helps the dramatics department with plays. The Stage Band is for students with the better ability in music. Being in Stage Band includesfa trip to Boston forfa weekend. The concert season is met with challenging music that is prepared for spring concerts. The new Dramatic Arts wing of the school is one of the ,best in countriy, with its,g,new professionalylighting system. There are' li.itm any new and exciting things developing duefto the facilities, students, and dedicated staff in this department. Students are able to compare their culture with that of others around the world, A language course can range from the an- cient Latin, which all other lan- guages are derived, to French, German, and Spanish. To acquire knowledge of another language of people and accept it, is truly a sign of being educated. Cer- tain days of the year are desig- nated for student participation in European ways of living. These days are known as culture days. Each person prepares a particular food from that country and ev- eryone feasts on the goodies. The main topics of conversation are European dress, food, and fashion of living, sometimes, while music from that country is being played. Each year,stu- dents and teachers embark to Europe during Easter vacation. After talking and hearing so much about other countries, a student finally can see for himself. Each day is filled with sightseeing, shopping, and dining in restau- rants. Some just view learning a foreign dialect as a required course for college, but it is really a very important part of educa- tion. Knowing different forms of languages in existence is es- sential to survival. The knowl- edge of a foreign language may one day prove to be very helpful. Home Ec. 1-4, Chef Class, Home Economics for seniors, and Sewing Workshop are the courses offered in the Home Economic Department. In H.E. 1-4, the courses are divided into two semesters, food and cloth- ing. Since styles change and opinions vary, y what is taught changes from year to year. However, what is taught is fun and enjoyable. Chef Class is offered to students interested in study- ing food preparation. H.E. for seniors isioffered to senior stu- dents interested in a survey course and who have had little or no prior H.E. courses. Some areas covered in this course are food, nutrition, clothing, home furnishings, child care, and fam- ily economics. Each year, five freshmen and five sophomores are voted into the club for the following school year. Members are chosen on their leadership and scholastic abilities. The Keyettes engage in community and school orientated activities. One activity sponsored by the Keyettes is the Annual Powderpuff Football game between the Beach and Boro junior and senior girls. The Keyette Club has also been involved in the recycling project run by the town. Every year, the Keyettes help at the Easter Egg Hunt and the Children's Christmas Party. Keyettes sometimes engage in inter-club activities like volleyball games between local school's Keyette and Key Clubs. Overall, the Keyettes are always willing to help in the community whenever needed. Sherrie Hyde, Cara Chapel, Eileen Kellington Maureen Miller, Karen Hennessy. This year, like every year, the Key Club has worked every Saturday morning with recyc- ling. We recently held a Walk-a-thon in which we raised money for the hungry people in the world. The club has sold pretzels at school functions and has worked around the school. New members are elected on their grades, the teachers vote, and then whether they will work for the club. Every year the Key Club goes to the Poconos for a convention. Last year the club won first place in its catagory of 28 members or less of all New jersey. KEY CLUB lar!!! fl Q l X . MIXED CHORUS The Mixed Chorus is made up of students in grades 10-12, male and female. We rehearse one class period every day, for a total of five credits for the year. The course is open to anyone who enjoys singing. Usually, the size of the group varies between 60-80 members. We present two public concerts each year, our Winter and our Spring Con- certs. We have been invited to sing at many clubs and organizations including the Old Guard, the original Leisure Village, the V.F.W., and the Townhouse, to name a few. We participated in the community presen- tation of Handel's Messiah, and took part in Lenten services held at St. Peter's Church, involving area churches. Several students, usually , are chosen from the Mixed Chorus to participate in a special group called the Madrigals. From this group stem off the boys to form the Boy's Ensem- ble, the girls make up the Treblettes. These students are chosen because of their superior voice qualities. Their talents do not lie only in their voices, for at many of our concerts they performed dance routines while singing. All students in the choruses are dedicated to our wonderful director, Mr. Donley. K 5 I SENIOR TRIP On February 9th, 100 members of the senior class of P.P.B. armed with skis, bags, and suitcases prepared to leave for their ski trip to Tamiment in the Poconos. Most everyone arrived at the appointed time, 6:30-6:45AM, and the baggage check went smoothly and as scheduled. The busses were due to arrive at 7:00 and departure would be at 7:30 AM. There seemed to be a slight delay and when the early homeroom bell sounded, we took our luggage and moved to the auditorium. Less than a half hour later we had to move to the Memorial School cafeteria. Finally, at 9:00, two hours later from the scheduled time, the buses arrived. We boarded and got to Tamiment at 11:30 AM. We checked into the motel and dressed to go out on the slopes. Some other activities enjoyed by the class were snow mobiling, ski bikes, ice-hockey, the swimming pool, and the game rooms. Everyone found some activity to their liking. After dinner the students could listen to a band, or just sit around and relax in the lobbies. As a special treat, the motel kept the pool open until 1:30 AM so the class could enjoy a midnight swim. Tuesday morning following breakfast, students went back out to ski or play hockey until 4:00, when it was time to load the buses and head for home. We arrived home about 6:30-7:00 PM. It was a most enjoyable trip and everyone had a great time. 104 Q' ...', i 105 MORE SENIOR TRIP if ' f 107 VARSITY WRESTLING Row 1 jeff Hager, Bob Popiel, Scott Salisbury, Bob Wright, Howie MacDonald. CARLYLE SENIORS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The seed broke open and as the roots spread in the darkness, we entered high school. In the eigth grade, we had been at the top, and suddenly, a few months later, we were just freshmen-the youngest again. We were starting a new life. Some of the luckier members had spent their eigth grade in the high school, but for the rest of us, we had to learn the hard way. We were immediately caught up in the confusion, the sea of strange faces, and the many books that made us wonder if we'd ever make it. But soon the new, exciting, and even a little scary, became routine. The soil was pushed away, and the green stem of the plant appeared. The light shone on us as we began as Soph- omores. We had a year behind us, and a long way to go. It was our second step in establishing the type of per- son and student we hoped to be. just as we began to feel tired of being underclassmen, the ring man ap- peared, and things began to look brighter. It was a new excitment, and we proudly flashed our rings to every- one, as the Sophomore classes before us must have done. The leaves began to appear on the stem, and the plant reached for the sun, displaying its new growth. We were juniors, and the future began to take shape. It was the first year we had a chance to choose our own subjects for the English and History departments. We knew we were upperclassmen when we could participate in Pow- der Puff Football for the first time. The Rock-a-thon went over successfully, and soon we were buzzing about 122 the Prom. In between the PSAT's and other tests that would help determine our future, we decided on the theme for our Prom. The gym was decorated with enthusiasm and soon the evening in which we were Search- ing So Long was upon us. We shed our everyday jeans, and in formal attire, we entered the magical world. The plant formed a bud, and in the warmth of the sun, the flower began to open. We suddenly realized we were Seniors, and the past three years had gone by faster than it seemed. This was the year of Senior privileges. Finally we didn't have to sit through boring study halls any more. Our bonfire went over big, and for those who spent the night sleeping out, it also went over cold. One of the highlights was our Senior Variety Show which kept us entertained, if not in hysterics. Our senior trip to Tamiment, Pa. will always be remembered. And last, but not least, our Senior Ball was a special night with memories we will never forget. The rose is in full bloom now, and its splendor and beauty is most noticable. four years are behind us, but they will never be forgotten for in our minds and hearts we will think of the good times we've shared, the friend- ships we've formed, and the knowledge we've learned. The door is opening and from graduation we will pass into a new life. As our nation celebrates 200 years of freedom and independence, we the class of 1976 look ahead to the challenge of tomorrow. And strengthened by our heritage we will accept with courage the new world to come. The years were enlightening, and perhaps before we pass through the doors, we may pause a few moments to reflect, and then continue on. 123 CLASS BRAINS DONE MOST FOR THE CLASS Bill Coffin Nancy Hall Eileen Campbell john Scharff MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED BEST DRESSED Ali-N i 31 603-i ? Club has enjoyed a very fruitful year in 76. This year Lennart Westman, a stu- dent from Sweden, attended P.P.B. as a senior and graduated with our students in june. Activities that the student club members have participated in this year were three rollar skating parties at the Lakewood Rollar Skat- ing Arena along with the Point Pleasant Beach A.F.S. Club members, a Square Dance held in the cafeteria with Bob Bissey the caller. The highlight of every year is A.F.S. Day which is an annual event. This took place on ,Feb. 27th at both the Beach and Borough schools. Approximately 14 foreign A.F.S. students who are attending high schools in Monmouth and Ocean County are slated to spend the day at either Point Pleasant Borough or Beach High School. They will attend classes during the school day and tell the students about their homelands and school. Our student chapter had been active this year in trying to raise money for students coming to our country or planning to go overseas. They have sold pretzels at home soccer games, sold A.F.S. Christmas cards and sold refresh- ments at Adult Chapter Flea Markets. This was only the end result for it took many weeks of planning and decorating to transform the gym into a nautical world. There was much dancing and happy re- memberances of the night, but the high- light of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen, and the selecting of the court. The queen was Lisa Canonica and her court were Laura Davis, Beth Lind, Betty Mead, and Diana Zoppi. john Scharff was the king, and his court consisted of Bob Holly, Tom Gesemaria, Brian McCarthy, and Tim Cahill. Sturdy, determined pioneers hacked away at the edges of a raw continent and, with blunders and achievements alike, modeled a country with a spirited nature and an united commitment to individual liberty for every one of its citizens. Americans, great and not so great, have given us a heritage to carry on and improve upon. Farmers and soldiers, industri- alists and merchants, dreamers and leaders, are all there in two centuries of progress. But the maturing isn't finished. You'll find the boundaries of growth as endless today as when our forefathers first envisioned them. You can seek out your own destiny with the wisdom and judgement which comes with re-creation of the past. Your knowledge, dreams and industry will carry on through many more centuries of living history. its S I N. .
