' ' I rm., 1' ,................ I ,,,, M MR. ANTRIM Superinfendenf earsage fo Me .giucfenfs 0 poinf pdadanf EMA 3400! Probably never before in The hisTory of American ed- ucaTion has There been so much aTTenTion given To The need Tor developing The inTeIlecTuaI TaIenTs of our younger gen- eraTion. This year has wiTnessed The esTablishmenT of a naTion-wide organized drive To increase greaTly The college scholarship opporTuniTies Tor youTh. Business and indusTry are recognizing The imporTance of invesTing money in higher educaTion Tor purposes of developing our greaTesT naTural resource-The brain power oT our young people. This musT be done To an even greaTer degree if we are To meeT The educaTionaI compeTiTion of Those who would desTroy de- mocracy. More and more graduaTes of Poinl' PIeasan+ Beach High School have been The recipienTs of scholarships in re- cenT years. IndicaTions are, aT This wriTing, Thai' This year's seniors are likewise making successful bids Tor such scholar- ship recogniTion. IT IS SMART TO WORK FOR GOOD GRADES AND TO HAVE A GOOD SCHOOL RECORD! WheTher as a recommendaTion Tor empIoymenT or Tor scholarship con- sideraTion, a record of good academic achievemenT and good ciTizenship deTiniTely pays dividends. A TRIBUTE TO A MAN: G. HAROLD ANTRIM, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS On Tuesday, April I7Th, we were profoundly shocked by TirsT The rumor and shorTly afferwards The unalTerable TacT ThaT Mr. AnTrim, our superinTendenT, had died ThaT morning. WiThin a Tew hours of hearing This Tragic news, an enTire communiTy awoke To The recogniTion of a greaT man and an ouTsTanding ciflizen whose work and accomplishmenTs we had Taken for granfed Tor nearly ThirTy years. Wifh painful suddenness we became aware ThaT in knowing him so well, we had undersTood him so poorly. We are ashamed To realize Thai' now we can do so IiTTle Tor This man who did so much. NOT Thal' Mr. AnTrim ever soughT praise or commendaTion Tor whaT he regarded as an almosT sacred obIigaTion To his school and communiTy. Far Trom IT. Indeed posThumous exalTaTion would be unworThy of and alien To The sinceriTfy of his ChrisTian principles. For iT is perhaps The mosT eloquenT TesTimony To his greaTness ThaT he labored unobTrusively and accomplished his mosf signiTicanT achievemenTs wiTh passionaTe anonymiTy. To oThers he IeTT Tame and publiciTyg Tor himself he soughi' only The saTisTacTion of doing his iob well. If The meaning of his deaTh eludes us, The meaning of his life is inescapable. Selfless dedicaTion and Tireless obedience To a purpose and To a communiTy have a value beyond and even in spiTe of our Trivilous maTeriaIisTEic scrambling and scheming. IT is more Than a goal or a noble ideal. IT is a way of life. GreaTness is measured noT by Tlashbulbs popping or honors recorded, buT by The inspiraTion of 'FuTure generaTions Tor whom life is beTTer wiThouT Their even knowing The price IT cosT. This is The meaning and The TulTillmenT of The life of This man who chose To live among us. Pray God Thar we may prove worThy of his love Tor us. EBB TIDE STAFF ,
