Our purpose for doing this is that in later years all you have to do is turn the pages of this book and live again those glorious, vivid scenes of Nineteen Thirty-Six and Seven. We have tried to bring forth a book of the students for the students and by the students. Our last hope is that you will enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed making it, and if you do, we feel that we have not spent our efforts in vain. The members of the staff wish to thank our worthy advisor, Mr. Mall, teachers, student body and business men of Point Place and Toledo, because without their help this book could not have been published. THE SCARLET AND BLACK History of Class of I937 the year 1933 at Point Place High School N ET US hesitate for a moment while we turn back the pages of time to Our first recollection of that year was the selection of Alfred McEwen to guide us out of the harbor into the open sea on our voyage through high school, along with Constance Raitz and William Beach as officers of our ship. When just out of harbor we were initiated by the Sophomores and for quite some distance seaward were, when generally spoken of, addressed as green horns. As our first social activity, the Science Club sponsored a card party and candy sale, which proved us to be capable of handling other duties. Though some at first encountered troubled waters, all at the end of the first lap enjoyed smooth sailing. In our Sophomore year we elected Constance Raitz to take the wheel and sail our ship across the seas on the second year of the course. Jeanne Faunce and Dorothy Hendee served as able mates. We first entertained the Freshman girls at an initiation party. We can- not recall where the boys were on that hilarious occasion. Sailing onward, the Science Club presented Drums of Fury which was enjoyed highly by all. Evelyn Allen and Carrol Fisher enacted the lead- ing roles, supported by a splendid cast. We progressed rapidly and entered deeper yet welcome waters. As we became upperclassmen, we chose jack Pearson as helmsman, and Alfred McEwen and Dorothy DeHaven as first and second mates respec- tively. On this part of our voyage we engaged in a great many social activ- ities and sports. Among these activities were the junior play and the junior Prom. The class play Behind the News was very successfully produced under Mrs. Moss' direction, with a great deal of fun and laughter. The cast was composed of Evelyn Allen, Richard Booth, Phyllis Johnstone, Dan Passino, Harold Maier, Hermine Korman, Ernest Albright, and Leonard Peterson. Page Eighteen POINT PLACE HIGH SCHOOL The Junior Prom, in the form of a Washington Day Ball, was one of our most successful events both socially and financially. As hosts and hostesses to the graduating class at the annual banquet, we spent a very pleasant and long-remembered evening. Evelyn Allen proved to be :1 charming Mistress of Ceremonies. We were very proud of the decorations, the favors and place cards of Dutch shoes and windmills were well in keeping with the Senior Class colors and flower. With this capable crew we soon found ourselves on the swift waters of OUR Senior year. Soon after our last lap was under way, we eagerly elected William Beach to steer us safely into port to make our first important landing. Richard Booth, Dorothy DeHaven, and Jennie Faunce served as our other commanding officers. That fall was devoted to sports and studies. So it was early in February, mid hearts and cupids, a Valentine Dance was sponsored by the Senior Class. Co-chairmen Harold Maier and Beryl Johnstone were especially delighted with the results of their diligent preparations. In the spring of that year the annual card party was given and the success of the previous year was more than repeated. Our last few weeks were busily spent in presenting the play Young Smitty, including Dan Passino, Mildred Jacobs , Phyllis Johnstone, Richard Booth, and an excellent supporting cast, and attending, as guests, the Junior-Senior Banquet as a reward for our earnest efforts. It was with regret that we danced to the last lingering strains of the Senior Prom. Thus we have reached our port-Commencement-and the end of our first important journey. Along the way we may have been showered with raindrops, brightened by sunshine, and blown by strong winds, yet we have held steadfast to our course and we feel that our journey has been worth- while and successful. Our sincere hope is that each and every one of us will, in later life, be able to sail his or her own ship always into some safe harbor while on the seas of life. A tr' Junior Class History HE PRESENT junior Class has a most extraordinary history as I will attempt to show you Their organization as Freshmen consisted of Stanley Miekicki as presidentg Robert Hendee, viceapresidentg and Dorothy Roper, secretary-treasurer. Late in October, these Freshmen held a grand Halloween Party surprising everyone, yet proving that all Freshman are not so inexperienced as is usually believed. With Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Bear, and Mr. Hendrickson advising and leading, these new students prepared to take their place in their upper-classmen roles. During the second year of their high school career, Tom MacDowell was elected presidentg Gertrude Schul.z, vice presidentg and Shirley Bell, secretary-treasurer. A Sophomore Spring Sprint was presented by these students. This was just one of the unique and successful ideas that they have had. They received the plaque, which was presented by the school to the class giving the most educational and interesting assembly programs. Always climbing, climbing, constantly on the upward move, they went up another rung in the ladder of success when they became juniors. The juniors started their activities with the election of their class officers. Jack Passino, president, Carol Fisher, vice presidentg Wallace Garvin, secretaryg Melvin Castleton, treasurer. They presented their play The Tin Hero, with Betty jane France and Carrol Fisher taking the stellar roles, and a supporting cast of Mary Lou Roby, Wallace Garvin, Adelia Riley, Gertrude Schultz, Donald Ricker, jack Passino, Virginia Borchard, june Singleton and Alice Marie Oberdier. Their play was most successful. Another laurel to add to their already large collection. After holding a card party, they began plans for their J-Hop. A most decorative and gala affair. They put their dancce over in fine fashion. The Junior-Senior Banquet, the culmination of their junior year will long be remembered by all. Page Forty-seven THE SCARLET AND BLACK Football Summary 5 OINT Place High School's football team ended its season in great style by winning the cham- ' pionship of the Maumee Valley League for the first time. The Cardinals defeated their foremost rival, Rossford, holding them scoreless throughout the game. Only one game was lost during the season, this to De- Vilbiss. It was, however, not a league game. DeVilbiss Point Place played its opening game on the night of September 18, 1956, at Pazi Field, DeVilbiss High School. Due to the inexperience of the team, the Car- dinals were defeated by a score of 66 to 0. Oak Harbor On September 25, 1936, Point Place traveled to Oak Harbor to meet a small but scrappy team. Oak Harbor scored the first touchdown but from then on it was all Point Place. The final score was 20 to 6-of course, in our favor. The team played a much better game here than at DeVilbiss. Sylvania Point Place played its first league game at Sylvania, October 9th. The game was played on a wet, slippery field which was to the advantage of the Cardinals be- cause of their superior weight. The Point's good block- ing proved the winning factor, the game endng 40 to0 in their favor. The reserves fold faithfulsj played most of the second half. Maumee Point Place played its first home game on October 16th with Maumee. The Cardinal's passing attack func- tioned smoothly and enabled them to win the game with comparative ease. The reserves were in action dur- ing this game also. The final score 35 to 0. Page Forty-eight POINT PLACE HIGH SCHOOL Football Summary Whirmer V On October 24th, Whitmer visited the Point, to participate in the Point Place Home-Coming game. The Home-Coming Day proved quite successful for the Point, a large crowd, a grand day, and another league victory for the Cardinals! The final score: 30 to O. Findlay Playing against a team of what seemed to be giants in comparison to the Point, the fighting spirit of the Cardinals was undaunted as they blocked, passed and tackled to upset an over-confident Findlay team. The turning point of the game occurred as a Cardinal player intercepted a fumble and ran fifteen yards for a touch- down. During the closing minutes of the game Findlay opened a furious aerial attack, which proved fruitless, as Point Place maintained its lead of 12 to 7. Perrysburg On November 6th, Point Place journeyed to Perrysburg, to play one of their toughest rivals. The Cardinals were playing on their merits of the Findlay game and consequently were out-played by the fighting Perrysburg eleven. At the close of the first half, with Perrysburg leading 6 to O, Point Place came back into the game with determination to win. With good play- ing and teamwork the Cardinals were able to defeat these fighters with a score of 19 to 6. Rossford The two mightiest teams of the Maumee Valley League clashed on Friday, November 13th, which proved to be the unlucky day for Rossford, as they met their Waterloo before the undaunted, fighting Point Place team. Completely overwhelmed, the Bulldogs were unable to score a single touchdown. This was the first league defeat for Rossford in three years, and gave the plucky Cardinals their first league championship. Point Place out-played Rossford to the tune of 20 to O. THE SCARLET AND BLACK Basketball Varsity The Varsity played good ball all season and made fine showings in all their games. Although they were greatly handicapped at the start of the season by the loss of one player they managed to pull through not far from the top. The squad contained several veterans and a few new faces. A difficult 14 game schedule faced the former class B cham- pions who were now competing in class A. In four non-league games the team succeeded in recording but a single victory at the expense of a strong Alumni group while losing to three worthy opponents. The competition in the Maumee Valley League was the keenest in the history of the league and while our record of hve games won against five defeats, was not impressive of the type of competition encountered, so grouped the leaders as to place our team in third place. In tournament play we drew Libbey and were defeated by a single point in what was generally conceded to be the best played game of the whole affair. The team was a credit to the school and coach and deservedly earned the plaudits of the student body and community. The tournament was played in elimina- tion style. Two leagues, representing two teams from each class, were formed. The winning team of each league played in the final game for the volleyball championship. The Sophomores retained their laurels of the previous year by defeat- ing the other Sophomore team. The winning Sophomore team consisted of: Thelma Bebb, Dorothy Seeman, Violet Suzor, Mescal Haynes, and Dorothy Rudolph. The second event of the Girls' Intramurals was a basketball tournament. This tournament was conducted quite differently from those of previous years, being played in competition style rather than that of elimination. Each class was represented by two or three teams, divided into two leagues. Points were given to each team attired in gym clothes and for the number of games won. The members of the team with the next highest number of points received certificates. Managers for the various sports I were chosen by Mr. Konnert, and under the guidance of these student managers, teams were organized. Good sportsmanship was displayed in all games. The senior team took the laurels. Among other sports carried on as a part of the intramural program are: horseshoe, indoor baseball, foul shooting and volleyball. Page Fifty-Hve 'A-.'.v.'
