Elle-Mon Foreword We, the members of the Che-Mon Staff of 1953, affectionately dedicate this record of achievement to the most important people in our lives . . . our Moms and Dads. This is only a small tribute to those who have deserved so much. They have fed us, sheltered us, clothed us, scolded us, and advised us. They have toiled for us, sacrificed for us, and put our welfare above all other considerations. It is their love, their hopes, their dreams, that have made the goals of this year possible. We cannot repay them. nor would they wish it, even if we could. As a token of appreciation, however. we should like to link their devotion to this chapter of one year in our lives. Thus it is with love and grati- tude that we dedicate this 1953 issue of the Che-Mon to our folks BELCDRD IS FOLDED INTO THE PAGES OF TIME JN s i Ki ' R 1 ADMINISTRATION FAFULTY UNDERCLASSES FAMIIIAR PERSONS CGME BEFGHE US SEN IORS 1 First Row, left to right: Louis Perry, Dr. Gilbert Bertiaux, Thomas Smith. ANOTHER YEAR HAS PASSED US BY With their best foot forward, the Sophomores set out to plan their year of work and play. They quickly adapted themselves to the daily routine, the activities, and the social life of P. M. H. S. While on the job of snapping pictures of out- standing events in the school, the cameraman could not help noticing the Sophomores as they copied the upperclassmen to prepare themsleves to step ahead come the new year. This group of students proved itself to be exceptionally outstanding in scholarship and was well represented in all fields of activity. They participated wholeheartedly in all clubs open to them. Several members of the class held important posts on the football and basket- ball teams. No, you just couldn't miss those Sophomoresg they had a finger in everything! As gay young Sophomores they were preparing themselves to take over in all fields next year as jolly Juniors. whether they be an outstanding scholar, athlete, or just a regular fellow, everyone helped shape the destiny of his class. Without over-estimating the importance of their class, they feel certain that it is rapidly gaining in prestige, and in its small way it is adding its contribution to the making of this a successful year. They are looking forward to their Junior and Senior years. Stepping up to the position of juniors will be easy for them, since they have a sturdy foundation already built. l37l F RESHMEN THE AT LAST WE BEGIN the class Eager to assume p f 56 has flnally reached the goal of offlcla Hlgh School o h ln Polnt MHTIOH b n loyal members lp What a clas th1S IS' It has always ee full of rlvalry and possesses a school Splflt un equalled by any other group All school func tlons found them attendlng ln force Proud Freshmen announce to wllllng and skeptlcal ears allke that they are one of the largest classes ln the hlstory of PO1Ht Marlon Hlgh School However greenles of every shade reflected ln the cameras whlle the class of 1956 wore thelr best smlles as hlgh1lghtS of the year become lastlng plctures ln the album of hlgh school memorles I tt ghtRlpht lJdyK P d t THE SOCIAL CLIMB h h school how llttle The thrlll of belng ln lg ng through crowded halls report kname lng to the wrong C as hle plays dances and assemblles lml hero worshlp for Fres tatlng the ldeal upperclassmen uld not have been complete d the stars llfe wo hout a lastlng memory of some every ay lncldent Now that thelr flrst year has ended they are glad they could contrlbute a llttle to the aCt1Vl- tles at Polnt MGYIOH where they hope to con- tlnue thelr partlclpatlon ln sports and ln or- anlzatlons durlng the three years to come. eed ln whatever they S Knowlng they wlll succ try we WlSh them good luck and happlness ahead Wit l3l 1 O f Lef 0 ri 1 a S rimme , u eiser, Darla Lou Conn, Paul limpton, Susan Bear sley, and Ri a Stoner. u per class duties, ' ' ' ' g ' , ' ' A 1 you felt hurryi 3 - ' ' ' ' ' . Dorothy Wozniak, joan Palm, Phylis Bowers. Betty Houze, Roberta Clark, and Rich Gursky Qeditorb. Che-Mon Staff This annual is your book of memories, be- cause it reflects life in your school. But behind those words lie much labor and unending plan- ning. The staff worked earnestly and devout- edly. The editor, Richard Gursky, deserves great credit for sacrificing his time for this cause. We know how many gray hairs it caused him. Each member of the editorial staff became a rambling reporter, gathering bits of informa- tion here and there, covering a definite assign- ment by a certain date, and then in combining it all into a complete and interesting story of what happened during the past 180 days of school life in our school. We also thank our adviser, Dr. Van Zandt, for her fine ideas and suggestions. The staff will be very happy if, in the future years, this record of your school's development and history of your school life adds to your memories of happiness of days gone by. .4 PUBLICATICN S WE TRIED TO SYMBOL The Pointer Staff The Pointer staff is a hard-working group of students, who toil energetically trying to make an interesting and worthwhile newspaper for our school. This paper is called The Pointer. The staff is sponsored by Miss Shriver. She teaches it the fundamentals of journalism per- taining to high school publications. Without her fine direction and sheer competency, this paper would never have been a success. Every month there is an interesting cover on The Pointer pertaining to sports, holidays, or some other thing that will attract the students that read it. The staff puts in a great deal of hard work each month planning the articles that go into the newspaper. The combined efforts of the staff, finishing their assignments, typing up material, making plans, and doing all of the duplicating work result in an issue of The Pointer every month. Membership in this fine organization is bestowed only upon individuals showing remarkable talents and ability in the editorial and business functions of high school journalism. l44l IZE ANOTHER YEAR OF IOURNALISTIC ACHIEVEMENT CHE MON STAFF Standing, left to right: J. UWB THE LEAD-ERSH These capable students serve our school and do a very commendable job. They were elected by you to represent your town rooms and classes as the high school government. Student Congress may discuss and pass any rules con- cerning student life in the high school, except in matters pertaining to courses of study. class work. and discipline. A big improvement brought about by this year's Student Congress is the Hall Patrol. which helps keep the halls quiet during classes. The main purpose of the Stu- dent Congress is to help regulate student ac- tivity and to help solve school problems con- cerning the students by aiming to carry out the students' desires. Participation in this or- ganization helped to acquaint the students with the principles of self-government and also famil- iarize them with the duties and privileges of democracy. The Student Congress was organized to be the representative body of the senior high school. The purpose of the council is to serve as a medium between faculty and student body. to promote student participation. and to contribute to the general welfare of the school by helping to foster school spirit and fellowship among the pupils and by promoting the practical principles of democracy. Dr. Mildred Van Zandt is the capable adviser of this cooperative group. l47l PATROL BOYS These boys are selected on the basis of re- liability, trustworthiness, scholarship, and char- acter. It is a highly coveted honor to be chosen for the squad, and all the boys feel that they are greatly privileged to be sponsored by Mr. Robinson. These fine bunch of co-workers get their reward in a trip to Washington, D. C., for serving the community by watching over and guiding our little ones to and from school daily. STUDENT GUIDE The Student Guide is composed solely with the purpose of providing information to the new students in our school. The students may find very much information in this little book. Betty I-Iouze is the efficient editor of this year's guide, and she deserves a vote of thanks and appreciation from all of us. New teachers also use this book for their various needs. Mr. Walker was the adviser for the Student Guide this year, and deserves much credit for the help he cheerfully contributed towards making the book a success. We recognize the fact that this is the most important position a man can hold, for without the farmer's reap of harvest and grain, we would be under a great lack of physical strength. These boys have various projects which turn out to be wonderful upbringings. Mr. Robinson is very proud of these boys, as many of them have won State awards for their various products. TRI-HI-Y The Tri-Hi-Y of P. M. H. S. has been or- ganized since 1944. A couple of years ago the Tri-Hi-Y was divided into two groups, known as the Beta and the Alpha. The purpose of this club is To create, maintain, and extend through- out the school and community high standards of Christian character. Besides their annual Semi-Formal, the Tri- Hi-Y also holds swimming parties and informal dances. The club is under the direction of Miss Downing and Mrs. Loriaux. l48l ALL OF US BUSY C L U B S PEOPLE MAKE A VERY HAPPY WORLD PATROL BOYS First Row. left to right: G. Backer. B. Locl-card. M. FIGHTING POINTERS ON THE MARCH The Point Marion Pointers opened their 1952 football season by defeating the winner of last year's game, Bellmar, in a thrilling game, 14-6, avenging their 30-0 defeat of last year .... Point Marion traveled all the way to East Huntingdon to play their first Class B game where they took it on the chin from a tough team, 27-6 .... A favored University High team caught the Pointers on the rebound and suffered a beating both mentally and physically, coming out on the short end of the score of,26-7 .... Point Marion won their first Class B contest by beating Centerville in a last-minute thriller, coming back from a half-time deficit of 7-6 to take the game by a score of 12-7 .... Mason- town, Point Marionls arch rivel, came to Point Marion with the thought of repeating last year's 29-0 win, but Point Marion scored what proved to be the winning touchdown of the game early in the first period. Masontown made a come- back but the rain and our defenses combined with their fumbles stopped them. The score was 7-6 in favor of the Pointers .... Point Marion and Perryopolis met on Perry's field in what proved to be the Class B Fayette County cham- pionship game with the Pointers running all over a heavier Perryopolis team, winning 21-O. . . . Point Marion swamped Mapletown in a scoring spree, 27-0 .... In the last game of the season, Point Marion lost their second game of the year to a stronger Georges team by the score of 19-0. Point Marion had their best season in years this season, winning six games while losing only two. They beat the other two Class B teams in Fayette County to take the Class B Fayette County championship, receiving a beautiful trophy for their efforts. Midway in the season the Pointers got new uniforms. Four of our outstanding players made the All-County Class B team. They were: Donnie Dingle, Jimmy Kovach, Ronnie LeFevre, and Bob Palermo. Next year's team will miss the services of the following seniors who played great football this year: Dick Crawford, Larry Darby, Andy Drop, Delbert Easter, Ronnie Le- Fevre, Jimmy Kovach, Bob Palermo, Bob Scott and Bill Uhler. But, nevertheless, we hope next year's team will be as good as the Pointers were this year. 7 l55l H hs ying! ,nv 5 GRID HEROES ,vw nr LAWRENCE DARBY EDWARD VKILTROLT DELBILRT PAQTI-R BILL LHLPR ROB!-RT SC I RON 'XLD LE FENRF ANIJRI-KN DRUI ROBFRT PAI FRN10 I-XVIFS KOR ACH 5 OTT RILHXRIJ CRXXKIURIJ . s Q I x A ' M, ,' 'M ,W 41 M, ,ff A , ff ' , , ,H YI f' . , Q' 4' ' ' f an .rf , - - fy f l V V , X 5. Maybe we didn't have a championship bas- ketball team this year, but we could have been as good as any team we played. Our biggest trouble was that we just couldn't play a full game. In most of our games we would jump off to an early lead, but we would blow the lead late in the game, or we would play a bad first half then try to make a hopeless comeback. If our basketball team could have put four of these good quarters together we would have won out over any team in our section, and if we could have played four good quarters every game, we probably would have taken the sec- tional championship. But we didn't do all these things so we ended up in sixth place in our league, winning three sectional games while losing nine. Even though we didn't win the sectional or any other championship, one of our players, Donnie Dingle, made the All-Section team and Bill Uhler should have made it also. Our coach, Loran Ward, and all the players worked long and hard to produce a winning team, but it just didn't seem to work out. We hope next year's team will play and work as hard as this yearls team did, but we also hope it will show a better record in the won and lost column. Andy Drop, Ronnie LeFevre, Bill Uhler, Jack Wiley, and jack Daugherty will be the seniors taken out of next year's lineup by graduation. First Row, left to right: Buddy Quertermont, Ronnie Le-Favre. VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is an honor club set aside for boys who have participated in half the quar- ters in either basketball or footballg in other words, for boys who have earned a letter. Mr. Ward, who is the sponsor, has done much for the betterment of the club. To belong to the varsity club is the goal of every boy in high school, especially those boys interested in sports, because not only does the club present the ath- lete with a letter, but also with a jacket in the boy's senior year. In order to obtain these priv- ileges, the member is subject to a strict initia- tion. LEADERS CLUB The Leaders' Club is for girls who are out- standing in athletic ability, and for girls who have a desire to participate in sports. The Lead- ers' Club provides sports events such as swim- ming, volleyball, and basketball for its mem- bers. The club also provides competition in basketball games with other leaders' clubs from other high schools. The Leaders' Club is tradi- tional in our high school, and has a rigid initia- tion to undergo before a girl can become a member. The Leaders' Club is sort of a varsity club for girls. The Leaders' Club is under the capable direction of Mrs. Kapnicky. l60l OUR SCHOOL NURSE AND GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR These two fine ladies are the most industrious ones in our school. They hardly ever have a moment's rest. Miss Van Zandt, outside of her many service duties, teaches Problems of Democracy to the seniors. Mrs. Emerson guards students' health all year round. She also takes care of any emergencies which might occur. Mrs. Lorena Emerson. Dr. Mildred Van Zandt. MAINTENANCE MEN The busy men that we see prac- tically every day in the school are our janitors. Mr. Mart Stoner, Mr. George McEnney, and Mr. Fleming Hostetler are always on the job cleaning things up or repairing them around the school. They keep the grounds atractive and we should all cooperate in the utmost to give them all the help we can. Mr. Mart Stoner. Mr. Fleming Hostetler. Mr. George McEnney. CAFETERIA COOKS Mrs. Collett, Mrs. Tenny, and Mrs. Grow, in their capacities as cafeteria supervisors, are firm believers in the old axiom that 'fThe way to a man's heart is through his stomachf' How- ever. in this case, the students and faculty are the people who are the satisfied connoisseurs of good food.
