We have tried to accomplish our purpose by adopting a very modern trend-that ot photography. The annual contains many candid camera shots ot the school and ot the students engaged in their activities. THE EDITOR DEDICATION To Cecelia M. Collier, friend, teacher. and adviser, whose cheerful words and never-failing encouragement have helped many a Point Loma student over rough spots in his high school career. we gratefully dedicate this annual. .r-.3 f- : XB W I .AU ,a .,:-. S. B. Commissioners. Their enthusiasm and ability were so contagious that the rest ot the students were eager to support all their projects. The corrwmissoners began the year by organizing a new dernerit system and by putting over a successtul drive tor the sale ot A. S. B. cards. The programs tor assemblies and events ot the athletic season are to be noted tor their unusual success. The Commission planned the very well attended rally dance and the A. S. B. Ball at the House ot Hospitality. ln the spring an ambitious Clean-Up campaign and a skating party were sponsored by the Commission. Point Loma's commission torm t o student government has shown great improve- ment in etticiency and smoothness ot o er t' h p a ion t is year, and the student bod pride in it. Twelve y takes WINTER CLASS N FEBRUARY one of Point Loma's most unusual classes was graduated. The winter class of I939, the smallest in the school's history, was com- posed of nineteen members. Although their numbers were small, each member worlced so efficiently and cooperatively that the affairs of the group were planned and carried out with great success. The nineteen. favored by luck, found perfect snow weather at Cuyamaca State Rancho where they spent their Ditch Day. The fun of Ditch Day was equaled only by the Seniors' enjoyment of their party at Dick Montgomery's ho-me. The class initiated a type of graduation exer- cises which may become a tradition for winter classes at Point Loma. The exercises, informal but truly impressive in their simplicity, were held during regular assembly hours in the presence of the senior high students. Jeffries l-lall served as class president with Dick Gilliland as vice- president and Adella Wickham, secretary. The February class has at- tributed its accomplishments to the great enthusiasm shown by its sponsor, Ethel Henderson. by the teachers, and by Mr. Swenson. The class left a message of encouragement and good wishes to the classes which will graduate from Point Loma in the future. Point Loma, with its traditions and opportunities, inspired the class to worlc toward this ideal, and Mr. Swenson, the teachers, and the class sponsor, John C. Lamott, have given untailing and invaluable aid. Each member ot the class has worlced to contribute in some way to the success ot the group as a whole, and some have received recognition tor their outstanding achievements. The class selected its otticers because ot their service and leadership in past years, and so well have they executed their duties that the class is proud to be represented by them. Russel Crane has served as president ot the senior class, Jaclc Palmer as vice-president, Ryo Morilcawa as scretary, and John Kearns as treasurer. Many seniors were on the tootball team which won so many victories this year, and John Kearns, Dave Cobb, and Chattey Weiber were chosen on the All-Metro League team. Seniors of outstanding scholastic achievement were Alice Casselman, Marcella Laddon, l-lollas Williams, Peggy Mayer, and Walter Gamble. Seniors chosen on the A. S. B. Commission included James Lowell, general attairsi David Porter, tinance: Jean Sherwin, girls' activities: Dorothy Davis, girls' athletics: Jaclc Palmer, interscholastic athletics: Jeanne Walden, historian: Barbara Cooper, clerlc. The seniors will never torget the caretree tun ot swimming and picniclcing at Del -Mar on Ditch Day. The Prom at Hotel del Coronado was the lcind that every senior dreams ot. Then with the Ford Bowl as a lovely setting, impressive exercises tittingly closed the high school lite ot Point Loma's I939 seniors. The one hundred and titty graduates have reached their goal. Now they are eagerly going torth to seelc the new desires and aims that their widened horizons will open to them. Sixteen Jack Anderson Herbert Hoover High, Pointer Statt 4. Baseball 4. Under the leadership ot Jane Maclcey, editor-in-chiet, the annual statt worlced together in complete cooperation. Jettries l-lall, February graduate, was assistant editor. The success ot the annual sale was due to the spirit aroused by the tar-reaching campaign conducted by George Claspill, business manager, and the sales manager, Diclr Atwood. l-lollas Williarns, literary editor, was ably assisted by Janc Therien, teature editor, and Peggy Mayer and Walter Gamble. Weddington Couch was in charge ot sports. Dorothea Queen headed the art statt, assisted by Nancy Tatum. Ryo Morikawa and her assistant, Reeve Gould, were responsible tor the increased excellence ot both posed and candid pictures. The annual statt is indebted to Kenneth Christianson, Ruth Henry, and Ruby Grey Johnson, taculty sponsors, tor the time they so willingly contributed to malre this annual a success. Margaret l-leryet and Lincoln Roclc are to be thanlced tor their valuable assistance as typists. Thirty-tive MUSIC HE amazing progress of Point Loma's three orchestras and three bands under the direction of Edward Janowslcy has become evident to all. Mr. Janowslcy offers a valu- able opportunity to students who wish to develop their talents, widen their experi- ence, and bring great pleasure to other music lovers. Orchestra The senior string orchestra, the only one in San Diego composed entirely of string instruments, has become favorably recognized because of its very fine performances for the meeting of the Principals' and Supervisors' Club at the Cuyamaca Club, at the City Orchestra Festival at Russ Auditorium, and for Open House and school assemblies. Band The senior band has entertained the school with its vigorous and stirring music at rallies, football games, and assemblies. The band's program at the Variety Show was very interesting in that both classical and popular compositions were played with the same skill and success. The band participated in the City Band Festival and received an unusual honor in being invited to play for the Portuguese festival. Glee Club HIS year Point Loma's various singing groups under Vera Jane Parrott have brought much pleasure to all who love music. Noticeable in their worlc is the desire of each individual to make his part as perfect as possible so that the blended effect of the whole group is beautifully artistic. The number of glee clubs has been increased this year. The successful results of the work done by these groups were shown at the various assemblies, the Christmas programs, the City-County Schools' Festival in May, the Vesper Service, and the Graduation. I-IONOI2 SOCIETY HE senior high branch of the Honor Society, Chapter I89 of the California Scho- Iarship Federation, is sponsored by Ethel Henderson. Members spent their full ditch day at Showley's, Hage's, and seeing lf I Were King. Point Loma's chapter was well represented at the district meeting at San Dieguito Union High and the meeting of Southern California branches at Long Beach. The junior high branch, sponsored by Helen Bagley, interested the whole school in its spelling contest. OFFICERS Jane Mackey ,,,,,., a, a , .,..... President ,.... .... .......... 'sift i SPORTS LTI-lOUGl-l Point Loma shitted its coaching statt considerably when last year's head coach, Joe Beerkle, went to San Diego l-ligh, the athletic teams continued the winning streak they started early last year. The tootball team tied with La Jolla tor another place in the Metro- politan League Championship. The track, basketball, and baseball teams also made a tine showing, gaining tirst and two second places, respectively. The success and excellent record ot the teams is due to the tine spirit which the boys themselves showed, the enthusiastic student backing, and the outstanding work ot the coaching statt headed by Coach Charles Wilson and including William Bailey, Lucien C. Atherton, and Frederick Gentles. Forty-seven l i VARSITY FOOTBALL NOTHER championship for Point Loma! Richard Marques set a new one mile record when he ran the distance in 4144.9 as compared to the old record of 4148.4 set in l935 by Clair Berdel of Sweetwater. now State College track captain.
