Now you leave, whither you go, when you will return, if ever, are the questions in our minds and hearts. We instructors are wondering just how much influence we have had upon your real lives? We've taught you some things, We hope, but, will you go out and do some things because of the urge you have received from us? And, will you refrain from doing others because of the example We have tried to be to you in correct living? Will you remember us because of the subject you took in our class, or because of the man or woman We were to you? Of course, we are hoping it is the latter! For, it will surprise you how soon many things you have thought necessary in your school career will fade from your memory, and how some act or word of ours will grow in importance and influence. We wish you God speed most heartily! May you become citizens worthy of the time, money and energy spent upon you! May Point Loma High never have cause but to be proud of you as her sons and daughters! Your Principal and Friend, PETE W ROSS Best of wishes to Point Loma's largest graduating class. Old friends are in it-boys and girls of yesterday to become the men and women of tomorrow. The essentials of character, of education you have obtained at Point Loma during your high school days should contribute much to your lives. May success be yours and happiness bless you daily. The representatives of the various senior high classes met during the fall semester and wrote a new constitution which was approved by the student body and put into etirect in February. Under the ruling of the new constitution, the entire school is run by a Congress composed of senate and house. The senate is composed of thirteen representatives from senior high school rooms: the house is composed similarly of junior high representatives. The two divisions function separately under diiferent cabinets except when some problem that affects the school as a whole is to be discussed. The senate met regularly during home room periods to discuss plans and problems affecting the senior high. Percy Shepherd, as head ol' a newly organized safety committee, met regularly with representatives of other schools at the Rotary club to discuss means of preserving safe conditions around school. The senate also discussed the possibility of installing an A. S. li. office, where the officers will meet regularly and where students will be able to voice their criticisms and opinions. Plans lor a trophy case are under way. This will be placed in the main hall so that all may enjoy our trophies. March ll-There have been loads of dances this month. One, the Gac dance, was given at the Point Loma Club House and everyone had a great time. April 18-The Iunior Ais presented the hrst of a series of dances that are to raise money for our senior prom. April 5-The glee clubs gave an operetta today. It was good, but the shock came when we were ushered out after what we thought was the hrst act. April 22-The baseball season started today, and the senior class was well represented by Hal Shepherd. April 28-Annual plans are hnally nearing completion. The business staff has been selling advertising to everybody's father. The annual contest has started in earnest and three captains have been chosen, Bob Dienes, Harold Shepherd and Betty Plaister. A chart has been set up in the hall and there is much interest in the three pointers that represent the teams. It looks like Bob Dienes is going to break the tape. May l-The annual May Pete was given today in the auditorium. In the Pageant of the Hours. Bernice Rhode represented Morning: Hattie Shepherd, Noon: and Mary Fitz- gerald. Night. One of the gayest dances on the program was a tango given by the Senior A girls. May 6-Enter Madame and her suiters. Madame was ably performed by Althea Osborne and the supporting cast was excellent. May 14-The Iunior A Benefit Bridge given at the home of Charlotte Bassler attracted many seniors. Beautiful prizes were presented to those holding high score-cards. May 21-The annual Glee Club picnic held at Mission Beach was a great success. After a swim, there was a huge bonlirc and songs. May 31-Senior Ditch Dayl All seniors donned their holiday clothes and away we went, trusting that Point Loma could survive the day without us. Iune 19-Baccalaureate Services were held tonight. lt was very impressive and more than one senior had a lump in his throat. Iune 25-The graduation ceremony was one of the loveliest Point Loma ever had. The grad- uation march was played while the senior procession wended its way slowly to the flower-bedecked platform. Our sentiments were Fittingly expressed by members of the class and delightful musical numbers were presented by the Glee Club. Diplomas were presented and afterwards an informal reception was held. The Seniors realized that now the time had come to bid Point Loma a fond adieu. Iune 24-The prom-our prom. The dance was given at the Elks, club and the music was furnished by the Rhythm Boys. Of course everyone had a glorious time, but itis just a bit sad to realize that this is the end of oneis high school life. Well, little diary, you have served your purpose in recording one important semester and now I Write regretfully- Fz'nz'.v. Our dean, Cecelia M. Collier, has been a most efficient sponsor for the past two years. The first event on the Girls' League calendar was the annual Dove Ball given in the music room in honor of the new girls and the teachers. Each guest was personally invited and escorted by a League member. The Girls' Hi-Iinx, given on December tenth and eleventh, was a big success. A night- club idea was used as the theme. The proceeds went into the trasury account to be used to meet the needs of the club. Throughout the year th: Girls' League has been very active in social service work, furnishing uniforms and shoes for those unable to afford them, preparing baskets for the needy at Christmas and Thanksgiving, and sending dolls to various children's homes. From time to time the Girls' League has been able to obtain interesting speakers to talk on vocational guidance and other subjects of interest to.girls. Mrs. Wallace, a well known Southern California authority, spoke on 'KGirls' Problems. Mrs. Fish, from the San Diego courthouse. gave a talk on vocational guidance. A representative of a nationally famous pattern company spoke on styles of the day and displayed living models showing the mode of dress for every occasion. A beauty expert from a well known beauty salon spoke on the use of cosmetics. FALL SEBIESTER SPRING SEMEsTER President ..,,,,,, , ,..,,,, .,.,,,,,,,, T hea Carlson President , ...., . .. It is composed of one hundred eighty members. Every senior high school boy auto- matically becomes a member. The main purpose of the Federation is to get all the boys together, to discuss their problems, to promote various boys' activities, to promote order and discipline, and to arouse interest and action in school projects. Although boys' federations have existed in other schools for some time, this is the Federations first year at Point Loma High. To the fall semester OECCFS belongs the credit of organizing the association, drawing up the constitution, and starting the activities. The first Federation dance, given last November at the Wednesday Clubhouse in honor of the football men, proved to be the brightest social event of the year. It has now completed another year of activity under the able guidance of Mrs. Iames A. Smith. The Senior Club aimed to carry out the Girl Reserve purpose, to Find and give the best, through regular meetings twice a month with most of the time given to helpful discussions. Diiierent girls gave inspirational talks at each meeting. The Triangle gave a pageant, Girl Reserves Around the World, for the National Golden lubilee celebration during the fall semester. Activities of the year include an act for the Girls, Hi-Iinx, a dance at the VVednesday Clubhouse, a program for a Y. W. C. A. luncheon at the Y. W. C. A., a Leap Year's party at the Y. VV. C. A., a Dad and Daughter banquet at the Y. W. C. A., a dinner-meeting as the guests of La Iolla Triangle, a banquet with the Hi-Y at the Mayliower Tea Room, and a picnic at Mission Beach. A bridge tea was given at the school to raise mone for sendii -r y ig representa- tives to Asilomar, the annual Girls, Reserve camp. The Hi,Y has been one of the most active organizations in the school this year. With the two mountain trips. the filling of Christmas baskets, ioint meetings with Grossmont Hi-Y. and the banquet at the MalHower Inn with the Girl Reserves, its members have been kept busy throughout the year. The first trip to the mountains was to Palomar. Quite a few members of the faculty went with them. After a verv successful week-end they all returned to the city. On the second trip. which was to the desert, Mr. Austin accompanied the fellows and stayed with them during the day and night that they were there. During the Christmas holidays the boys sent three much-needed baskets of foodstuffs to families in and near our school. Concerning the meeting in which our l-Ii-Y acted as the hosts to the Cirossmont Hi-Y it was very successful. After listening to several interesting speakers. the meeting adjourned to the cafeteria where lunch was served by the Girl Reserves. With such a list of activities that the lli-Y has accomplished this year, it will have to strive hard to advance to keep up to the same standard, but it intends to do so, regardless. Under the bright lights of Navy field, the Pointers entered the battle without their captain, Morris Tombler, who was out of the game because of a fractured leg. In the First quarter Hoover reached our 14-yard line where they then put the ball over for the hrst and last touchdown. They then successfully converted, to make the score 7 to O. For the remaining quarters, the Pointers held the powerful Hoover lines and backs scoreless. In the final game of the year on the La Iolla Held, the Pointers won by a 14 to 0 score. The first touchdown came when Likes caught a pass and galloped over for a touchdown. lack Monise, whose educated toe was discovered in this game, put the ball squarely between the uprights to make the score 7 to O. Then in the third quarter, Birge Anthony fell on one of La Iolla's fumbles behind their goal line to make the score 13 to 0. Iack Monise again parked the ball over the crossbars for the extra point. The rest of the game was scoreless until the final gun shot. Coach Lambert drilled his charges on a smooth working aerial attack and fast reverses and criss-crosses. The Loman's will have a powerful team next year with 15 returning lettermen under their leader for 1932, Pete Kovac. The Pointers placed on the all-city team picked by city league coaches. Pete Kovac won the tackle berth for the second year straight. Dick Cook won his berth at guard, and Lowell Fowler was named the left-halfback. This yearls team voted for a three weeks' spring practice, mainly to develop members in handling the ball and learning new plays. This year's lettermen include Capt, Morris Tombler, Bob Muehleiscn, Bob Anderson, lack Monise, Carl Commander, Gene Muehleisen, Manuel Machado, Ralph Benton, Birge Anthony, Harry Woodward, Harry Titus, George Burrows, Pete Kovac QCapt. 19321, Lowell Fowler. Andrew Silva, George Likes, Walt Schachtebeck, Iimmy Scott, Bill Recksiek, Clinton Campbell, Emmett Fowler, Bob Dienes, Dick Cook. Dick Chadwick and Paul Kettenberg were managers. Of this group, the following will not return next year: Morris Tombler, Carl Commander, Walt Schachtebeck, Bill Recksiek, Iimmy Scott and Bob Dienes. The purpose of the team was to train men for future use on the varsity. In practice, under the guidance of an outside coach, and in every game, the reserve team had an enjoyable time. The team practiced every day after school for the whole season. In practice Marshall taught them to block and to tackle, taught the linesmen how to get through and how to hold the opposing line, taught the backheld to sidestep, to twirl, and to run through the line. By doing this, Marshall has developed some good material for next year's varsity. Ioe Shreve was chosen captain at the end of a successful season. THE POINTER Page Fiffy-.vrzfclz Qylzaf flze mmol Gfasses ve em obzq The Stage Craft and Drama Classes have been without a doubt the most active organ- ization in the school this year. With the able guidance of such students as Bill McDavid and Richard Cook, business managers for the First semester, and Percy Shepherd the second semester, the Finances of these guilds have thrived. The advertising under direction of Bob Muehleisen, and the stage managership under Frank Machado and Paul Kettenburg have most certainly done their part to let the school know that there is such a thing as drama classes. Other students who head the different departments are: electrician, Merle Meyers: dressing room keeper, Fred Meyers: design, Frances Hall, costumes, Beverly Bostick and Mary Gonzales, and the house manager, George Hubbs. With the fine co-ordination of these people it has been possible for the various classes, under the able direction of Mr. Shepherd, to put on an amazing number of plays. During the first semester Grammer Gurtonis Needle, by the girls, pantomime class, the Christmas play, Why the Chimes Rang, and On the Stairs were produced. The second semester has been even more prolihc. Enter Madamef' K'Racketty-Packetty House, Patelin, by the boys' rhythm classg 'lDear Departedf, and a series of one act plays consisting of Minuet, 'First Dress Suit, were a number of the plays produced. This does not include the Oratorical Contest, won by Elbert Whaleng the speakers sent to different organizations during Educational Week, various exhibitions of the Rhythm and Panto- mime classes, and dances given the casts and stage crew after each of the maior plays. With such an array of accomplishments to their credit, it is not hard to see why the Drama class is placed first on the list of activities. With the money which they have taken in, they are going to buy some much needed pieces of stage property. VVhen a group of students are able to help themselves and the school so well at the same time. one is certain to hear more of them in the future. The Stage Craft and Drama classs are not an exception to this rule. Page Fifty-figfif THE POINTER i els Mefody Is it youth that causes this strange unrest, This longing to get away?
