POINT ARENA UNION HIGH SCHOOL Point Arena, California FOGHORN Caren Cossi, Editor Dedication We, the student body of P.A.U. H.S., dedicate this, our 1961 Foghorn, to a man who, in just two short years, has gained the affection and admir- ation of everyone wno has associated wita him. His avid interest in student affairs, his ability as both a teacher and coach, and his unquenchable spirit, are the attributes wnicn have endeared him to us. Principal's Message One of the greatest needs of our age is the need for development of self-reliance in the individual. As our government has been pushed in the direction of a wel- fare state, our citizens have become more and more de- pendent on others and less confident in their own a- bilities. Tnere is a growing tendency for people to settle for security at the expense of their creative abil- ities. Gur world still needs pioneers, inquiring minds, venturesome personalities, more tnan it ever did during anytime in history. Our nigh school graduates should realize that there is a great premium in life waiting for the bold, the alert, and the venturesome. Foster your strengths, be positive in your thinking and do not nesitate to take chances in life for here lies the re- wards in personality development as well as in material gains. You must believe in yourself and in your powers to cope wita the adversities of life. Develop your self-reliance and strike out with determination and vigor. So it is witn a feeling of fellow- snip and gratitude tnat we dedicate tnis annual to you, Mr. Garrett, our friend and coacn. MRS. MARGARET B1AGGI MR. EDWARD SPRINGER Music, Mathematics L0J1 o MRS. Allen, and our class president was Caren Cossi. Although our class members were very active in the many organizations of the school, we had no major class activities. The year 1959 marked the year that we, as Sophomores, began to organize ourselves and to prepare for becoming upper-classmen. Our advisor was again Mr. Allen; our president was Gary Beall. Our main activity was the annual Freshman Reception. Then it was 1960, and, as Juniors, we had two large responsibilities facing us--the Jr.-Sr. Prom and the Jr.-Sr. Play. With the help of such money-making activities as selling concessions, we put on a very successful Prom, Tropicana. The play Cheaper By the Dozen was also a success, although quite a bit of credit must go to the Seniors and to Pixie, a Saint Bernard. Our advisor was Mrs. Ethel Hood, and our president was Jason Franci. Now, we are Seniors, and a milestone has been reached. Our last year was made more mem- orable by such activities as Sneak Day, the Jr.-Sr. Play, and the Jr.-Sr. Prom, given in our honor. Our advisor was Mr. Victor Kingwell, and our president was again Gkry Beall. After four happy, eventful years, we must leave, but we go with the confidence that the end of our high school career is the beginning of a success story. 8 Senior CALVIN PARKS F.F.A. 1,2,3,4. Our most important activities were the Junior-Senior Prom and the Junior-Senior Play. Our money-making projects have been selling of concessions at games, sponsoring victory dances, and giving cake and candy sales. The Junior class has been well represented in sports. Sophomore Activities Our sophomore year was a trifle more prosperous than when we were freshmen. We, at one time, held the position of being the wealthiest class at P.A.U.H.S. The freshmen were pleased with the reception we honored them with on October 1. A bake sale, after-game dances, and other fund raising projects were among the activities in which we engaged. Our year as sopho- mores was an intellectual and prosperous one, while at the same time it provided great fun. Some of our male members were top stars on the sports list. If we remain ambitious, our years as upper- classmen will fulfill our greatest expectations. 18 STEVE PETERSEN PATTY NELSON RICKEY IVERSEN HAZEL BEWLEY SHIRLEY GRAVES LEIGHTON NELSON LINDA SWIFT LYNN CAUGHEY TOM VINCENT ANN LONG EDWARD PORTEOUS DONNA RICHARDSON KATHY PIPER STEVEN FRANCI BILLIE COLLINS ROGER EDWARDS JOHN IVERSEN DEBORAH NICHOLSON MARLIE DAHL DAVID STORNETTA BOB HUSMAN BETTY BRACKETT JANET McMILLEN GAYLE BISHOP DAVID NESS DENNIS LEIGHTON JOAN GRAY KAREN CAMPBELL JOHN JOHNSON CAROLYN STORTS RON GALLETTI REX ALLEN SUSAN BIAGGI GARY SWIFT MARSHA COLE HARRY CLYDE GARY STORNETT JIM MALLATT CAROLE POTTER ALBERT G.
