dication It is with a deep feeling of respect and gratitude that we, the annual staff of Point Arena High School, dedicate this '58“ Foghorn to Mr. Oglesby, our principal. Under his ad- ministration we have seen the student body government rise to considerable power. He has given us the opportunity of proving that democratic principles can and do work with people of high school age. Although he has had a sincere interest in all of us, it has been his policy to pay particular attention to those who need it most. In summing it up, thank you for your interest, consider- ation, and for a job well done. The annual staff, in particular, would like to thank Mr. Oglesby for his advice and support without which we could not have put out this annual. The graduating class will be remembei ed as having completed high school in the era of “Sputnick.” This reference will not do justice to the contributions you as individuals or as a class have made to this particular small high school community. Recognizing the “Egghead” or the intellectual or the person with ability has proven the maturity of your judgement. Your student body and class officers almost without exception are students with proven ability as scholars and leaders. Under their influence the atmosphere of the school has developed into one of which we all feel proud. If you carry this democratic but selective program into the more adult world when you leave this school, you will find it in keeping with ideas that student bodies of more advanced insti- tutions of learning are advocating. Ability is a must for national, state, and lo- cal leaders. You seniors will be voters in a iew short years. The individual that you support .t any political level should be one that you know to be competent. Individuals that gain positions of leadership only on the basis of political affil- iation, religious connection, or by racial asso- ciation are to be suspect. None of these char- acteristics guarantees ability. Close scrutiny of incumbent office seakers will force them to stand on their record. Untried, would-be leaders, also have parts that can easily be ascertained. The high school record of such neophytes is often a good source to seek recom- mendation. The responsibilities you have assumed as outstanding high school students should prove valued aids for assuming a like position in an adult world. 2 Waif Oglesby
