dication It is with a deep feeling of respect and gratitude that we, the annual staff of Point Arena High School, dedicate this '58“ Foghorn to Mr. Oglesby, our principal. Under his ad- ministration we have seen the student body government rise to considerable power. He has given us the opportunity of proving that democratic principles can and do work with people of high school age. Although he has had a sincere interest in all of us, it has been his policy to pay particular attention to those who need it most. In summing it up, thank you for your interest, consider- ation, and for a job well done. The annual staff, in particular, would like to thank Mr. Oglesby for his advice and support without which we could not have put out this annual. The graduating class will be remembei ed as having completed high school in the era of “Sputnick.” This reference will not do justice to the contributions you as individuals or as a class have made to this particular small high school community. Recognizing the “Egghead” or the intellectual or the person with ability has proven the maturity of your judgement. Your student body and class officers almost without exception are students with proven ability as scholars and leaders. Under their influence the atmosphere of the school has developed into one of which we all feel proud. If you carry this democratic but selective program into the more adult world when you leave this school, you will find it in keeping with ideas that student bodies of more advanced insti- tutions of learning are advocating. Ability is a must for national, state, and lo- cal leaders. You seniors will be voters in a iew short years. The individual that you support .t any political level should be one that you know to be competent. Individuals that gain positions of leadership only on the basis of political affil- iation, religious connection, or by racial asso- ciation are to be suspect. None of these char- acteristics guarantees ability. Close scrutiny of incumbent office seakers will force them to stand on their record. Untried, would-be leaders, also have parts that can easily be ascertained. The high school record of such neophytes is often a good source to seek recom- mendation. The responsibilities you have assumed as outstanding high school students should prove valued aids for assuming a like position in an adult world. 2 Waif Oglesby LEFT TO RIGHT: Jack Vincent, clerk; Raymond Ohleyer. We received initiation at the Freshman Reception given by the sophomores. After we settled down to high school life we organized some activities. Some of them were; after game dances, two beach parties, candy sales and a noon dance. Our advisor was Mr. Sapsis. At the beginning of our sophomore year we welcomed the new freshmen by giving the traditional Freshman Reception. Some of our other activities were; after game dances, candy sales, and even a car wash, in which everyone participated and had a lot of fun. In the spring the whole class plus guests from some of the other classes went to Petaluma on a swimming trip, which everybody enjoyed very much. Our advisor was again Mr. Sapsi As juniors, we received the job of selling the concessions at football and basketball games. That, plus other money raising acitivities, gave us the money needed to put on the Junior Prom. The theme of the Prom was ‘'Carousel , and both the decorations and the dance itself were a big success. Combined with talent from the senior class, we put on a three act play, “Bolts and Nuts”, which was a big success. In the spring we again went on a swimming trip, this time to Ukiah. We had as much, if not more, fun as we did the first trip. Our advisor was again Mr. Sapsis. Finally we began the long awaited year as seniors. Our advisors this year were Mr. Snow and Mr. Sapsis as associate. We started our last year off with a few candy sales, and noon time movies for the student body. In November we put on an assembly for the student body. It consisted of musical numbers, and comic skits, the program concluded with our class song which was written by Mr. Sapsis. The junior-senior play was a big event again this year. This year we got to sit back and let the juniors work to put on the Junior Prom. We all liked the idea of being seniors and having the Prom be in our honor. The biggest and most important event of the year was, of course, graduation. As we face the future, we feel confident because we know our four wonderful years of high school life have prepared us to meet life's obstacles. On September 12, 1957, school again started in Point Arena after a period of swimming, vacationing, or in many cases, working. This year was to be slightly different, due to the fact that we were now upperclassmen. This gave us no special rights or privileges around the school but there was a special feeling in the hearts of all of the new Juniors. This year we had two important functions to take care of. We had to put on the Prom and participate in the Junior-Senior play, and since the Prom would cost us quite a bit of extra money, we had charge of ue concessions at the ball games. Most of us think that this year was the best in high school because we always had another year to look forward to. 15 opnomore Snaps 17 BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right; Kathne Carr, Linda Wilson. It was a big success and the class profited financially. We also had many cake and candy sales. The Christmas Ball was given by the student body and the sophomores participated along with the other classes. The after game dances were fun and contributed greatly to our funds. A spring dance is also on the calendar for the sophomores. We sponsored a serial movie at noon and also had noon dances. 'Ve gave an assembly in which every sophomore participated. We are proud of those of us who have achieved special recognition in the sophomore class: the cheerleaders, and editor of the pirate were chosen from the sophomore class. We are especially proud of all the boys that participated in athletics. We are looking forward to next year as upperclassmen. 19 BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right; Virginia Wolstenholm, Janice Zettler, Ann Hoskins. Cherry Iverson. Sharron Cooper, Jen Humphrey, Sandra Petersen. Credit man We, the Freshman Class of 57 58, walked through the sacred halls of P.A.U.H.S. on the morning of September 11, 1957. We were, to put it mildly, frightened, but we soon found that we had nothing to fear. Instead of the initiation we expected we were received with open arms and a Freshman Reception. This year we have given a dance, a cake sale, and have sold magazines. We plan on giving a Freshman Talent Revue and more dances, etc. 22 Left to Right: Gary Nissen, treasurer; Joni Iversen, secretary; Gene Bowman, president; Gordon Crispin, vice-president. They won the Sectional Parliamentary Procedure Contest. This year, as in the past, they took part in the judging contests at Davis and Cal Poly. Their projects have included a fish and rifle derby, Junior Logging Conference, Parent and Son Banquet, Donkey Basketball, and the planting of fifteen hundred Christmas trees. The officers, before the year was over, began planning for the next year, in- tending to continue following their motto; “Learning By Doing 33 «• Reason 5 Sia ummary On September 21, the Point Arena Pirates’ football team journeyed to Mendocino for a practice game. The first half of the game saw some tough defen- sive play and neither team scored. In the second half the determined Pirates got in the scoring column on a pass from Matt Piper to Russ Caughey and a con- version by Gene Bowman. This was followed by a safety by Lester Ball. Chuck York cinched the game by inter- cepting a Mendo pass and returning it for a touchdown. It wasn’t until the last quar- ter that Mendo could score and the final ' score was 15-7. On September 28. Boonville defeated Point Arena in a thriller that saw Matt Piper score 18 points and that wasn't won until the last seconds of the ball game. The final score was 26-20. On October 5, the Pirates went to Covelo where they took to the air and racked up an easy win over the surprised Covelo team. Matt Piper completed 7 of 8 passes and scored two touchdowns. Dennis Osland came through with two touchdowns and Gene Bowman went in for one 6 pointer. Covelo was unable to score until the last seconds of the game. Final score 36 to 7. On October 12, Mendocino came to Point Arena for revenge but went home with a 40-2 defeat ever inough PA's second string was in the second half. Gordon, Dennis, Matt, and Clinton all made touch- downs. On October 19, Upper Lake forfeited to PA because of the flu and because they couldn’t find another open date. On October 26, the Pirates met Legget Valley on their home field and could do no wrong. The first string ran up a huge lead in the first half and an inspired second string continued to pile up points through- out the second half. Tony Choate, Virgil Swift, and Gary Phelps all showed promise of being real helps to the football team next year as well as this year. Gordon Crispin, Gary Phelps, Dennis Osland, Matt Piper, Clinton Reynolds, and Gene Bowman all scored one or more touchdown On November 2, the Pirates met Laytonville at Willits and despite the fact that the flu-bug had latched on to several players the Pirates showed their usual good team play. Sam Oglesby and Lester Ball starred on defense while Gary Phelps, Matt Piper and Clinton Reynolds accounted for 36 points. The final score was 36-6 and it was a sick but happy team that re- turned to Point Arena that night. On November 9, the Pirates, battle weary from their triumph over the flu-bug, journeyed to Lower Lake where they really put their hearts into the game but were un- able to come up with a victory. Their tactics included two on-side kicks by Gene Bowman. Matt Piper scored three touch- downs and passed to Gordon Crispin for the fourth. The final score was 40-24. This was the last game that Lester Ball, Gary Nissen, Gordon Crispir and Gene Bowman, would ever play for good old Point Arena High. But they leave behind them a flock of good players who will do a real good job for the blue and gold next year. All in all this was a very successful year for the football team. They tied for second place with a 6 and 2 record.
