First of all come senior rings. Nothing in lite is more important to a senior than the right class ring. The class yearbook gets underway, a whole story in itself. Rehearsals begin for the senior play. The year's end approaches in a mad, happy merry- go-round with the senior ball, publication of the annual and at last grand and glorious Sneak Day. At last commencement comes. The young people graduate in that blissful, roseate mood that only o graduating class can achieve. Remember the way we all gasped as Reed made that last basket to cinch the game for Poky. We even cried when Poky bowed to Nampa to share the Big Six. Dancing at the Junior Prom was wonderful, The soft lights and music, the decorations-everything was per- fect. Although the class party went to the other extreme of Turkey in the Straw and hay, it was fun, too. We really drank the coke that night. We stood and applauded as the final curtain fell on the junior assembly. With trembling knees and shaking voices, some of us graduated into the Junior Speech Bureau. Yes, we, the juniors, have really had fun this year in adding to the great spirit and sporstmanship always shown by Poky High. eg- R. INGARD NEILSON l-lead of the Music C 0 S Department. 4 . J' ' , Qi I ' Q. I f adam Music for all-opportunity for the talented. Our high school musicians in orchestra and bands do their share in making America musical. Although to the average person a band is still associated with park concerts and lemonade, oompahs and The Stars and Stripes Forever, the students of Poky recognize the New Look in their bands. Under the captaincy of Delmar Vail, they play more difficult material all the time and are a real credit to Mr. Neilson in his first year at Poky. There is plenty of swing and showmanship in our First Band's routines. Led by our comely majorette Csee coverl, Joyce Cousins, they can switch from a high-swinging march stride to a ofinch shuffle without a break. They sparkle at games and help to increase our school loyalty. fYah, we said it before, that's our theme this yearl The Concert Band under the sponsorship of Mr. Fawson had that wonderful trip to Sun Valley in August. Shall we ever forget it? The Pep Band, too, has had good times and has made many snappy appearances. lt's big date on the school calendar covered the regular basketball season and nearly all the month of March when the tournaments were in full swing. Von Atkinson made the Pep Band as good as a floor show. As Timotheus played on the emotions of Alexander the Great, so do our musical organ- izations influence our feelings and our enthusiasms. All in all, what would we do without music? Only success can came to four girls who harmonize as well as the violin quartet Jule Hawkes Joyce Dotson Bonnie Lish and Isobel Yearsley, Trumpet Trio three boys who could make any maestro stand up and take notice. These dances were a very important part of school activities this year. The school government answered the demands of the student body and granted a greater number of informal dances than ever before. The social committee, under Miss Tucker's supervision, spread dates for the dances all over the calendar, and students turned out in large numbers. The freedom which is often missed at formal dances because of their nature was exhibited in all its glory at these affairs. Students danced to their hearts' content and to their own personal enjoyment. The policy of holding frequent informal dances will probably remain a perm- anent part of school life. The Boys' Council Mixer, the first dance of the year and semi-formal, is traditionally given at the close of Red and Blue Day. This year, however, the dance had to be gl? postponed because the gym floor was being refinished. ? Two weeks later when the dance was given it was the 5 usual success that the Mixer dances are, and the stu- fx ilifdlllg M dents' enjoyment of it did not suffer at all for its being delayed, And one advantage was that everyone was not v 4' .1 worn out from the activities of Red and Blue Day, and f I they really could enjoy themselves. ,ul K 4' U f Si -2 re TW? Switching convention around, the girls invited the boys to this dance, called for them, and took them to their homes afterwards. This dance was held in the gym, which had been gayly decorated by the members of Girls' Council advised by Miss Kingsley, to represent a gypsy tent. Using brightly colored streamers, they had draped them from the center to the sides of the gym and hung a large orange ball in the center of the tent . As one of the busiest Thespian organi- zations in several years, the l947-48 Poky High Thespian group entered a float in the Red and Blue Day parade and were able to tie for third place with it, they also spent a good many hours in the foyer of the gym during the Regional Basketball Tournament selling programs. How- ever, their pursuit of the drama did not want for all these extra activities. With the help of Mrs. Whitlow, their adviser, they presented a play at Christmas time and put on a highly entertaining assembly. Such services as working on the make- up for the operetta and the senior and all-school plays was also performed by the Thespian mem- bers. Officers were Barbara Ann Rasmusson, president, Ford Paulsen, vice-president, Grace Deveraux, secretary, and Rita Hartland and Norma McLeod, treasurer. , The school had a M64 ' ' ' new ruling this year, that every student who wished to participate in the all-school play or the senior play, the two major dramatic productions of the school year, must have participated in the production of a one-act play, Therefore, a large number of one- act plays were sponsored by the Curtain Club This is the sooh-frosh dramatic club of the school, from it Poky High gets its best Thespians Having presented one of the best assemblies of the year, Curtain Club and Mrs, Hurley, their adviser, have sought to improve the dramatic abilities of the students and to develop an interest in the field of dramatics by the entire student body. The officers: president, Fred Nelson, vice- president, Helen Stowell, secretary, July Green, treasurer, Raymond Allen. ll25l One of the newer of wnma ' ' Poky High's club groups is the Camera Club, Organized last year, it has come into its own this year as a very busy and active club. Since a camera enthusiast is a special type of human being, Mr. Stauber, the Camera Club adviser, has had to deal with the students of this organization in a special way. He has done a fine job by helping them to plan picture-taking field trips on which the practical experience gained in the use of the camera was an invaluable aid in their study of photography. The students' interest has also been kept at a pitch by a contest in the club for the best snap- shots. The group hopes to be able to acquire a dark room for the school. The officers were Bob Dudley, president, .lack Bonner, vice-president, and Cleva Gray, secretary-treasurer. of ,iff , , , Hotdogsl Candy? Coke? You surely remember hearing that cry at the football games, Well, it was given by a member of Chamber of Com- merce lll. This club had the concessions for all of the football games and since the games were held in the Spud Bowl a transportation problem had to be solved. However, this didn't daunt their spirit, for when the basketball season rolled around, they acquired the job of selling pro- grams at the state tournament, Mrs. Bolscheid, adviser, thought the group had accomplished many worth-while things during the year, but the organization added one more by presenting an entertaining assembly before drawing the year's activities to a close. They also furnished the typing and other commercial awards which were presented at the end of the year. Their interests and efforts were challenged by a contest of mak- ing and selling pom-poms for the football games in the fall. Then they adopted a foreign home- economics class as a welfare project. They cor- respond with the foreign girls and send them supplies. Miss Dana, their adviser, was able to demonstrate the proficiency of these Future Homemakers of America when the faculty were guests at a Silver Tea which the girls gave for them. ln February the school was honored to have the district F. Among their many activities this year was the testing of milk for farmers as a commun- ity service, and a public speaking contest in the ag. classes. They also raffled off a fat steer and sold some record books to raise funds for the earnings and savings committee. Practice in conducting meetings has been offered. Scholar- ship was encouraged by a letter of award. As their recreation, they had a combined banquet with the F. H. A. in December. They had a Father and Son Banquet, too. Most of the student body had previously thought that any members ofa science club must be very solemn people, but by the time Eddie had finished amusing them, their ideas were changed. But the club had some serious meetings this year, too, at which they had an electroplating demonstration, and a Tesla Coil demonstration on electric currents. They have also visited l. Though art 74753 ' ' ' is applied to every study that is concerned with man's appre- ciation of the beautiful, no field of study could be more deserving of the name than that which deals with the beauties upon which man gazes. In an effort to advance interest and development in this direction Poky l-ligh's Arts and Crafts Club has been working overtime this year. Taking up textile painting, learning how to create cor- sages, composing original greeting cards, and sketching from life were only a few of the things which they did at their meetings, All the scenery in the operetta was designed and painted by the members of this club. At one of their meetings this year, they entertained a Mexican singer who returned the compliment by singing Mexican songs for them. ln their study of Spanish, that language of ro- mance, the club members subscribed to a Mex- ican magazine called Norte An effort to ap- preciate the foods of our Southern neighbors was climaxed by an enchalada dinner, Mr. Walton, the club adviser, also told us that at their meet- ings the club often heard records of Spanish songs and conversations conducted in Spanish Heber Hansen, president, Beverly Forrest, vice- president, Jeanne Barrow, secretary, Sharon Ann Kearsley, treasurer. made W ' ' l A new club came into being this year in Poky High. A group of students interested in the ad- vancement of visual education in the school or- ganized the Movie Club. Since December when the club was started, it has given the students of Poky High movies which were more efficiently run, and it has had the movie room renovated. The members have run two pictures for the school and have big plans for continuing the work of their club next year. Jack Worth, Rachel Gallo- way, Armond Glick, and Peggy Martz drew up the constitution and asked Mr. Brown to be their adviser.
