To complete the physical education program there are rooms f fencing, boxing, and a shooting range. Between the gymnasium and the auditorium is a large modern- istic foyer. Composed of a group of ca- pable soloists, they blend beauty with harmony. They are Barbara Brian, Leola Olsen, Florence Grave- line, Julia Kirkman, Mary Louise Tandy, Pauline Spahr and the pian- ist, Faye Lemmon. CLARINET DU ET Two musical - minded students, Ray Cavdnaugh and Richard Bar- rett make up the clarinet duet. They are very expert musicians, having been in the bond and the orchestra since they entered hiah school. As a duet, they supply pleasant listening for the audience. Q.-I sovs' QUARTET Singing everything from Down by the Old Mill Stream in good barber shop quartet fashion to the modern swing numbers, the boys' quartet has been one of the most popular of the small music groups. Sometimes with accompaniment, sometimes without, their blending of tones is mast pleasing. They like to harmonize numbers to their own arrangement, Lionel Jensen lstandingi, Newell Ferer, John Skondros and Harlan Fereday are the four fellows who make up this novel quartet. When they all gather around the piano singing to Newell's accompani- ment, one feels that they are enjoying it as much as their listeners. Often asked to sing at public gatherings, they have become very experi- enced and veteran singers. FLUTE TRIO Fora differentsensation in music, listen tothe flute trio. Three girls4lris Waid, Mary Alice Swan- son and Delores York-give de- lightful interpretations on their instruments. The ensemble has a mellowness and h a r m o n y very 1, soothing to a listener. Page Fifty Two TRUMPET TRIO With heads up and trumpets held hugh, the trurripeters three send forth a silyer blast. The th r c e--LaVon Birrell, Bill l-larten and Dale Barrett are musicians with real class and polish. They step out on the stage ond snap their cornets to their lips with the same teamwork with which they plciy, They are perennial fo yorites with the students as soloists ir1tl1C band, VIOLIN QUARTET The four violinists, David Wray, Ray Talman, Bob Shaw and Jack Cronise, Combine their musical abilities to fornw a melodious quartet. They all practice pri' yately and play in the orchestra Besides their private training, they practice many hours together. l-lard work and loriq hours are offset by their success in public per- formances and before the stuilents in the Friday assemblies. The violin is a hard instrument to master but these four are masters, all. XYLOPHONE TRIO Pretty girls and pretty music shoulrl lie the title ofthe Xylophone trio. Two sisters, Merle Lowe and Jeanne Lowe, with .lean Brown are the three girls who play these noyel instruments. They are real artists with their music and play with ease anfl poise, sometimes manipulating os many as four hammers at one time. With hands moving amazingly fast and music lust as rapid, they are always 0 hit with the audience. SAXOPHONE QUARTET With soxophones crooning like Bing Crosby, the Sax quartet conveys a feel- ing of rest and quiet to the audience. The players--Bill l-lawkley, Roy Cava- nough, Elmo Smith ond Gene Burton--are four fellows who can always be found in the music department. Aside from their excellent auartct they are in y ei r i o u s dance bands, Orchestras nncl marching bands. lf they keep playina as they hoye, they will each be bound for a big clnnce band. --51 I Orch es tra The Pocatello Hugh School us very proud of uts symphony orchestra thus year The orchestra IS one of the largest snr to ccnuc from the musuc department of the hlgh School It us under the excellent durectuon of H LeGrande ruvsson HL has created new cnthusuesm and uruterest among the musuc students The success of the operetta Swccthcarts can be partly creduted to the orchestra accompanust Furst Row Dona Waters concert master Sygl Marks Ruth St Marte Gcralctune Balley Gwyenth Stocks Betty Chester Earl Rouche Flore ce Klng Bonnue Ruggs Second Row lleftl Antonuo CmfT1OSl'I'I Robert Shaw Kathryn Barber Muyo Yamada Second Row rughtl Carolyn Gregg Suzzanne Goss r Davua Wray Thnrd Row tleftl Aluce Lundaren Earnest Carranza Thurd Row rughtu Lous Crlsswell Joy South Evelyn Delzcr Fourth Row Jack Cranuse Ray Tolman Kelth Albano Ralph R at Slaughter Dale Barrett LaVon Burrell Thomas Kamp blll l-larten Don Clark Donald Fullrner Robert Yarcllex Charles Roscoe Dorothy Swanson Ray Cavanauah Gayle Sorenson Ir s Wald Rula Merle Jones Rhoda Vaun Call Jeart Brown Merle Lowe Dorothy Marley Sfandung H L Fawson conductor Clarence Shankel Bob Thomas Wulluam Thomas TRUMPET TRIO These boys have a future' Thus has been proved many tumes by theur appearance on varu ous ossemblues and programs presented by the musuc department They can really make sweet musuc from a trumpet PEP BAND If ut s good loud musuc, thats needed the Pep Band us ummeduately called upon to help at basketball games football games and pep as semblues they re rught un there beatung ut out They are frequently seen rudung about the streets on the end of Muke Yamada s truck adver tusurug Pocatello Hugh School or lust havung a good tume Bull Horten student dlrector has shown unusual talent wuth thus group of musu clans lf there us any duffuculty Prof Fawson can always be counted on to help them out ui .r .ul Frrsf Row Bull Hawkley Darwun Cook Ralph Ruce Keuth Albano Hudoshu Yamada Orland Garrutson Ken Akers Elmo Smuth Gerald Douglas Second Row Alvun Putnam Donald Fullmer Edwun Kahn Joe Truuullo Thomas Kump LaVon Burrell Jay Slaughter Dale Barrett, Luke Shura Murray Green Thurd Row Donald Slark Ray Cavanaugh Duck Clark Oren Loveland Charles Roscoe Gene Burton, Robert Yardley Leader Bull arten Page Fufty Four N f t x Y I P 4 -N I u 1 x 's ' 3 P I I u ' ,- ui ' . f . g K l ,f u c ' u ' ,W ' , , ure, J , T , , , , u l u u ' Bull McCurdy, Cecelua Delay, - 11 . ,l . 1 - 1 1 1 ' 5' . 1 . . 11 . . 1, , . uf - 1, 1 A 1 u - - - . 11 1, ' 1 . f 'rf f f . 3 .1 'fu' r 1 1 - 1 r A 1 1 lmportant vocal tralmng tor huah school students mcy be acqulred nn advanced and preparatory cnorosei Tne aclyanccd chorts s the suxth hour class whlch Mr Fowson trams dolly It matnly comoosc thc A Cap ocllo chotr whtch tn :ts black robes IS an tmpressuve stqht The chotr IS a flntshed musical product and ore scnts thc Chrustmas pageant each year N085 Back Row Mcrvull Egan Lcmmon Craft Knrkrnan Cleare Gcthe Pcterson Skannro Orchar Rcncr Rogers Calph Ersro xelsrn Mulls Eskelson lohnsnr- Mad: on arlett Rtno E yes Mrlsant Second Row tumor neon errta Mc-rrll mlth e oar' e cs utn m s tt Etel Chr stcn o D ls onm an anry 'ear owny nr L sow an c a If ow ter Bri n vfne Olsen Hnllnard Slaughter Akers Garrlson lensen Ellsworth Fc-rer Vxoodard Fereday Lewts Knowles Corrcn Sat lame' Jensen Allred PREPARATORY CHORUS FITS' Row lett to rlghtl Calauanru Ferc nay Craven Haley Rogers Kump Jensen Curtns Western Recldnck Smuth Bfrgclen dorf Howells Kauffman Hollaclay Ames Ellls Smnth Rogers Second Row Espnallrer Curtxs Harrrson Rhodes Anderson Tallas Carrtson Bertasso Lemmon Halslup Cooper Martnn Luker Third Row Olnver Rotnznson Curran Gxlyeat Ames Lundsey Mers Jen sen Garbett Hughy Frandsen Bueh'er Mules Davls Olson Rnrks Krebs Fourth Row Johnson Mnllward L nfl Mort n Meyers Rorcrts Kamaaoe Jones Bertasso Akey 'oncg Howell Bagley Bosauct Guy man Cleare Jensen Cutler Kaneko Flffh Row Armstead Peake Haussler Johnson Simms Dudley Archrbalcl Metlen Man ter Slxfh Row Lnndsey Lewus Snow Lowe Brown Lowe Franrls Kohn Smv h Danucl Chrlstotteso Anderson Armstrona Stand mg Fawson DANCE ORCH ESTRA A all soclaltunctuonsheld In e school the dance orchestra supplres the music All of them are members ot the school band who are very tnterested tn mustc The seven man band conststs of Bull Thomas plana Jack Clnne Bull l-'lar ten LaVon Btrell Harold Ltllubrudge Gene Burton and Charles Roscoe The band can really Swma Out plays at a great many dances outsrde of school With sts goal the C o c o a n u t Grove they practrce dnllgently Page Fifty Faye ' B 1 x T igi,f::l C0114 ' Ra C , 1 I S T V I, 1 s rt Uv Th Ls T . , 7 X I 7 V t , f I 1 rl t Howell, Peterson, Ruley, Stafford, Colllns, A - I , I , lu A I , 1 , T T l f 1 .
