FOOTBALL The l956 Football season began the work of Coaches Flanagar and Zoda as ath letlc mentors at Pocahontas Hlgh It didn't take them long to get acquainted w1tn eve yone about one half hourl, and football practice started off with gre t en thuswasm on Qeptember l We nov skip two weeks of grunts and groans as the aspiring Qand perspiringl Red Granges take their callsthenics and dummy tackling September ll Pocahontas l3 Gilmore O The operlng game With Gilmore proved that the Indians had greatpmssibilities ir store for them The mud was ankle deep on tne field, making it tough for the baclfleld, but when the flnal vhlstle blew the Indians had waded through for tvo touchdowns The players' suits were so muddy toward the last that the spectators often couldn't tell WHICH team was WHICH, and even the pl yersthemselves sometimes wondered wdether they were t ckling an opposing player or the referee September lb Pocahontas l5 Gllmore O It was on a sunny autumn afternoon that the Indians played Laurens in the flr t Conference b ttle of the season Three times Pocahontas madelaurens dig in and b ttle on tHCiF goal line, and three times the Indians were freakishly kept from scoring Laurens was badly outclassed all the way, Pocahontas making ten first donxs vhile Lauren could manage only one October 9 Pocahontas 6 Lohrville O The StotiSt1CS of the Lohrville game can tel' you more about it than the actual score can Pocahontas made fourteen flrst downs Lohrvllle made one Poc ahontas made P6? yards from Scrimmage Lonrville made twenty eight The high spot oi LHS game was Pocahontas's hard hitt1ng backfield The game put the Irdlans ir the runnlng in the Twin Lakes Conference October 9 Pocahontas P6 Alta O It w s a determined bunch of Indians that took the field against Alta The line opened up holes as never before, and the backfieldforged through with smash es, passes, reverses, and laterals Alta was game, but to no avail Pocahontas October l6 Pocaz rt Lake City 7 No one n o thodght that tre gene with Lake City ould be anynmdsummerxught's e xu ll mash' lhey had beaten all the best teams in their vicinlty and were AIHHSTS ln the Coon Valley Conference While numerically lt was a defeat for Pocahontas, the moral victory was ours, since the team fought with that Udo or dlen attitude which makes a team a winner no matter how badly they are defeated October P5 Pocahontas 6 Rolfe 6 The homecoming game Cor should we say dog iightj with Rolfe was a battle from start to finish It was a conference battle, which added to the enthusiasm great affection was displayed between members of the opposing teams when the smoke finally cleared after the battle it was discovered that the score was tied and all the fightlng h d come to naught October SJ Pocahontas 14 Manson O The afternoon game at Manson was not so spectacular as far as passing and oper play was concerned, but vhat it lacked in trickery it made up for in brute force, w1th Pocahontas doing most of the forclng The Indians' line held so well that Manson scarcely made a first down, while the backfleld continuously pounded them for long gains November 6 Pocahontas ?7 Albert City 7 One of the highlights of the 1956 season was the defeat tHe Indians handed Albert City Albert City has always been known to have especially strong football teams But all tradition was upset, and Pocahonta literally swamped them with a barrage of passes and spectacular running plays November l5 Pocahontas 7 Rockwell City 19 Lady Luck completely deserted the Indians in the final game of the season a confererce controversy with Rockwell City Outgalned and outplayed in every quar ter, the Rockwell City contingent capitalized on breaks and came through forthree touchdowns as many as were scored on Pocahontas in all the rest of the games put together First downs Pocahontas eight, Rockwell City four Yards fromscrimmage Pocahontas 228, Rockwell City llO Season's record won ? tied 2 lo Three members of the l956 Football team received all conference honors C captalrs Travi and Sedlacek, and Elmer Blomberg Albert Sedlacek was alsogdven honorable mention for all state honors by Jack North 14 ' .
