This is the third annual ever published by the stu- dents of Poca High School. If in later years the Poca- talico shows improvement because others have profit- ed by our mistakes, we will rejoice in this as in every other step of progress in oiirschool. We are not with- out hope that this volume may serve some good and that it wil1 iii thedfuture bring' back those days in Igoca High School, which are so Qdear to us. 4 --. I ool h Sch Poca Hig three four SCHOOL HISTORY Poca District High School as it was formerly called began classes in September, 1923. The small white schoolhouse was located on a hillside between Bancroft and Black Betsy. The first graduating class consisted of eleven members. , The school emblem is an Indian riding upon a white horse. The em- blem was chosen because of the Indian Pocatalico, Who was killed at the mouth of Poca River. The high school which We now attend was built during the year of 1926. The school paper which was then known as The School Echo was first published in January, 1924. Three years later the first annual Poca- talico was published. The largest class to be graduated from Poca High School, was the class of 1948 with 62 members. Along with the graduates of 1950 there has been a total of 871 students graduated from Poca High School. Poca has also left its mark in the history of athletics. The football team of 1930 was undefeated. During the last twenty years there has been many strong and powerful teams, but none to reach this record. The basketball team won a golden cup during the season of 1940 for the run- ner up in the regional tournament. We must not forget dramatics while thinking of the past and present. There has been many smash-hit productions of plays, operettas and skits put upon the stage of Poca High School. 4 We will always remember the good times we have had while partici- pating in activities of this school. Because of the group of students George Washington Jr. Hi did send, The sophomore year was ended with an increase of ten. They struggled hard as juniors to reach that final goal, But the number decreased till there were seventy on the roll. As seniors they do wonder what will be their fate, Now there are fifty-seven which on May 18 graduate. Ferrari, Harrison, Withrow, and White now lead the class, As the officers they were elected by the mass. They have chosen for their flower the red rose, And most of the gals have received them from their beaus. We hope they remember their colors, blue and gold, Also the ideals to which they should hold. The motto Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead , Expresses their hope that they all succeed. twenty-one SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY This is the prophecy of the Class of Fifty The things they are doing we believe to be nifty. If you long to know of their deeds Just look ahead and see how this reads. Arno Arthur is a dignified man, He's back at Poca teaching the band. Tom Noffsinger has all the girls swooning, Around the world he's softly crooning. Donald Stone owns a farm and also a wife, He will be happy for the rest of his life. Sonny White is famous as he can be, ' He's playing pro football across the sea. James Painter is now in business, a wheel, using all his talents and all his skill. Morris Purdy now playing pro football is fine, The crowd cheers as he breaks through the line. Bill McClanahan is now married and calm, For his wife now has him under her palm. Gene Dotson is now sailing the sea, For the world he wishes to see. Carrol Hill now carries on his shoulder, a pitch-fork, A big time farmer who surely brings in the pork. Eddie Thomas as a salesman we must give a I hand, Because the way he does things certainly is grand. I heard Glendean Casto's happy eating pies, He sits in his house just living till he dies. Donald Harrison is having fun that's some- thin', All he does these days is rabbit huntin'. Harry Wolford is in quite a whirl, He's married a twin, now he has two baby girls. John Turnbull the man with the perfect physique, Is making trips to New York every week. twenty-two Tony Ferrari the idol of some girl's eye Is now the coach at old Poca Hi. Homer Parkins is now being showered with confetti. Because he has just been married to Loretti. John Criner is not doing bad, He's driving the school bus in place of his dad. Corbet Sigman always a studious guy, Is now teaching Chemistry at Charleston Hi. Curtiss Withrow can cure all your ills, He's now a doctor and passing out pills. Bob Hartley is surely doing fine, Instead of one florist shop he now owns nine. Curtiss Little isn't to be found, He's probably out some place roaming around. James Blake we must say is quite lucky, To have a job as a grease monkey. Bill Persinger is barely afloat, fDon't get us wrong-he works on a boatj. Bobbie Kelly has a job each December in Atlanta, QYou want to know what?J He's still play- ing Santa! Lewis Withrow has everyone in a whirl, No wonder, he's in Hollywood playing the part of a girl. Bertha McCormick never is gripeing, Because she is doing her favorite job, typing. Wanda McClanahan is an air hostess and fly- ing high, We hope she enjoys her job in the sky. A grand secretary is Bertha Stone, With her salary she'll never need a loan. Betty Letts patients will never need a hearse, Because she has the reputation of being a wonderful nurse. Faith Boggess is teaching the golden rule, Now that she's finished from Poca High School. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Rosey Gatens has a husband and no further to look, I believe she'll always keep him because she can cook. Ruby Scott who is now in Hollywood, Is playing Blondie for old Dagwood. They say that Drema Harrison, a tall slim girl in class, As a nurse she is kind to her patients, but will take none of their sass! Anna Belle with many boys is now seen, We wonder which will change her name from Greene. Mary refuses to have a spouse, I guess her name will always be House. Since Patsy has changed her name from Clary, She has her hands full taking care of Harry. Seems funny now that no boy phones, The reason's Carolyn is no longer a Jones. Ruth Cunningham now curls many heads a day, A big-time beautition is what they all say. Betty Sayre as a teacher each year grows quainter, Except when sheis singing The Old Master Painter . All things from her mind Maggie Simmons will disperse, Her only thoughts are to be a good nurse. Lou Eva Bailey is head nurse in a big city, She's left Poca-isn't that a pity. Rachel Ferguson as a secretary is a sensation, She looks at her faces even on vacation. Lucinda Gott to her patients is kind, She treats them tenderly but makes them mind. Lucy Peyton is fast on the way, She's almost a doctor and more happy each day. Sue Arthur and hubbie own a J ot-em Down Store, They rake and scrape to make one cent more. Alberta Becker is now a school teacher we hear, But since she's nice her students have no fear. Betty Thomas is a grand secretary so thinks her boss, And to lose her would be a great loss. Virginia Cobb must have the know how, To be the nurse that she is now. Dorothy Cochran is now happy and merry, Because she is now a good secretary. Reba Kessel now has a job for life, Since she's become a fine housewife. Jeanne Holstein as a secretary her boss doesn't rob, Because she is doing such a good job. Bernice Rayburn now has a little Oakes, ' Who to eat his cereal she must coax. Donna Knapp on little boys is using her charm, Since she has become an old school marm. When Eva McClanahan's kids play hookey, She has to resort to help from Cookie. Food for her Milhoans Haney Staley must hoard, So she drives them home in hubbies, new Ford. Jean Whittington no longer must implore, Because she now has flowers galore. Robert Gibbs with the gal's was a panic, Now he has a job as a Class-A-Mechanic. twenty-three Last Wlll and Testament The following is the last will and testament of those dear departed souls, the Seniors of 1950. The second year rolled around and the sophomores found they had lost several classmates but gained a few from George Washington Junior High. Now we come to the grand and glorious year of 1950. The little green freshmen of 1947 are now Jolly Juniors. Seventy-five lucky students are now member of the Jun- ior Class. When the Junior Class had a class meet- ing at the beginning of school, Roderick Davis was elected president, Dorothy Smith, secre- tary, and Noel Anthony, treasurer. They chose as their flower the white rose, and for their colors, blue and white. The motto is Ever Onward . On March 24, the class presented a play entitled Mamma's Baby Boy which was a great success. twenty-nine - Sophomore Class I MISS ADKINS HOMEROOM 3 Flfst POW! Sybil W9Stfall, l-100113 VVltl1Y0W. Man-made rayon can be engineered for all seasons. Manufacturers and cooperating Avisco textile experts long ago adapted it to fit the open-weave construction of crisp summer suiting. Now they have developed an entirely new type of year-round suitings -some 10095 rayon and others in blends of rayon and wool. Whatever the season, you can expect smartly styled pattems, subtle gradations in color..,a wonderfully s w i all the year 'rouncll springy feel heretofore available only in the most ex- pensive fabrics. Being predominantly rayon, they are snubbed by moths. Being wrinkle-resistant, they keep that fresh-pressed look longer. Remember, there has never been anything before like these distinguished fabrics, Fall and winter suits made from them are in stock at modern-minded shops right now.
