Chess 8t Bowlin ,Wiiw w, i, , This year, the Chess Club met every Tuesday afternoon under the direction of Mr. Staub. The chess team, itself, was comprised of the clubis five best players: seniors, Larry Fleming and Richard Gang- wisch, who played first and sec- ond boards, and three sopho- mores. Morgan Conrad, the most outstanding underclass- man, played third board. The team competed with other schools in the North Sub- urban League on Friday after- noons and managed to build quite a name for themselves in competition. Hess. During the sixth year, under Mr. Sparanois sponsor- ship, the Bowling Club continued to present a great way to spend one after- noon a week. A high score was no longer a requirement this year, because the Bowling Club was mainly an enjoyable pasttime, which helped fill the activi- ty lull between the fall and winter sports seasons. Ski Club The Ski Club under President Rhonee Fried is pres- ently becoming the most popular club in P-W. It is a unique club because it concentrates on the individual, rather than a select few. Novice skiers have no reason to be embarrassed due to limited skiing knowledge. Under the leadership of their sponsors, Mr. Bieler, Mr. Weyl, Mrs. Sayare, and Miss Ekberg, the club has adopted a motto: uWe just don,t ignore the beginners, we try to help them W The club through a lot of work raised money for their trips. Fencing Fencing is not the most popular sport here at P-W, but approximate- ly 20 girls have learned and are mas- tering the fundamentals of fencing, and find it quite exciting. The se- niors have been fencing now for three years and are quite good, while the sophomores and juniors are progress- ing rapidly. Once again, under the direction of Mrs. Pavlak, P-W,s fencers met ev- ery Monday to perfect their skills. The clubts goals are to teach fencing and to have members fence competi- tively. The group traveled to the University of Pennsylvania to attend fencing matches and hopes to have some of the girls competing in matches in the near future. Doran, Assistant CoachJ This year the growth of the wrestling squad reflected the growth that has taken place in the field of wrestling since it has been becoming a popular sport throughout the past few years. Wrestling is an exciting sport and, as Mr. Joe said, it encompasses speed, skill, and strength. More and more people were finding this out, as the crowds at the meets kept becoming larger. At the start of the season, the Colonial grapplers were picked as one of the favorites for the League Championship; but due to untimely injuries and sickness to key matmen, and other such problems, the team did not - realize it,s goal. Nonetheless, P-W was highly respected in the League Wl'eStllng thanks to the skill of our top wrestlers like Bill Racich, who finished with one of the best wrestling records this school has produced, Dennis Fonte, and Chuck Leonard. Next year promises to be even better, since the majority of this yearis team was composed of sophomores and juniors.
