Panther Soccer - 1978 The 1978 PSC Soccer Team started out the season in line style, playing 8 games in the Tropics against the best teams in Bermuda, and winning all but one game. The Panthers proved to be unbeatable during their 1978 season and they set national records for least goals allowed in a season (3) and most shut-outs (14). This was made possible by the incredible defense of the “Green Shield including Pete (“The Cat”) Simonini in goal; Dave Cady, fullback; Tri-Captains Kevin Rice. Steve Bean, and Duke Diaz, also fullbacks. f£n route to winning their 3rd N.E.S.C.A.C Championships in 4 years. Coach Gcrd Luttcr was awarded his 100th victory at P.S.C. The coaching talents of Gerd 1.utter has justifyingly earned him this victory as well as the title: “Wizard of Soccer”. In addition, the ultra-skilled plays of halfbacks Adolph (“The Rock ) Adrukonis; Mike Crow, and Billy MacLcan helped the Panthers gain a bid to the NCAA Division III play-offs for the 4th time in 5 years. Forwards such as super-fast Mark F.rb. Glenn Riley. Lew Simmons, and Cris Desjardins put some spice into the Plymouth State attack. Only a few adjustments need to be made in order to keep the Panthers a leading New F.ngland soccer team. The 4 graduates of this years club will indeed be difficult to replace—four year starter and conference player Adolph Andrukonis, along with captains Duke Diaz and Kevin Rice, and defender Gary Brayton. These graduating senors will certainly by missed, but look for many more years of great soccer at Plymouth.

Finish 4-3-4 Playing a 4-2-3-1 formation, the attacking punch came from junior Shirley Morgan, sophomores Judy Curley, Diane Luciano, Andy Pitts, Janice Burke, Denise Hawkins, and Freshman Linda Ralph: as the season progressed, this punch became stronger and surer, and coordinated play that was lacking in early fall resulted in a very excited, successful end of the season. The J.V. squad, led by captain Romainc Randall, finished the season with just one loss, that being to powerful U. Mass. A very strong and enthusiastic squad of freshmen and sophomores promises some exciting seasons in the near future.
