Editor-In-Chief: Susan M. Soule Introduction r memories. With this Dedication Stanton (“Peter”) C. Otis. Jr. is our director of Career Counseling and Placement services. He provides continuing assistance to students and alumni making occupational transitions. He also coordinates freshman orientation and is the American College Testing Program Supervisor. This is what the catalogue says about Peter Otis and his official position at Plymouth State College. It is because he DOES so much more and IS so much more that the senior class has proudly dedicated their 1979 Conning Tower yearbook to him. Peter is an understanding and warm person who is more than willing to offer his ideas and suggestions and informational services to the students who come to him with their questions and career problems. Only such a compassionate and well-informed man as Peter Otis could be so truly helpful to those of us faced with difficult career decisions. Peter's open-mindedness and invaluable assistance are always available to us - his door is always open. His true dedication to the students of Plymouth State College and his meaningful interactions with them have justifiably earned him the award of yearbook dedication. 5 Femi Goes No Spirit c Bur Carter and Begin meet ft nuclear energy. With only three players starting the season with more than one year of varsity experience, the Panther women evolved into an experienced, well coordinated team. Its defensive unit, led by tri-captains Barb Dattoli, Kathy Flanders, and Meg Pickett along with junior Denise Rioux and sophomore Kathy Duffy, developed into one of the strongest defensive teams PSC has seen in recent years. Finish 4-3-4 Playing a 4-2-3-1 formation, the attacking punch came from junior Shirley Morgan, sophomores Judy Curley, Diane Luciano, Andy Pitts, Janice Burke, Denise Hawkins, and Freshman Linda Ralph: as the season progressed, this punch became stronger and surer, and coordinated play that was lacking in early fall resulted in a very excited, successful end of the season. The J.V. squad, led by captain Romainc Randall, finished the season with just one loss, that being to powerful U. Mass. A very strong and enthusiastic squad of freshmen and sophomores promises some exciting seasons in the near future. Panther Soccer - 1978 The 1978 PSC Soccer Team started out the season in line style, playing 8 games in the Tropics against the best teams in Bermuda, and winning all but one game. The Panthers proved to be unbeatable during their 1978 season and they set national records for least goals allowed in a season (3) and most shut-outs (14). This was made possible by the incredible defense of the “Green Shield including Pete (“The Cat”) Simonini in goal; Dave Cady, fullback; Tri-Captains Kevin Rice. Steve Bean, and Duke Diaz, also fullbacks. f£n route to winning their 3rd N.E.S.C.A.C Championships in 4 years. Coach Gcrd Luttcr was awarded his 100th victory at P.S.C. The coaching talents of Gerd 1.utter has justifyingly earned him this victory as well as the title: “Wizard of Soccer”. In addition, the ultra-skilled plays of halfbacks Adolph (“The Rock ) Adrukonis; Mike Crow, and Billy MacLcan helped the Panthers gain a bid to the NCAA Division III play-offs for the 4th time in 5 years. Forwards such as super-fast Mark F.rb. Glenn Riley. Lew Simmons, and Cris Desjardins put some spice into the Plymouth State attack. Only a few adjustments need to be made in order to keep the Panthers a leading New F.ngland soccer team. The 4 graduates of this years club will indeed be difficult to replace—four year starter and conference player Adolph Andrukonis, along with captains Duke Diaz and Kevin Rice, and defender Gary Brayton. These graduating senors will certainly by missed, but look for many more years of great soccer at Plymouth. 1st Varsity Team A Success 1978 WOMEN’S SOCCER PSC 4 Castlcton State 3 PSC 0 Lyndon State 2 PSC 1 Bowdoin 0 PSC 0 Dartmouth 2 PSC 1 Vermont 2 PSC 4 Keene 1 PSC 0 Brown 1 FINAL RECORD Won 3 Lost 4 Tied 0 Women's soccer is making great strides throughout the country, and the women's team at PSC is no exception. Last year, in their first year as a varsity team, the women hooters came away with a fine 3-4 record that was in no way indicative of the way they played. . Twice, the Lady Panthers lost by a single goal in overtime, once to UVM and once to powerful Brown University. Tisa Kenney did a superb job in the goal as she kept the panthers close in all of their games. Despite the facl that only two of the women had played soccer before coming to Plymouth, the team showed a great deal of improvement during the season. They will soon establish themselves as a power to be reckoned with in soccer. 16 Cross Country Team P.S.C.’S outstanding cross country team enjoyed another successful year in 1978. The team, tri-captained by Mike Clark. Jim Clark and Russ Cutting saw strong contributions from Dave Bullrick, Art Demers. Rick and Ron Fullerton. Kenn Parker. Bill Ciookrich. Randy Miller, Dave DeSilva and Bruce Piispanan as well as all three captains. The future looks good for continuing P.S.C. brilliance in Cross Country as many members will be returning next year. Rick Fullerton was named “Most Improved in 1978, moving from twelfth place to sixth in the line-up. Rookie of the Year honors went to freshman Art Demers. Coach Rick Hutchins has much to be proud of in his first year of leading the cross country team. 18 The 1978 season was high-lighted by the superb running of senior Jim Clark, who closed out one of the most successful running careers in P.S.C. history. Jim represented Plymouth well during his four years, winning many races, including two first place finishes in the prestigious Plymouth Invitational, and twice being selected P.S.C. athlete of the week. This season Jim broke several course records and was selected as the first recipient of the John C. Foley Crosscountry award. Plymouth Norsemen Rugby Club Since the formation of the rugby club three years ago, participation and speculation of the game has greatly increased. The Norsemen faced a challenging season, playing highly competitive clubs as U.N.H, U-Mass, U-Mainc, Quincy, Norwich, and Dover. We appreciate those who supported us in the past and welcome anyone interested in having a good time to join the Rugby Football Club. The 1978 edition of the women's varsity tennis team fared very well indeed, taking into consideration the competition they had to face. The Panther net women finished 4-5 on the season and had some highly impressive performances from some talented returning veterans as well as some up-and-coming stars. Coach Janet Nell’s top three singles players, all just sophomores and competing in 23 matches between them, finished with a combined record of 10-13. a fine achievement for the young women. They were Cheryl Najarian. Gayle MacLcnnan. and Nancy Cote. They all will be back for much more before their PSC careers come to an end. 20 On the other hand. Coach Nell’s top two doubles teams finished with a remarkable 12-4 record on the season. The number one doubles team of junior. Deb Hughes, and freshman. Kathy Davidson, went undefeated (7-0) in matches and had a .683 percentage of games won. The number two duo of junior, Andrea Prudhomme, and sophomore, Lisa Shepard, finished 5-4 in matches and had a .517 percentage of games won. With all the top Panther women returning next fall, the prospects for 1979 can only be bright ones. Led by captain Kathy Chatficld, a junior guard from Manchester, the Panthcrwomcn finished the season over .500 for the first time in recent memory. Some fine wins characterized the Panthers’ surge to a winning season, none finer than their home court victory over rival Keene State, a team the Panthers had little success with until this past season. Contributing heavily to the team’s success in ’78-'79 were people like Debbie Hughes, a three year veteran who for the third straight season led the Panthers in scoring and rebounds; freshman Josce Pothier, a hustling guard who made life miserable for enemy ball carriers; and some highly improved sophomores like lilisc Duckett, who finished second in scoring behind Hughes; Pat Fraser, a sharpshooting forward; and junior Heidi Brown, who stepped into a starting role and did a fine job for the team. With the entire squad returning with the exception of senior Vicki Parady, prospects for next season can only be bright ones. 70 BARKER AND STAPLES SHINE The Plymouth State College Wrestling Panthers set several new individual and team records The team posted a great 14-7 record which is more victories than any previous year. Panther fans witnessed first time victories ever over Brown University. Boston College. VI I T,, and the University of Mainc-Orono. A key feature of this years team was the outstanding performance by several individuals The Panthers finished the season with three undefeated wrestlers which is another first. Bruce Gabriel (150 lb.) missed several matches due to injury but he still finished with an unblemished 15-0 record The second semester saw the addition of George Butch l ord, Jr (158 lb.) who finished with an undefeated record of 10-0, lie pulled off several key upsets and was a key factor in the success of the second semester. The third undefeated Panther was senior co-captain Charlie Barker (177 lb.). Charlie set two new records. He has won more regular season matches than any other wrestler and he has the longest undefeated record in a regular season His 19-0 record is a stunning accomplishment when you consider the fact that he defeated some of the best people in New England. Matt Staples (167 lb.) has had another incrcdiablc year as he broke his old regular season mark of 15-2 with a record of 18-3. Matt is one of the most successful wrestlers in New England, and has established new standards in the career wins department Malt Staples, has won more career matches than any other PSC Wrestler His record for four years: 51 w. 11 I. I tie. The team was helped by many fine efforts by other wrestlers as improvement was evident in many weight classes. The most difficult stumbling block confronting the Panthers was the loss of Tri-captain Kelvin Rowlctlc. Kelvin was looking very impressive and had an undefeated record when he dislocated his elbow in a match at Rhode Island College. The Panthers were involved in two major tournaments this year The team did not defend its nothern New England Title successfully, but finished second in the second annual tourney. The climax of the season came at the N.E. Intercollegiate Championships. The team had five wrestlers named to the All-New England Team and had their best finish ever. The team placed sixth and Malt Staples became the first N.E. Champion ever from Plymouth State. Bruce Gabriel had an outstanding tourney also as he finished second in the 150 lb. class. Charlie Barker (177 lb)-third. Bill Mitchell (unlimitcd)-fourth. and Dave Smith (190 lb) fifth Staples and Gabriel qualified for the NCAA III National Championships by placing first and second in New England. But Not Easy” 1 83 Women’s Lax Number One In N.E. The PSC women’s lacrosse team, coached by Janet Nell and her assistant Walter Warner, made history twice during the 1979 season. Led by senior tri-captains Leslie Freeman, Patty Morgan, and Laurie Williams, the Panthers won their first division two tournament in the New England tournament in May. They and their opponents, in the finals, Springfield College, became the first women’s teams to ever play in the Yale Bowl in New Haven. The locals brought their perfect record and number one seed to the tournament and defeated their first opponent. Smith, by a score of 17-1 and advanced to the finals with a 9-4 victory over Wellesley which set the stage for the Springfield-PSC final which matched the top two seeds for the crown. Seniors played an important role in the 8-6 victory. Diana Grant, later named M.V.P. for offense, led the PSC attack with strong support from Laurie Williams. The defense was equally impressive, led by tri-captain and defensive M.V.P. Patty Morgan, who totaled 21 checks and interceptions for the tourney; with strong backup from freshman goalie Liz Votolato, who was named to the all-tournament team along with offensive player Kelly Springer. Also providing outstanding defense were seniors Carrie Rossitcr and tri-captain Leslie Freeman. The women’s team certainly deserves a great deal of praise and Coach Nell did just that, saying “I compliment the players for an outstanding season . . . it’s one of the best lacrosse teams I’ve ever coached ... the players deserve all the praise, they worked hard, put it together, and accomplished the winning record that they did.” !S!‘A 'tm tif tv. Some outstanding freshmen filled gaps left from last year’s team and combining with the returning veterans made the Panthers a highly talented team. I.cd by senior co-captain Denise Rioux and junior co-captain Shirley Morgan, the locals started out impressively with four straight wins, among those a 13-2 drubbling of Keene Statc- -thcir first victory ever over KSC. But some physical and mental errors in subsequent games kept the Panthers from keeping up the pace they set at the start. Fine performances were turned in by freshmen Deb Demers. Cindy Decker, and Mary O’Sullivan; sophomores Val Narinkcvicius, Lois Dufford, and Deb Chick; juniors Deb Hughes, Lisa Manz, Reggie Batchcldcr, and Morgan; and senior Rioux. With only one senior graduating, the team’s chances for success next year arc very good indeed. M o 9 Winter Carnival began with the lighting of the torch in front of Mary Lyons and the crowning of this years King and Queen, Diana Hayward and Steve Burdcau. Later that evening, a dance was held at Speare Gym with entertainment by “Them Fargo Brothers”. The entire week was packed with funfillcd activities, from all day movies to skit night where students could act out their fantasies. Each organization also participated in such games as snowshoc races, skiing, broom hockey, swimming, road rally, bombardment, and the mystery quiz. This years dance marathon, which was twice as long as previous years, began with 15 couples and continued for 24 hours, losing only 4 couples. On Wednesday, 10 days after opening ceremony, the snow sculptures were judged with Grafton's “Noah’s Ark” winning. Overall Winter Carnival winner went to Mary Lyon while the division winners were; Div. 1-Sin City, Div. 2-Mary Lion, div. 3-Grafton, Div. 4-Kappa Sigma, and Div. 5-Omega Omicron.
