PLYMOUTH STATE CONNING TOWER EDITORS: SUSAN SOULE PAUL SHULINS GROWING THROUGH THE SEASONS. Welcome to the 1978 CONNING TOWER YEARBOOK The theme of our yearbook is Seasons. Seasons not necessarily in the sun but in the snow and in the wind and in the rain and back into the SNOW again! Throughout these seasons are reflections . . . Reflections that we have attempted to capture and preserve until one day these reflections become memories. In this book you will find lots of these memories. As your eyes stroll through this book try and remember what 1978 FELT like. Do the pictures help to re-awaken that feeling . . . football games . .. Homecoming ... Halloween ... Winter Carnival.. . Graduation? If you have caught that feeling - that mood - you have then caught our theme. Let's start a new theme for this year at Plymouth State College. A new mood is forming ... new feelings. Last year was a year to remember. Let's make some new memories for this year. Let us begin now with autumn 1978. COLORED BY THE SEASONS AND THE CHARACTERS . . . 5 DEDICATION We unanimously dedicate our 1978 yearbook to Dean John C. Foley who, for 32 years, has offered his services as an educator and as an administrator at Plymouth State College. Dr. John C. Foley is leaving behind him a rich legacy not only as a very capable and hardworking administrator, but as a highly successful and prolific coach. Dr. Foley has given us his time and his talents. Dr. Foley has given of himself. His accomplishments have been firmly backed with pride. It was with this pride and good sportsmanship that Dr. Foley led his basketball and baseball teams into championship games and into a mergence with the NE Conference. By the same token, it was with this abundant pride that the Board of Trustees named the new gymnasium at PSC the Foley Gymnasium as a living tribute to Dean Foley. Because of all this, and much more, we dedicate our yearbook to this proud man. We wish Dean Foley continued health, happiness and success as he retires from Plymouth State College after 32 years of phenomenal accomplishments. DEAN JOHN C. Mary Lyons took the honors with their float of a gigantic ice cream sundae. King and Queen for this year were Karen Thompson and Steve Cote representing Mary Lyons. Saturday afternoon saw the soccer team battle Keene in an annual rivalary that came out Keene 1, PSC 0. The Panther football team, cheered on by fans, cheerleaders, and the pepband, captured victory with a 7-0 win over Framingham State. PSC's attempt at breaking a record for the circle sit was foiled by a half-time downpour. 27 Steve Bua BS Bus. Ad. - Marketing Keivn Buckley Douglas Burke BA Biology BS Phys. They went 13-1 in the regular season, their only loss going to Keene. For the first time ever, Plymouth captured the NESCAC title by defeating arch-rival Keene, and as a result of that win, the Panthers were chosen for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the third time in four years. The Panthers had to face North Adams in their NCAA bid. Two years ago P.S.C. beat North Adams and went to the New F.ngland finals. History did not repeat itself and the Panthers fell to the Mohawks 3-0. The Panthers should be proud, for this was a season to remember. The 13 wins were the most ever in regular season play. The Panthers' final record was 13 - 2. The Panthers will be losing only two members to graduation, so next year's team is expected to be exceptional also. 31 3? 1977 FIELD HOCKEY TEAM 34 A CROSS COUNTRY CROSS TRACK 37 COUNTRY Karen Devriendt BS Phys. GYMNASTS ill HOCKEY OF ALL TYPES: ICEBOUND—1978 55 WINTERIM 1978 SNOW, SNOW AND MORE SNOW The 1977-78 Plymouth State Basketball season left a little bit to be desired. There was a coaching change at mid-season that simply took th wind out of the team's sails. They were, as always, an exciting running team that kept the fans hopping. When Dayton Spaulding took over the coaching duty January 28th from Jack Rhodes, he immediately started working on the teams defense which was their downfal The graduating seniors on this years team were Mike Moffett, Mark Malley, Dan Post and Karl Gibeau. All four of these players played considerable roles in the success the team did enjoy this season. 1977-78 Basketball Record OPPONHNT OWN SCORE OPP SCORE SITE SALEM STATE 80 86 H JOHNSON STATE 82 83 A UNITY COLLEGE 97 48 H HUSSON COLLEGE 92 110 A LYNDON STATE 96 126 H CASELTON STATE 79 76 H LYNDON STATE 113 117 A ST. MEN'S SKI ING 1977-78 The PSC women's ski team ended their successful season not only the victors of their Divisional Championship but also were invited to compete in the Canadian-American Championships held at Lake Placid, N.Y. The team's top racer, Kim Vespa, at the same time was invited to the AIAW Nationals in New Mexico where she competed against the top collegiate racers in the country. This was the final intercollegiate competition for seniors: Megan Roberts, Barb Bailey, Paula Keating and Nancy McDavitt. So, with the closing of an exciting season, the women have advanced back to Division I, and will be looking forward to that first snow fall of next season. WOMEN'S In many ways the 1977-78 Wrestling Panthers were a record setting team. The grapplers ended the season with a 9—5 — 1 record, the highest number of matches won in one year. There were first time victories over such teams as Williams College, the University of Hartford, Amherst College, and Trinity College. The panthers also posted only their third team championship in the history of the school but the second for Coach Jim Aguiar. This year the team won the Northern New England Invitational Championships as teams from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont competed for the title. The Wrestling Panthers snatched four first place finishes at the Northern New Fnglands with Tony Serra in the 126 lb. class, Bruce Gabriel and the 150 lb. class. Matt Staples in the 158 lb. class and Charlie Baker in the 167 lb. class. Other individual accomplishments included Matt Staples' fine showing at the Colgate University Tournament where he placed 4th in the 167 lb. class. The Panthers finished 12th at the New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships as Barker and Gabriel made All New England Honors. Bruce Gabriel became only the second two time All New England wrestler as he hustled his way to 5th place in the 142 lb. class. Charlie Barker tied the best individual finish for a Plymouth Stater as he worked his way to a third place finish in the 167 lb. class. These three wrestlers were qualified to attend the NCAA National Championships, also. 68 At the annual team banquet several team awards were announced: Most Improved: Brian Stafford; Most Pins: Bruce Gabriel; Most Inspirational: Charlie Barker; Most Team Points: Bruce Gabriel; Fastest Pin: Matt Staples; Most Valuable: Bruce Gabriel. This is the best team effort we've ever had at Plymouth State stated Coach Jim Aguiar. This team has confirmed the fact that we are a major factor in the New England collegiate wrestling scene.
