1963 Student Publication Plymouth Teachers College Plymouth, New Hampshire The theme of this year's CONNING TOWER is 1963, The Year of Decision and Action. Much action wos shown on the campus of Plymouth Teachers College when students worked to make the public and legislature aware of our many problems. The expanding campus, the fraternity, and other new clubs and activities are all examples of decision and action. The most outstanding change was the decision made giving the college its new name, Plymouth State College. Editor-in-chief Judith Langmead Assistant Editor Robert Cote Business Manager Marilyn Parker Secretary Barbara Brewka Adviser Mr. Ferdinand Helm FOREWORD DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION GRADUATES ACTIVITIES UNDERCLASSES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS DIRECTORY 2 5 7 13 53 81 105 121 128 of a college year The 1963 Conning Tower is dedicated to you, Mrs. Gertrude L. Eisner. Your task is not on easy one— being secretary to three deans, and assisting with admissions, housing, and placement. The student body appreciates the fact that when you have decisions to make, you try your best to please the student. You always have a warm smile and friendly attitude for both the incoming freshmen and the graduate students. The seniors especially are grateful to you, Mrs. Eisner, for your constant assistance in placing them. Mrs. Gertrude Eisner at her desk. Your tireless energy devoted to promoting Plymouth Teachers College in every imaginable aspect is the reason that the 1963 Conning Tower is dedicated to you. DEDICATION Mrs. Eisner introduces Bob Donicls to two superintendents for interviews for o teoching position. of friends and events to remember 5 COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION The year of 1963 promises to be on unusual one for Plymouth Teachers College. We will probably see the Report of the Interim Study Commission on Education presented to the General Court for implementation. That Report recommends that Plymouth Teachers College become a general-purpose college under an administrative pottern that differs from the existing one. Change is continuous ond should be so recognized 1963 will probobly be the year in which Plymouth Teachers College will be made into a stronger force than ever to prepare well-trained teachers, as well as to become an instrument of instruction and exploration in other areas of collegiate preparation. All students at Plymouth Teachers College con take pride that they ore members of a college student body which is alert to the changing times about them and that the leadership of their college is ever attempting to improve ond strengthen its educational program which has had such an enviable record in the annuals of New Hampshire's progress. NEW HAMPSHIRE ©«AN Of INtTftUCTVO arCHAMo , Mirxia DC AN Of ITUPINT PCRtONUll To the Students of Plymouth Teachers College: The same year which has witnessed Astronaut Cooper's spectacular but precisely planned further exploration of space travel; a determined effort to give the negro citizen of the United States equal opportunity in fact os well as in low; a renewed spirit of exploration of factors which ore unifying in some of our greot religious denominations; ond the successful transmission of world-wide television; may prove also to be one of the most significant in the development of Plymouth Teochers College. A new board of trustees concerned wholly with higher education, a broader function which may include liberal arts education as well os preparation for occupations other than teaching, a change in official name to reflect this broader function and service opportunity, continued plant expansion to carry out these new responsibilities effectively, all seem to be developments of tremendous import to the college and the state which it serves. Especially significant of the spirit and capabilities developed here at Plymouth hove been the decisive and vigorous, yet considered and mature, actions taken by faculty and student body to bring obout legislative and executive actions to improve the copobilities of this institution. The responsible citizen, which it is Plymouth's aim to develop, has never before stood firmer, evidenced more loyalty and good judgment, or had greater reason for justifiable pride than during this year which is seeing many issues concerning New Hampshire's higher education system brought into focus ond resolved The members of the Class of 1963 will continue to face endless opportunities and demands for decision and action. May the experiences here at Plymouth inform and strengthen each member of that class so that the decisions will become increasingly backed by wisdom and the actions grow in effectiveness in meeting our world's persisting and evolving problems. Cordially, demands for decision office. THE DEANS Dr. Gertrude B. This record, however, does not indicate the type of hustling team this really was. Badly lacking real size, the '63 version of the green and white was in every ball game. The team lost a number of real close ones. Two of these were to conference champions, Gorham. Scores of the two meetings were 71-75 and 72-75. The Foleymen were noted for their strong defense as the scores indicate. Against the perennial powers, St. Anselm's and Central Connecticut, Plymouth ployed its best basketball in two closely contested games. Senior backcourt men, Dick Chandler and Pete Johnson will be greatly missed. With additional height, however, the Panthers could be hard to handle in '64. A three mon effort to block the challengers. Dick breoks through the defense to make a basket 109 Ken is forced to fumble the ball. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The J. V. team, though unusually small, posted a good 7-5 record. They beat Keene twice and split with Gorham Two of their losses were to very powerful Brewster Academy and the St. Anselm's Frosh. Lack of height greatly handicapped this J.V. unit. Hustle and spirit materially compensated for this lack of size. An anxious crowd owoits the next ploy. A pep bond without much pep. From the first game with Johnson College of Vermont to the last gome with our sister college, UNH, the PTC sextet outmaneuv-ered its opponents to win all of the hard-fought victories. High team spirit, plus coordination and skill in action yielded a team worthy of praise. Those worthy of individual praise ore the two outstanding scorers of the season First in scoring for the season was Charlotte Corey with a total of 68 points. Second was Ellie White with a total score of 54 points. BOYS’ TENNIS The spring of '63 ogoin drew enthusiastic PT C. students to the hillside to watch the traditional tennis matches. However, it seems the weather gave both spectators and players a rough time this year with continual rain-outs. The tennis team is unfortunately losing several senior players this year. Among those whose serves and volleys will be missed are: Bob Wilmot, John O'Wril, Ralph Shackett, George Davis and Dick Chandler. As can be seen from the score sheet, Plymouth again topped Keene in two of the best games of the season. Dan Wszolek, a junior, did an outstanding job in several matches this year.
