THE CLASS OF 1958 presents THE CONNING TOWER Plymouth Teachers College Plymouth, New Hampshire The true purpose of education is to cherish and enfold the seed of immortality already sown within us; to develop, to their fullest extent the capacities of every kjnd with which the God who made us has endowed us!’ Anna Jameson DEDICATION The Class of 1958, in passing, dedicate with gratitude, this Yearbook to Dr. Ruth Griffiths as a symbol of our appreciation of her unceasing devotion to our goals. THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE A readily accepted function of an educational institution is the production of growth in its students. Such growth is more than change — it is change in a desirable direction. Certainly growth in perception of the truth is desirable, but not always easily discernible. Continuous doubt can be depressing and soul shattering, but non-critical belief can bring the growth process to a halt. Plymouth has tried to encourage in you a desirable balance between belief and doubt, a moving forward from previously held positions as new evidence is discovered. This willingness to examine beliefs and modify them as new vistas unfold themselves will, we hope, help you to meet the challenge of educating youth for life in the twenty-first century! Harold E. The first day proved the most difficult for the majority of “Frosh” — what with registration and tea for faculty, students, and parents. That evening, Freshmen were officially welcomed by various faculty members and students. The faculty had planned the next two days for an extensive testing program. Their nerves were soothed, however, by concluding the testing program with a picnic-supper at the President’s home, followed by Game Night in Mary Lyon Gym. Second Row: Coach Goldman, Thurston, Walsh, Bruni, Lynch, Scrard, Micklin, Brock, Fuller, O'Neil, Manager, Joe Richer. Soccer This year marked the advent of varsity soccer at Plymouth Teachers College. The enthusiasm of Coach Goldman, a newcomer to the faculty this year, and the aid of Manager, Joseph Richer, were largely responsible for the team’s impressive .500 average in the New England Teachers College Soccer Conference. Plymouth rushes toward the ball at Holderness Soccer Field as a lone member of the opposition girds for an offensive. Prospective teachers attend a typical first grade classroom situation. S.E.A. Visitors' Day Awed visitors look about Mary Lyon Hall during registration. After the festivities, this familiar scene! “The Inspector 'General” “The Inspector-General,” a farce by the Russian playwright, Nicolai Gogol, was presented by the Plymouth Players on November 4, 5, 6. The play is a satire on political corruption and humorous foibles in general, in nineteenth century Czarist Russia; although nominally a monarchy, the Russian government had many bureaucratic fixtures similar to our own or those of any large governing body, so that Gogol’s play has lived healthfully and humorously to the present. The Players production was a lively and colorful one which sharply pointed up the foolishness, hypocracy and ambition which can exist anywhere there are governments and men. “True wisdom consists not only of seeing what is before your eyes; but in foreseeing what is to come. ” Terrence Ml ' l 1, tmm CLASS OF 1960 Gail Ackroyd Clarence Hailey Marlene Hull Gertrude Anderson Randolph Bailey Richard Bouley Mary Burke Barbara Ashley Kenneth Bcaupry George Bridges Sheila Calcutt Edward Ashnault Nanci Betts Donald Bulger David Cameron Richard Campbell Claire Casey Shirley Caulkins Mary Chapman Mary Ann Ccriosoli Carlton Clements Richard Day Katherine Demers Francis Douglas Nancy Downing Jacqueline Hcllcn Nelson Harper Corrinc Crowe Robert Fitchctt Raymond Hickson Jean Currier Alice Douglas Joyce Happe Richard Horn Bernard Hughes Arthur Jillcttc 1 Patricia LaPlantc t I Rita Martin Lydia MeVitty Juanita Masters Guy Kenneson Arnold Kretschmar Nancy Lindh Jack Lynch James McBride Ann McKonc Lucy Merrill Patty Merrill Rachel Millard Conrad Pcrrault Carol Plaistcd Albert Plouffc Barbara Rousseau Sylvia Roby Richard Saari Everson Rogers Nancy St. Lawrence I Elaine Olsen Theodore Parker ' Deborah Putney Porter Schoff sit i Arthur Slade Jane Sponberg Sandra Spratt Sandra Thibcault Mary Lou Thompson Patricia Wain Gordon Witcher : fc Thomas Thurston Glcnita Tuttle Paul Twombly Michael Walsh Herbert Wheeler David Walker Christmas Activities Sing the song of great joy that the angels began, Sing the glory of God and of good will to man!” John Greenleaf Whittier Chrisimas time at Plymouth Teachers College was celebrated with a variety of seasonable activities, the first of which was the Christmas Dance. The following evening a capacity audience enjoyed our traditional Christmas Concert, Mr. Hans P. Jorgensen conducting the college choir and Miss Grace Cunningham conducting the Guy E. Spearc Grade School Choir. On Thursday the Christmas Banquet was held in the dining room of Mary Lyon Hall. Dr. Ruth Griffiths conducted singing. Following the banquet, a group of college students went caroling throughout the town. Friday morning, the Russell House Senior women sang carols in the dorms and at the home of our college president, Dr. Harold E. Hyde. Traditional at Plymouth, a visitation of caroling was made with the infirmed at Sccva Sj)care Hospital by students. The Choir prepares for the annual Christmas Concert. At the height of the dance. “The Lute Song” “The Lute Song,” second major production of the Plymouth Players this year, is the modern adaptation of the fourteenth century folk drama, “Pi Pa Ki,” by Kao-Tong Kia. This play, only incidentally a musical, was designed, costumed, and staged in a resplendent Hollywood-Oriental motif, intensifying this westernized nature of the ancient story. Intramural Basketball Intramural basketball is organized at the beginning of each semester by those students interested in playing organized basketball but who do not play on the varsity or junior varsity teams. Edward Ashenault, Griffin Harris and Richard Miller were the league’s captains this year. Six teams competed and “The Faculty,” with Harry Eichel as captain, emerged with the best season record. The all-class John C. Foley Award tournament was held early in March. Action under the basket. Who has the ball? Girls Varsity Basketball A number of girls appeared for basketball tryouts. The rugged practice enforced by the coach, eliminated many of the possible team candidates. The girls varsity and junior varsity basketball team, coached by Priscilla Alden, had another successful season. First Row: Doreen Tyler, Val Lamontagnc, Linda Potter, Ann Boucher, Bernice Rurlock, Carol Brown. Connie Rodd, Ann Johnson. Second Row: Marie Mundy, Jackie Hellen, Nancy Brown, Gertrude Merrill, Janet Trcfcthcn. Sylvia Weldon, Sally Lehan, Joyce Moulton. First Row: Claudette Pare, Sheila Allard, Marilyn Currie, Mary Young, captain. Second Row: Nancy Brown, Carol Brown, Linda Plunkett. The morale builders of every team are the cheerleaders. This year, Plymouth was fortunate to have one of the most energetic group of cheerleaders in many years. Captained by Mary Young, the girls spurred the teams onto victory again and again. Men's Varsity Basketball lirjf Row: Cross, Tracy, McCarthy, Dimick, Lynch, Connor, Graham, Owen. Second Row: Scrard, Hr uni, Walsh, Boyle, Kvedar, Saari, Jacques. Third Row: Morton, Hixon, McBride. loosing five of last year’s starters via graduation, the varsity basketball team found the going difficult this year. Moving up from junior varsity were Dick Saari, Mike Walsh, and Jack Lynch, who joined such seasoned performers as Oscar Serard, Reeves Tracy, Melvin Cross, Don Dimick, Dick McCarthy and Frank Bruni. Improving as the season progressed, the Folcy-men accumulated wins over strong Pease Air Force Base, Gorham Teachers College and a comeback-win over arch rival Keene Teachers College. Led by Jack Lynch and Don Dimick, Plymouth played a strong game, although in a losing cause, against powerful St. Anselm’s. The junior varsity, coached by Mr. Howard Goldman, has had a bright season, having suffered losses from only two clubs, the Meredith Lions and St. Anselm’s. Coach Foley. Winter Carnival Freshmen Co-eds pause at Sputnik site. Plymouth Teachers College ushered in its annual Winter Carnival amidst a crisp winter wind and a flurry of snow. Activities beginning with a Skating Party at Russell Field, were followed by a Torchlight Parade and the Sock Hop. Saturday morning various competitive sports events were held at Fronte-nac and Russell Field. In the afternoon, the Freshmen Class was adjudged to be winners of the Snow Sculpture contest. The Carnival was highlighted on Saturday evening at the Carnival Ball when the Carnival Queen Award was presented Miss Joanne Jackson escorted by Mr. James McBride. DR. HYDE CROWNS JOANNE JACKSON The traditional Torchlight Parade, composed of a large segment of the college body and guests, proceeded on Friday evening from Mary I.yon Hall porch to the main entrance of the Auditorium-Gymnasium, led by four torch-bcaicrs and the seven queen candidates. The parade was climaxed there with the crowning of the queen by Dr. Hyde. Presentation of the Roses The Presentation of the Roses, a ceremony accorded the Carnival Queen and attendants each year at the Winter Carnival, was held this year at ten p.m., with Dr. Hyde and his daughter, Mary Anne, presenting the flowers to the Queen and attendants. A grand March was held after the presentation, the Queen and her escort leading it. The smilinj; queen and proud escort lead the Grand March across the middle of the Auditorium-Gymnasium Root, concluding the colorful Presentation of the Roses ceremony. “Finally, education can conduct us to that enjoyment winch is, at once, best in quality and infinite in quantity ” Horace Mann CLASS OF 1959 11 Ji James Ackroyd Anita Barton Suzanne Beaudry Shirley Barron Beverly Bernier Alice Brown Ethel Cochrane Charles Barry , k Evans Boyatsis Beverley Browne Robert Cook Ethel Crawford Gloria Demers Ellen Farrington Gridin Harris Richard Hindlcy Shirley Crewe Lee de iMoulpied Claire Dcshaics Stewart Curtis r Don Dimick Evelyn Harvey Simone Hebert Mary Hill Tatsuko Hotozuka Viola Huntoon Richard Knowles ' 17k Cyprian Kvcdar Janet l.ithglow Patricia McBride Alice Murdough Sylvia Lounder Donald Micklon Janet Murphy Paulj Pietsch Elizabeth MacDonald A Dwight Moody Emily Plante Joyce March Martha Mott Roger Owen Neil Erie Potter Valeric Lamontagne Jane Leavitt Irma Nadeau Sally Lchan r__ dZh Richard Parent o T ; s I-'ranklin Powers Leona Reny Joseph Richer Louise Rinc Roland Robichaud Eleanor Rowe Marlene Ruh Anne Schylcr A n 1 m Esther Scruggs Arnold Shields John Stewart Mary Ellen Terrio Sally Stevens Reeves Tracy Emmett Stewart Roland Vigneault Diane Wageman Louise Welchans Nancy Whittemorc Shirley Woodard Norma Woodard Collegians and Collegianettes Collegians and Collegianettes appear at a College Concert. This group, comprised of nineteen men and women, appears in concerts throughout the state offering some of the lighter types of music not rendered by the entire A Cappella Choir. Soloists from Collegians and Collegianettes, accompanied by Hans P. Jorgensen, choir director. Religious Organizations Both the Newman Club, the Catholic organization, and the Christian Association, the non-denominational organization, are the religious groups on Plymouth Teachers College’s campus. These clubs, jointly and independently sponsor various activities which attempt to increase the students’ awareness of man’s dependence upon God. The Newman Club and Christian Association joindy work with the A Cappclla Choir to produce the Christmas Candlelight Service. During Holy Week, the groups, acting independently, conduct church services. Both groups hold monthly meetings at which invited guests speak or club members conduct discussions. Various faculty members serve as advisors to both these groups. Student Council conducts meeting at special assembly. The Student Council The Student Council is the governing body of the students on campus. Assisted by the faculty advisors, the student representatives meet bi-monthly to make recommendations and decisions concerning the student’s life at Plymouth. This year the Student Council has been concerned mainly with appropriating money from the Student Representation Fund and diligently working on an award, to Ik given annually, to the outstanding senior man. During the year, the Student Council held an open meeting for the student body during an assembly. Action is speeded up by the various committees, such as, the dining room committee, the bookstore committee, the library committee, and the student executive personnel com mittcc, which look into problems and present them to the council for further action. John Clement, president, explains details of budget, assisted by Charles Bailey. Special committee works out line points of Senior Man Award. The CLOCK The “Clock” is Plymouth’s student-edited newspaper. With a staff comprised of approximately twenty persons, it is published monthly. The “Clock” represents a sincere effort to bring to Plymouth Teachers College interesting college news, an impartial discussion of major college issues and worthy literary efforts such as short stories and poems. This year, Miss Germaine Jcnney is editor-in-chief. Dr. Norton Bagley and Professor Richard Sanderson are advisors. The '•Clock” staff in faculty room, Mary Lyon Hall. United Nations Hard working students under the direction of the I.R.C., again this year, planned and directed a successful model U.N. Assembly. High school students from New Hampshire, Vermont, and Quebec converged to our campus to discuss pertinent world problems during the three day session. Assembly speakers, a Rotary Club sponsored banquet, and Club International were among the entertainment provided during the three-day program. MERP WEEK MERP Week is officially entitled Men’s Economic Rehabilitation Program. This novel idea is an annual one week program designed to reduce dating expenses for men. During this week the dating process is reversed. Women students ask the men out and pay the expenses of the date for them. This program has been a favorite on campus among men students. MERP Week Informal Dance. The Senior’s Last Dance. The end of MERP Week officially arrives when the women on campus treat their dates to the MERP Week Dance on Saturday night. Come forth into the light of things, Let nature be your teacher ”—Wadsworth SENIORS AT THE LOST RIVER UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM The Conservation Workshop poses before the week-long adventure begins. Sunday services conducted by the students. Plymouth Teachers College participated in a unique program last summer when twenty-seven members of the Senior Class attended a charter conservation Program at Cost River Conservation Camp. The Undergraduate Program was led by four faculty members, Mr. Robert Boyd acting as group leader. The program was made possible by school funds and aid from the Federated Sportsmen's Clubs of New Hampshire. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests provided the site and considerable instruction in sound forestry principles. Various other organizations aided the leaders in carrying out the program. All the college curricula were represented, and emphasis was placed on methods of teach ing sound resource-use on a variety of levels. The students considered this program exceptionally worthwhile both professionally and personally. The program is being considered for possible continuation next summer. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM AT WORK A view from on top of the newly completed Moore I)amt Littleton, N. H. Group work at Corncrfortl Station, lower-part of Littleton Dam. Learning a technique of measuring tree heights at Lost River Reservation. Student Teaching The most exciting moment for senior students at Plymouth Teachers College is student teaching. This program is the in-training portion of teacher preparation in which each senior teaches for a semester under the guidance of a qualified supervising teacher. It represents the realization of three and one-half years’ training. While the Elementary and Early Childhood teachers teach in the Plymouth schools, the Secondary majors teach in the English, math, social studies, languages and business-education departments in many of the New Hampshire public schools. This year, seventy-two seniors participated in the program. Miss Lois Kretschmar conducts a first grade at Guy E. Sjxrarc School. Here a typical senior assumes teat king responsibilities for the first time. This is the result of three and one-half years of acquiring teaching skills and subject matter at Plymouth. Miss Carol Stone teaches reading to the third grade at Guy E. Speare School. Seniors readily admit teaching is far different from being a student. Theory must be supplemented by experience to be of lasting and meaningful value. Student Teaching Mr. David Ivcstcr describes fractions to fifth-graders in the Memorial School. Miss Sheila A. Sullivan conducts a reading group in the fourth grade at Guy E. Spearc School. At the Memorial School, Miss Nina Savitch conducts board drill in decimals. GRADUATE and SPECIAL STUDENTS Mrs. Hall Mrs. Hewitt Mrs. Newton Mr. Potiver Mr. White Mrs. Rand Mrs. Wick Mr. Worthen Norma Lucille Demers Wilkinson Award The Women’s Recreation Association has established, to commemorate the untimely death of Norma Kay Wilkinson, member of the Class of 1955, the Norma Wilkinson Award. This Award is given to the woman in the senior class who most nearly achieves Norma’s outstanding qualities. The Award for 1958 goes to Miss Lucille Demers. In the fall of this year the Student Government met with the entire student body in an extraordinary session to consider an award honoring the outstanding senior man. A volunteer student committee formulated the objectives of the award. As a result, the award has been dedicated in the memory of Dr. Ernest L. Silver, who served as president of our college for thirty-five years, and has been awarded to Paul Seavey. The Silver Award acknowledges the senior man who has maintained outstanding growth toward those academic and social attributes characteristic of the very able teacher. 395th Engineer Company (Parts Depot) U.
