It would seem that the college would have many traditions, and so it has. In this book, “The Halls of Ivy”, we have attempted to do two things: first, to record some of these traditions and second, to depict some of the people and activities that have given the halls of P.T.C. a place in our memories and will remind us of them in coming years. JlalU oi 9 mi Oh; we lore the Halls of Ivy That surround us here today And we mil not forget Thoy ne he far; far away. To the hallowed Halls of Ivy Every voice mil bid farewell And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell One day a hush will fall The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall And disappear. But us we sadly start Our journeys far apart, A part of every heart Will linger here. In the sacred Halls of Ivy Where we've lived and learned to know That thro ’ the years we ll see you In the sweet after glow. Oh we love the Halls of Ivy That surround us here today And we will not forget Tho' we be far; far away. To show our gratitude, we, the class of 1955, dedicate our Halls of Ivy” issue of the CONNING TOWER to the member of the faculty who has accomplished so much in making Plymouth a place to which we can look with pride and who has stood by the class, encouraging and reassuring us in all our activities — Coach John C. Foley. 7 Vke P;ieAide d' MeMxzqs We who live and study in the ivy-covered walls of our nation’s colleges today have certain responsibilities which we should approach with humility, anticipation, and sincerity. Ours is the task of preserving the knowledge of the past ages of which ivy-covered walls are a symbol. More than that, to us belongs the challenge of discovery of new knowledge about our material world, our relationships with other men, and our spiritual connections with the force which created and guides us. Knowledge is power only if applied, however, so we go forth from halls of learning to larger areas of action to exercise a leadership in the attack upon the ever-challenging problems of our world. One of your classmates who entered with you, was called early from these halls of ivy to her eternal heavenly home. May the qualities of sincerity, loyalty, initiative, sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and high purpose which characterized Norma Wilkinson be a part of the lives of all of the Class of 1955 as you leave Plymouth and all it represents in our way of life. 9 Harold E. We, the graduating class of 1955, shall go forth from these Halls of Ivy, forever holding dear the memory of our classmate, Norma Kay Wilkinson, whose untimely death in the summer of 1953 took her from us — and all those who loved her. Although she is gone, we will never forget her. Norma’s personality, her zest for life, and her incomparable concern for her fellow-man were impressed even upon those who knew her casually. Therefore, we co-dedicate our yearbook to John C. Foley and Norma Kay Wilkinson, a person who gave something of herself to everyone she knew. To us, this is proof of immortality. 18 Al ima WdJzinMn Memorial PlacjjUe Last year the Women’s Athletic Association set up this Norma Wilkinson Memorial Award in order to preserve the memory of the outstanding personality of Norma Kay Wilkinson, a member of the Class of 1955, hoping that the presentation each year will become an honored tradition at Plymouth Teachers College. This year Catherine M. Shaw is particularly honored by being chosen as that senior woman, who, in the eyes of all concerned, comes closest to approximating Norma’s outstanding qualities. Through the presentation of this award, may the spirit and memory of Norma be kept alive at Plymouth Teachers College. 19 Arnold Arthur Adams Tilton Business Education Choir 2; Band 1, 2, 3, Student Director 3; I.R.C. 4; Newman Club 3, 4; Social Club 1; Basketball 2; Class President 1. Q iaduate ami £p cial StuderiU In its fifth year of operation at Plymouth Teachers College, the graduate program has become a vital part of the school. A great deal of the graduate work is done in summer school or in extension courses, but some of the students are on campus either semester or for the entire school year. Some students, who have not been qualified to teach, can take courses enabling them to be certified in this state. 32 To the hallowed Halls of Ivy voice mil bid farewell, Undergraduates 33 First Row: K. ClaM aj 1956 The class of 1956 is fast approaching its last year in the Halls of Ivy.” This year it has added to its growth through successful running of the popular College Shop for its second year. The College Shop has expanded greatly under the operation of the juniors, and it is hoped this College Shop will also become a tradition at Plymouth. 34 The class of 1957 is already an integral part of the life here at Plymouth Teachers College. Last year it had a good start with many enjoyable freshmen activities. This year the class worked hard to earn money, and the members of the class have made it possible for college students to have a quick cup of coffee in the new Coffee Shop” located in Hall Dormitory. It is hoped by all that this will be the beginning of a popular social center. GlaU '957 First Rote: N. Ross. B. Mills, J. Hodsdon, R. Sanderson, Adviser; P. Heath. Second Rote: J. Lchan, S. Such activities as the festive decorating of Mary Lyon Lobby for Christmas and the Freshman Talent Show are examples of this fine spirit. Croft. student Gcumcil When Plymouth was a Normal School, what is now known as the Student Council was then known as Student Government and was led by Governors. But since 1942 it has been known as the Student Council with a president leader. The Student Council meets bi-monthly. This year the meetings have been concerned mainly with appropriating money from the Student Representation Fund and approving constitutions of the various dormitories. The student body is represented on the council by two men and two women from each class and one man and one woman commuter from each class. Action is speeded up by committees which hx k into problems. They bring them back to the council for further action after making recommendations. 46 An active social club on the campus dates back nearly thirty years. It has influenced many of the activities on campus, and each year as the ivy has climbed higher the college has seen new changes in sporting events, functions at the School Camp, and other activities on campus and away. Possibly a new precedent has been started this year by the Social Club Presidential Campaign which lasted for three days last fall. There was extreme enthusiasm in the campaigning of the fellows and girls, climaxing in a bonfire in Russell Field with singing and speeches. The following day the student body voted for its choice of president. The Social Club was responsible for the successful Halloween and Christmas Banquets. It also sponsored the Winter Carnival in cooperation with the town of Plymouth, provided for the long anticipated outing to Keene Teachers College for the final game of the season, and culminated its activities with the May Formal. If the buildings could give back their echoes of thirty years ago, we might hear some of the same songs being sung by the Junior (underclassmen) and Senior Glee Clubs. In 1945 the Chapel Choir was formed, which was a small group who sang a capella. But this group soon gave way to the A Capella that we know today. The choir was organized in 1947 under the direction of Mr. Jorgensen. It has developed from thirty-five voices at that time to nearly a hundred this year. Gaining steadily in popularity, the choir performs annually at the Christmas Candlelight Service and gives concerts on campus and throughout the state. COLI.F.G1ANF.TTES COLLEGIANS Pint Row: C. If we pull back the thickly twined ivy, we may find the predecessor of our present dramatic club. Years ago there was a dramatic organization called the Pan Athenian, which restricted its membership to upperclassmen. The Plymouth Players was organized by Roi White in 1952. No restriction is placed upon membership and during the past four years the club has grown steadily. Besides providing entertainment for the student btxly through three-act plays and occasional one-act plays in assemblies, they have given performances off campus, many of which are sponsored by local organizations. Successful three-act plays for this year have been THE CIRCLE, THE CRADLE SONG, MISSOURI LEGEND, and THE MILKY WAY. First Row: I)r. Griffiths, Adviser; C. Keenan, H. Dietzel, P. Jones, E. O’Connor. It is associated with the National Association of F.T.A. and the National Education Association. It is a professional organization with the purpose of acquainting its members with the local, state, and national association. This is partly accomplished through the state and national Journals which are received and through meetings. The chapter sends delegates to state and national conferences. Ruth Dietzel represented New Hampshire at the NAFTA Leadership Conference this year and gave a report in assembly on this conference. A project of the F.T.A. is to assist in the recruitment of high school students to attend P.T.C. This is accomplished through the sponsoring of Visitors Day when interested students are invited to our campus. 50 If we could turn back the pages of time to 1928, we might hear snatches of conversation, even mounting to argument, of whether or not the Philippines should be granted complete independence. This was one of the topics of the debating society on campus which had informal discussions on current problems. This organization was known as the Forensic. The Forensic joined the Carnegie International Relations Club in 1945 to broaden its activities. Today the question of independence for the Philippines no longer concerns us, but there arc other outstanding topics in which the I.R.C. seeks to promote an understanding and interest. Informative meetings held twice a month are comprised of movies, film strips, panel discussions, and debates on important issues. The most important event of the year was the Fifth Annual Model United Nations General Assembly, held here in the spring in cooperation with Rotary International. This model assembly, symbol of a striving for world understanding, is unique at P.T.C. First Row: M. Bickford, B. Batchelor, J. Darling, S. Spencer, F. Ramsey. Second Row: F. Tibbetts, D. Mofhtt, R. Blanchette. Since its beginning in October, 1945, the Christian Association has become responsible for many of the traditions at P.T.C through its activities. Monthly meetings are held which are planned to provide spiritual, aesthetic, recreational, and developmental activities. It is non-denomina-tional in nature and is a member of the Student Christian Movement. Some of the highlights of this year’s activities were the Parents Day Program, Thanksgiving Assembly, and planning the Christmas Candlelight Service in conjunction with the Newman Club. Christmas brings many opportunities to serve. This year the C.A. sponsored a dance to raise funds to make Christmas happy for a needy family in town. The club also sponsored Christmas Caroling for the entire student body. Vespers during Holy Week are conducted by members of the C.A. at one of the local churches. Being non-denominational, the association tries to achieve in its services and activities the broad generally accepted principles of the Christian way of life. Qld udium AdAacudicm First Row: M. However, it wasn’t until the year 1953 that the Seton Club became affiliated with the National Federation. The Seton Club was the previous Catholic organization on campus which was active since 1940. The purpose of this organization is to advise one spiritually. The activities for this year included discussions, a spaghetti supper, speakers, and a Communion Breakfast. 53 An organization on which the ivy has hardly had a chance to grow is the Science Club. First appearing in 1948, it has engaged in many activities of interest leading up to the successful sponsorship of the State Science Fair for high schools in the spring of 1954. The Science Club offers experience for students, who are interested in science, to enable them to extend their knowledge beyond the classroom. Meetings are held monthly, and trips of a scientific nature are planned which are sponsored by the club. Highlights of this year included a trip to Dartmouth to hear Dr. Harold Urey, an eminent physicist, and to New Jersey for the Eastern Colleges Science Research. Science QLA- I'irsl Row: R. Beaudoin. It was discontinued for many years, but was eventually newly launched under the same name in 1940 and continued until 1948. The college newspaper, THE CLOCK, made its appearance two short years ago through student demand. It is supported by a portion of the student activity fee and by advertising. The paper has grown from mimeographed issues to printed issues containing pictures of timely events on campus. This year an issue was printed each month. THE CLOCK serves the college as a record of past and coming activities and as a place for interested students to try their journalistic wings.” There is opportunity to do writing, reporting, editorializing, and interviewing. This work in journalism will be valuable for those who may be asked to advise high school papers. 55 One day a hush jvill fall, The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall And disappear. However, it is since 1947 and Coach Foley’s coming to P.T.C. that the varsity players have really made great strides toward conference titles. In the fall of the year, about the time the ivy begins to turn red and brown, the varsity basketball team begins practice for a rugged five-month season. This year the team secured second place in the New England Teachers College Athletic Conference by defeating Keene Teachers College by one point in the last game of the year on Keene’s home court. 58 Spring comes late to Plymouth each year; the ivy is just beginning to grow again when summer vacation arrives. Baseball also came late to Plymouth. But in just a few short years the sport has become so well established that its season is anticipated as much as the coming of the ivy. This year, as in former years, the team was coached by John Foley. liaA kall Pirsl Row: Coach Foley, T. Monahan, R. Blakslce, J. Hodsdon, R. Angers, W. Heinz, F. Morin, R. Brunelle, W. Evans. Under the able guidance of Miss Alden, the girls have regular meetings to discuss various changes in the rules of the individual sports. This year they engaged in such activities as sponsoring Sport Days and Field Days and distributing Christmas baskets. 60 Class games or intramural sports date back to 1926, so this is nothing new at P.T.C. The intramural program is sponsored by the W.A.A., and, depending on the season, there are such activities as speed-a-way, basketball, and badminton, to name a few. Qinld,' nJAammal Virst Row: J. This need was met by the organization of a group of cheerleaders which became active around 1947. The girls are chosen on a competitive basis. It is usual for twenty girls to compete for the seven I positions. To be a member of the group is an honor as well as a privilege. The shouts and cheers of these girls in green and white will be as great a part of the memories in the years to come as the games themselves. 62 I UJ kI j The CONNING TOWER staff wishes to give special recognition to Mr. Richard Sanderson, our advisor, who, with his ever-present assistance and patience, has played a large part in making this year book a reality.
