All phases of our campus and its life have passed through a transition period of four years. Our Class of 1954 has experienced great strides in the improvement of the physical and social aspects of our campus. We have witnessed a change of administration, a face-lifting of our classroom and dormitory buildings, and many new governmental and social activities. The new gymnasium-auditorium augurs the brightest future. Our thoughts and efforts have been centered around our CAMPUS, therefore in the following pages we have endeavored to depict such evidences. MARY LYON HALL dedication In appreciation of your devoted kindness, understanding attitude, and unceasing endeavors to make our work more pleasant and our lives richer through your never failing good humor and cheery smile, we, the Senior Class of 1954, gratefully dedicate to you, Robert Boyd, our yearbook. ir -■ '  . I LOVE COFFEE . . MARY LYON HALL . . . the president's message Perhaps never before in the history of our country has there been so much interest in and discussion about public education as there is today. This concern reflects the importance of our educational system in the continuous improvement of our way of life and the vital part which the teacher plays in every community. This responsible part which you members of the Class of 1954 will play in our country's future should stimulate all of you to continue for your lifetime the search for the true, the beautiful, and the good with which we have tried to help you here at Plymouth. Self-government in a democracy by free men requires wisdom. Men are born free. They are not born wise. Helping men to acquire the wisdom to keep them free is the great opportunity afforded the teacher. Gertrude Shaw Silver Stella Hughes Durkee Mrs. Stella H. Durkee retires this year after fifteen years of service to Plymouth Teachers College and the children of the community. Mrs. Durkee has served as a supervising teacher in the Guy E. Speare school and since 1949 as its principal. Always mindful of the human relations elements in her work, she has been a sincere and helpful friend to pupils, parents, teachers, and student-teachers alike. Plymouth has been fortunate to have a person of such broad understanding and sympathetic appreciation of personal problems as the director of the elementary student teaching program. Mrs. Gertrude Shaw Silver is retiring at the end of this college year after having given over forty-one years of service to Plymouth Teachers College. Mrs. Silver came to Plymouth on November 1, 1912 as Secretary to the President. In 1943 she was appointed Administrative Assistant and has been responsible for assisting the President with budgeting, purchasing, accounting, and plant maintenance. After his retirement, Gertrude Shaw was married on August 15, 1947 to President Emeritus Ernest L. Silver, at whose side she had worked so faithfully . in the building of Plymouth Teachers College. Faculty and students are going to miss her quiet, friendly greeting, her unfailing courtesy and deep concern for student welfare, and her efficient management of the multitudes of business transactions which have been her responsibility. We are glad that we can keep her as a close neighbor, for we know that much that is Plymouth resides in her head and her heart. 8 HAROLD E. While most of the students are doing the required work during summer sessions or in extension courses, several students are on campus for one semester or the entire year. A few students because their previous college work did not prepare them for teaching are taking courses to enable them to receive teaching certification in this state. Each year is finding more New Hampshire teachers working toward the Degree of Master of Education. 29 CUE UPI MARY LYON HALL RAGTIME FIRST ROW: R. Dietzel, L Barry, R. Anger . Treasurer; t. MacNeill. Our campus society is governed by a student-representative group with the assistance of faculty advisors. It is set up to view recommendations and make decisions on issues that concern the welfare of the student body and the college. When long, heated discussions result from lack of information concerning a problem, the matter is often referred to a committee for further investigation. The committee pursues the problem, finds possible solutions, makes recommendations, and refers it back to the council for final action. To give the student body more of an idea of how the Council operates, a model council meeting was staged during an assembly program. Does this sound like something you have heard before? We hope so, because we feel that the democratic approach to any problem is the most beneficial in finding the answer that does justice to all. The meeting is adjourned . . . 36 . . . social club council What's going on around here . . . ? Oh, you said the Social Club Council takes care of that. Let’s take a look! In the fall we might find the Council planning the schedule for the coming year. With pencil in one hand and eraser in the other, the members are making a careful study to dovetail the various events in what we call the Social Calendar. On the calendar we find events such as the Holiday Hap, the Carnival Ball, and the May Formal. Take, for instance, the Carnival Ball which is a gala event of the year with a King and Queen and an off-campus orchestra. The Council establishes committees to work on programs, decorations, and refreshments. The Council has many other duties to perform, so if you want to know what is going on just ask the Social Club Council — if you can find them . . . STEERING COMMITTEE FIRST ROW: N. The Women's Athletic Association sponsors the intramural program, which is organized in such a way that teams play each other until elimination finally brings forth a winning team. The girls also sponsor special events such as spaghetti dinners, weenie roasts, and pop corn parties at which time rules of basketball, field hockey, and badminton are discussed. 40 Oh, a rule book, please! . . . NORMA WILKINSON MEMORIAL PLAQUE The Women's Athletic Association is proud to be the sponsor of the Norma Wilkinson Memorial Plaque. This award is to be presented annually to the senior woman who, in the eyes of all concerned, comes nearest to attaining all those outstanding qualities which were exemplified in Norma. The Athletic Association is anxious that the Norma Wilkinson Award be a significant one. She herself was such an outstanding person that we who knew her want her name remembered. Through the presentation itself it is hoped that all will appreciate and understand the sincerity of us who are trying to perpetuate her memory. Above all, it is hoped that this honor will, in reality, be just that, and that each year's recipient will be one who has justly earned the respect of all at the college. 41 KNEEUNGr B. Callaghon, J. Orange pumpkins were seen on the hay-carpeted floor, and wagon wheels were found about the corners of the hall. Among the local characters at the dance was Marrying Sam, better known as Donald Elsemore. One of the main events of the evening was a melodrama depicting life in the Ozarks.
