Gertrude E. McGunigle To the Graduates of the Elementary Curriculum “And then come the children and bring with them a diversion that remains forever new.”— “The Dream Play” by Strindberg. Yours will be the privilege and the opportunity of helping to guide and to shape the character and the mind of a child. You can, through music and poetry, help him to enrich and ennoble his own spiritual and emotional life. One of your greatest opportunities is to encourage him to think for himself and to develop his own faculties. You have not chosen an easy road. You will need energy, courage, patience, enthusiasm, and sincere respect for the opinions of others. Remember always that the work you have chosen is well worth doing. If you work wholeheartedly with a definite purpose, you will realize an inner strength and a sense of true satisfaction. Your life is before you—“Hitch your wagon to a star.” Gertrude E. McGunigle 22
