R. Van Horn, the Board of Educa- tion has done its duty successfully. Plymouth Bor- ough is very fortunate in securing such a group of men to serve as school directors. Many communi- ties have suffered because of individuals who only looked out for themselves, but Plymouth glories in these unselhsh men who are only concerned with the good of the people. They have strived to do everything they can in order to have the best possible training for the children of our com- munity, the most economical management of school finances for the taxpayers, and the best pos- sible conditions for security of the teachers.

R. R. VAN HORN IOIIN DVXUGI-IliR'l'Y II-.RRY I.. BIORRIS IUIIY BRACE JAINHQS NIORGAN .Snhunl Qbiuztrh Iust as in Shakespeares time, conditions changed rapidly, so they are changing today. New modes of liv- ing were originated. Among them was the realization and conception of the value of learning. There had to be leaders, however, to make learning widespread and a necessity for everyone. Withotit men who could think and plan ahead for the future, ideas would have remained ideas. lt is much the same today--duty must be met and accomplished. The members of the School Board realized that crowded conditions in the classrooms were becoming almost un- bearable. Therefore, they set about trying to overcome this. As a result, on February 22, 1937, a new and complete annex of twenty-one rooms, including a workshop, labora- tory and mechanical drawing room was added to the last wing of the Iunior High School. This great improvement was made possible through the cooperation of the Board of Education with the Federal Government in working this out as a W. P. A. project, thus saving the community thousands of dollars. However, that was only part of the job. Once the plan was initiated. engineers, contractors and laborers had to be employed, materials that would stand all kinds of weather had to be chosen. Every detail was attended to with the utmost care and thoughtfulness. The building of this annex now enables the seventh, eighth and ninth grade students to attend school from 8:45 a. m. to 3:20 p. m. It eliminated the two sessions which had formerly been scheduled-the eighth and ninth grades attended school from 3:1o a. m. to 1:15 p. m., and the seventh grade from 1:20 to 5 p. in.. Following is a brief account of the members of the Board of Education: The president of the board is R. R. Van Horn, who has held that position because of his ability and judgment since 1933. Besides carrying out his duty as head of the Board, Mr. Van Horn acts as vice president and gen- eral solicitor for the Luzerne County Gas and Electric Corporation. Another member well deserving of credit is Iohn Daugherty, who serves as chairman of the Property Com- mittee. He, also, is an outstanding citizen of Plymouth, who holds the position as superintendent of the Luzerne County Gas and Electric Corporation. Iames Morgan, interior decorator, is chairman of the Finance Committee. Formerly president and vice president, respectively, of the Board, his experience en- ables him to handle this position with great care and perseverance. Chairman of the Teachers' Committee, Iohn l.. Brace, is a prominent member of our community, serving for many years in various odiices of the county. Ierry L. Morris, chairman of the Athletic Committee, is also district representative for the Wilkes-Barre Times- Leader. The townspeople have shown their appreciation for his Hne services by recently electing him for the fourth time as Director. Secretarial problems for the Board are capably handled by William Y. Matthews, who is also trust officer of the First National Bank. Appointed as Secretary in IQ23, Mr. Matthews has had many opportunities to prove his fine judgment. A member of the Board since IQ33, Harry B. Kocher, noted businessman, holds the position as chairman of the Textbook Committee. Although comparatively new, he has shown Fine spirit and originality in dealing with the various problems in that department. Superintendent of Schools Henry S. Iones is considered an invaluable member of the Board because of his knowl- edge and experience with tl1e school. Mr. Iones, a long resident in Plymouth, has availed himself of an ample education and therefore rules the students with a Firm but just hand. iixinu' 14o:i1n-,iz lIlXV.XRD ron v.'11.1.1xx1 v.
