E ileen Hancox, Forrest Stockwell Elinrewurh On the pages of this 1949 edition of The Plymouth Rock, we, the staff, have tried to record in words and pictures the phases of school activities which We feel have deeply impressed our student life. We believe that the spiritual, mental, social, and physical experiences in high school have an everlast- ing influence on our living, therefore, we hope these pages will serve to keep them vivid. It is our hope, too, that this book of memories shall serve to establish an underlying pride in our accom- plishments during the time spent in Plymouth High School. Glnntentz THE DOORWAYS OF LIFE I. Spiritual-Literary II. Mental A. Administration B. Classes III. Social-Organizations IV. Physical A. Boy's Sports B. Girl's Sports Ehenw Life presents to each of us a continuous series of difficult doorways, and our lives are definitely affected by the experiences encountered in each. These Door- Ways Of Life are constantly open for our exploration. Victory in life depends on our ability to grasp from ev- ery new adventure something which will enrich our daily living. Through this book we are endeavoring to share with you some of our experiences which have played an im- portant role in helping us to develop what we feel to be the greatest of all arts, The Art of Living. To Mrs. Sarah Clippert and Miss Carrie Prentice Whose genial kindnesses, charming personalities, and appreciation of the highest and best ideals in life and whose sincere endeavor to do their best at all times have made for them a place in the hearts of all those with whom they have come in contact, We, the Senior Class of 1949 affectionately dedicate this volume of the Plymouth Rock. Oh, dry with the dryness of ashes shall be the heart that remembereth not. Dedzmzzzfn 5 W Ca 1572.6 1:2622 zfzbc cfczfafz fjyfpfzfzb UZ ZVZ HE ' I2 Z x x N5 x S5 x N5 x x ES -x x X x N5 NN - N! N! To me life is a great adventure. I give people the ability to adjust themselves to new and different circumstances. ' I am willing to try and try again. I know failure does not spell defeat. I inject a spirit of daring. The future and all it holds attracts me. In full appreciation of the past, I am primarily interested in the future. I am not satisfied with life's dull, monotonous round. I want vibrant life with meaning and purpose. I have a consuming desire to make life Worth- while by serving humanity. I do not believe the world is going to the dogs. Iam dissatisfied with social conditions as they are, and I am willing to spend myself to change them. I was dominant in the life of Jesus, and because of that he is dominant in the lives of countless youth. He is my Christ. By Edmond H. Babbitt Isn't it strange that princes and kings And clowns that caper in sawdust rings, And common folks like you and me Help to make up Eternity? To each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass and a book of rules, And each must make, ere life is Hown, A stumbling block, or a stepping-stone. We are a people of destiny- America is,God's experimental ground- The worldcan live together, for It does live together in us. -E. Stanley Jones Calm Soul of all things: make it mine To feel, amid the city's jar, That there abides a place of thine, Man did not make, and cannot mar! -Matthew Arnold. There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave, There are souls that are pure and true, Then give to the world the best you have And the best will come back to you. -Qladeline Bridges So live that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan that moves To the pale realm of shade, where each shall take His chamber in the silent hall of death, Thou go not like the quarry-slave at nite Scourged to his dungeon, But sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, Approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, And lies down to pleasant dreams. ---Bryant They do Wrong who say I come no more When once I knock and fail to find you ing For every day I stand outside your door, And bid you wake, and rise to fight and win. -Walter Malone We build our future, thought by thought, Or good or bad, and know it not- Yet so the universe is wrought. Yesterday is but a dream, Tomorrow is but a vision, But today well spent Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, Every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to This Day-- Such is the salutation of the Dawn. HSanskrit Teach me your mood, O patient stars! Who climb each night the ancient sky, Leaving on space no shade, no scars, No trace of age, no fear to die. There are glimpses of heaven to us in every act or thought, or word, that rises above ourselves. I live for those who love me, Whose hearts are kind and trueg For the Heaven that smiles above me, And awaits my spirit too, For all human ties that bind me, For the task by G-od assigned me, For the bright hopes yet to find me, And the good that I can do. There is so much good in the worst of us, And so much bad in the best of us, That it ill behooves any of us To Hnd fault with the rest of us. The truth itself is not believed From one who often had deceived. Oh, Master Builder! Keep thou our vision clear Upon thy perfect plan- May we with patient, tender, skillful hand Unfold, Uplift, Expand. My life is great only as I have committed myself to some great cause, some program, some idea, greater than I alone could be. The ,first step to greatness is to be honest. -Johnson The Holy Supper is kept, indeed, In Whatso we share with another's need, Not what we give, but what we share, For the gift without the giver is bare, Who gives himself with his alms feeds three, Himself, his hungering neighbor, and Me. -James Russell Lowell My business is not to remake myself, But to make the absolute best of what God made. -Browning So nigh is grandeur to our dust So near to Cod is man, When duty whispers low, Thou must, The youth replies, I can. -Emerson Just to do good in a quiet way, Just to make brighter another's day, Just toturn hard work into play And thus gain nutrition. The drudge may fret and tinker Or labor with lusty blows, But back of him stands the Thinker, The clear-eyed man who knows g For into each plow or saber, Each piece and part and whole, Must go the Brains of Labor, Which gives the work a soul! Back of the motors humrring, Back of the bells that sing, Back of the hammers drumming, Back of the cranes that swing, There is the eye which scans them Watching through stress and strain, There is the Mind which plans them- Back of the brawn, the Brain! -Berton Braley Real knowledge, like everything else of value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, and more than all, must be prayed for. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. -Benjamin Franklin Every man must educate himself. The first one is Frosty The King of the Crowd. Oh gee, here's Mary Jane Who's smart and mighty sweet She has no eye for any man As a friend, she can't be beat. With a Yeah, rah, rah, And a Fight, team, fight Aleshire's in there winning And using all his might. And here's the genius, Eleanor With an eye for music, too She's really fun to be around So terrific is her I. Q. Now when it comes to having fun I'm sure ,you'll all agree Without our gay and laughing Tip How dull our class would be. Oh see the dark-haired Romeo There's one in every class Since Kenny hates to study so I wonder if he'll pass? Red hair creates sensation In that there is no doubt! For when'er Eileen goes walking There must be men about! Real tall and handsome, too I'm referring to our Bill He also loves the women And bends them to his will. Gllaza Harm g Good-natured Betty, really cute With an eye for only one Quite promising, so says her man And really lots of fun. Tall and blonde, with shoulders broad But meek and sort of shy Arthur's puzzling in most ways I wish I knew, Iwonder why? Although he's lazy, will not study Has lots of time to kill Dene's the guy for playing pool With truly practiced skill. Now when I think of telling jokes Dolores can't be beat I hear her laughter ringing yet It's really quite a feat. With a yen for taking pictures In his slow but steady pace It's Cox, the Camera-Man Blond hair plus smiling face. Winner of the D. A. Teacher Traveling Salesman Settled in Indian Territory Farmer Model for Men's Wearing Apparel Pilot Married A Baie with Eeaierhag In the fall of 1945 there gathered in the study hall of Plymouth High School, eighteen green youngsters. At last we were in High School. Our class was made up of ten boys, Donald Aleshire, Billy Burton, Dene Cludray, Robert Cox, Lloyd Dorethy, James Kelly, Arthur Roberts, Harley Speers, Forrest Stockwell and Henry Van Brooker-and eight girls, who were Eloise Corder, Donna Dowacter, Eileen Hancox, Mary Jane Hendricks, Betty Kendall, Do- lores Phillips, Imogene Stoneking, and Eleanor Simmons. Later in the year two new students, Francis Fugate and Kenneth Barth, joined us, making our class roll total twenty. Officers elected for the year were: President, Forrest Stockwell, Vice Presidents, Mary Jane Hendricks and Don Aleshire, Secre- tary, Treasurers, Donna Dowacter and Eileen Hancox, Reporters, Betty Kendall and Billy Burton. Our class advisor was Miss Lela Duncan. We freshmen had scarcely become adjusted to High School life, when the jolly juniors gave us a bang-up initiation. They showed no mercy on us, and We were forced to come to school dressed as farmers, negroes, tramps, old women, and even brides and grooms. As if this wasn't enough, they enter- tained us in the evening, being generous enough to give us refreshments of lemon juice, alum and Cat eyes and also an enjoyable trip through a horror room, where we were privileged to meet a corpse. A Other activities for the year included a Christmas party, held in the gymnasium. In August of 1946 our class consisted of eighteen boys and girls. We had lost Eloise Corder, Lloyd Dorethy, James Kelly, Henry Van Brooker, Francis Fugate, and Kenneth Barth dut were happy to welcome James Gallagher, Adeline Hoppe, Nancy Hopping, and Ray Kamm. Our sponsor was Mr. Leo Osterman. Our first activity was a return party given in honor of the seniors. We treat- ed them to ahay-rack ride and refreshments. Next, Mr. Osterman royally entertained us with a theatre party in Macomb. We also sponsored a skat- ing party which gave us our first real financial start. When the school year of 1947 and 1948 rolled around, we were all back in our places, with the exception of James Gallagher, and we had added two other students-Charles Kimble and Marion Simmons. We soon gained another member, Kennith Hays, who transferred from Brazil, Indiana. Class officers were Betty Kendall as president, Don Aleshire as vice-president, and Imogene Stoneking as reporter. Guy McMinimy was our advisor. In January, Dene Cludray had the misfortune to be seriously injured in an automobile accident and he was forced to discontinue school for the rest of the year. This year we worked very hard toward making money. We very successfully carried on a magazine sale which resulted in a large profit. Next, we spon- sored the annual Penny Carnival which added to our treasury. We gave a movie, The Big Fix, also as a fund raising project. Next came our class play, Spring Fever, a three-act comedy produced under the fine direction of Mr. McMinimy. Later, as we had all worked quite hard, we decided to enter- tain ourselves at a card party which was held in the Home Economics room. In early May we entertained the seniors with the annual Banquet and Prom which we held in the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel Ballroom in Quincy, Illinois. Many of us also enjoyed a movie while for others, the roller rink was the main attraction. School in 1948 began in September and it was no longer a Community High School but a Community Consolidated High School. This year, Donald Ale- shire, Billy Burton, Bob Cox, Donna Dowacter, Eileen Hancox, Mary Jane Hendricks, Betty Kendall, Dolores Phillips, Arthur Roberts, Forrest Stock- well, Imogene Stoneking, Eleanor Simmons, Marion Simmons, Ray Kamm, and Kennith Hays were known as seniors. We were also very glad to hear that Dene Cludray had recovered sufhciently from his injuries to have spe- cial instruction, which was given by Mrs. Juanita Scott, and would be able to graduate with us. Those elected as officers were president, Mary Jane Hen- dricksg vice-president, Bob Cox, secretary-treasurer, Eleanor Simmons 5 reporter, Kenny Hays. This, too, was a very busy year. In November, we joined with the juniors and again the Penny Carnival, with an added Variety Show, was presented. Our class play, The Campbells Are Coming, a hilarious hillbilly comedy, scored a direct hit when it was presented. As another fund raising scheme we were permitted to sell pencils and a large variety of school paper all dur- ing the year, and in April We held a bake sale which netted several dollars for our treasury. Our annual staff was elected and by mid-year had started its workin earnest on the The Plymouth Rock. The annual senior trip is to be a three-day stay in Chicago, beginning the evening of May 24. Baccalaureate exercises will be held on May 28 at the Baptist Church and Commencement will be on the evening of May 31 at the Congregational Church. We have also had a chili supper for our class, to which each member invited a guest. The second semester we have Richard Miller as presidentg Alberta Dowacter, vice-presidentg Lowell Thompson, secretary, Roger Emery, treasurer and Maxine McKinley, reporter. The only activity this semester has been a class party honoring our president's birthday. Zllrealjmrn Gilman On September 2 there were thirty-seven freshmen enrolled in Plymouth High School but by the end of the year our class had increased to a total of forty. At our first class meeting the following officers were elected: president, Shirley Powellg vice-president, Geraldine Simmonsg secretary-treasurer, Edward Hoytg class reporter, Robert Miller. - The junior class gave the freshmen an initiation party. The treatment was rather rough but all had fun. Home economics is valuable as it contributes to attaining the large ob- jectives through Which education may be realized. Its special contributions will come in working out wholesome, satisfying personal and social relation- ships, and in utilizing the resources of the individual and the family in pro- viding means for the satisfaction of needs, development of interests, and use of capacities in attaining the values set up as most worthwhile. iinglisah The three-fold purpose of our English department is to aid each pupil to acquire an appreciation for good literature, to develop reading ability, and to gain skill in written expression. Reading good literature tends to contribute a sense of sound values in developing a pupil's outlook on life. This is clear whens we remember that a great body of the accumulated wisdom and comznon sense of the race is con- tained in literature. Reading and writing ability can be acquired only through actual practice, serious use of the dictionary, and careful checking. In our English classes we have devoted sincere effort toward these ends knowing that as we educate individuals so we educate society. mathvmatirz . During the current year, the mathematics department offered the follow- ing courses: Algebra I., Plane Geometry, Advanced Algebra Cone semesterj, Solid Geometry Cone semesterl, and Practical Mathematics. Few of us realize how often we really come in contact with mathematics, in the store, the home, the office. Daily our lives touch the field of mathe- matics. The courses in this department offered in the first two years, teach a student to handle numbers, to think in the abstract, to reason logically, and to give him a foundation for higher mathematics as found in the advanced courses in high schools and in colleges. Without mathematics as found in our high school, there would be little progress, such as is shown by the radio and by great structures like the Empire State Building. Glgping, r Typing, a skilled subject, is offered to both juniors and seniors this year. Interest in typing seems to be on the increase as every student in the jun- ior class undertook to master this skill. The beginning students learn to arrange numerous styles of personal and business letters, address envelopes, arrange simple tabulated reports, use car- bon paper and various other simple tasks which might be encountered in the business oflice. The advanced students spend considerable time in an effort to reach a high rate of speed. Their work consists of more complicated busi- ness letters and tabulated reports, proofreading, letters of application, legal documents, hectographing and mimeographing, use of numerous oflice forms, etc. These students are responsible for the publication of the school news- paper. They also do considerable work for local individuals and organiza- tions during the year. At the end of the year the achievement of these students will be reward- ed with certificates and pins. Agriculture The first major activity of the F.F.A. outside of conventional class room work and F .F.A. meetings and nearby trips to special agricultural meetings, was attendance at the Annual National Convention of the F.F.A. at Kansas City. This convention was, no doubt, the high spot of the year for the 15, 000 boys who were there. Forty-seven states and two territories were repre- sented. Rubbing elbows with, and conversations relative to farming, ran- ching, agriculture education, chapter activities, etc. in a group of this size, from all sections of the country is one of the major benefits of large group meetings, such as the one at Cosmopolitan Kansas City. All boys except Richard Miller, Carl VanFleet, Verle Twitchell, Laverne Martin and Lyle Hoener attended this excellent convention. Because We have all out doors for a very roomy farm shop, one might consider farm shop an outside activity. In any event, one wagon, two com- bination grain boxes and hay racks, one farrowing pen, a large brooder house and several minor jobs were done while the weather permitted. 3' xx gi f I Q f x X 1.-LAXX 4 -1 II- -I . w 1 .I 'I1jVI I '.. A subtle grace of heart and mind that flows With tactful sympathyg the sweetest rose, If not the fairest, that the garden knows. A quick responsiveness in word and deed, A dignity and stateliness at need, The will to follow or the art to lead. She to whom this most gracious gift is known Has life's great potent factor for her own, And rules alike the cottage and the throne. -Louisa Carroll Thomas A winning personality is made up of three im- portant factors---imagination, common sense, and courage. In all the affairs of human life, social as well as political, I have remarked that courtesies of a small and trivial character are the ones which strike deep- esttto the grateful and appreciating heart. -Henry Clay Character is like white paper, if once blotted, it can hardly ever be made as white as before. Beautiful feet are those that go On kindly ministries to and fro, Down lowliest ways, if God wills it so. Beautiful lives are those that bless Silent rivers of happiness, Whose hidden fountains but few may guess. -Ellen P. Senior Blawg THE CAMPBELL'S ARE COMING, the senior play, one of .the best elvenwitnessed by the local stage enthusiasts, was directed by Miss Alice irgin. The play, a three-act comedy, was centered around thelovable old Grand- mother Brannigan, CDonna Dowacterb and her three grand-children- Dick CRay Kammj, Betty C Betty Kendalll, and Kaye QEileen Hancoxh. Kaye fell in love with Kingston Campbell CArt Robertsj, the well educated son of Mrs. Augusta Campbell Clmogene Stonekingj. Rather than have Kaye married to Kingston, the Brannigans' decided to pretend they were ignorant Hillbillies so that Kaye would marry her childhood sweetheart, Jeff Scudder CKenny Haysl. Jeff's uncle, Cyrus Scudder CForrest Stockwellj was helpful in the plot as well as trying to talk Ma Brannigan into marry- ing him. Catalpa Tapp CEleanor Simmonsb was the young hillbilly maid who worked for Ma Brannigan. Her Pa, Bildad Tapp CDon Aleshirel upset the Campbell s society act, when he proved that Mrs, Augusta Campbell was his sister. Catalpa decided that she and Pap would go and spend a few months with the Campbell's and take all the kids along. The Campbells went back home just as financially embarassed as when they came with the intentions of marrying into a wealthy family and getting their money. The Brannigan's settled back downto ordinary life with a little tighter knot of friendship tying them to the Scudder family. This suggestion created considerable interest and immediately a staff was chosen from the junior and senior class- es. The editor was chosen from the senior class while his two assistants were a junior and a senior. The remaining members were elected upon the basis of capability making no difference whether they were juniors or seniors. The staff was composed of the following students: Forrest Stockwell, Editor, Donald Aleshire, and Harry Lee Rash, Assistant Editors, Dolores Phillips, Ross Sargent, and Bob Cox, Circulation Managers, Pat Kepner, Art Editor, Betty Hillyer, Dope Editor, Kenny Hays, Sports Editorg Avis Jean McCutchan, Grade Reporter. iiihrarg The library staff is composed of Plymouth High School students inter- ested in helping with the library work. Each student is assigned certain periods during the week when he is in charge of the library. Duties of the librarians include: Checking books in and out of the library, making the cards for the new books, putting the books back on the shelves in the proper places, keeping the shelves and the rest of the library in order, and taking care of the magazine rack. H RUBBE R ! ighgairal THE GAME IS ON Each day of our lives there's a game we all play And none are mere spectators here Who sit on the sidelines apart from the fray To cavil and boo, or to cheer. There are few stellar roles in this contest called life, But there's something that each one can do, Never think of small moment your part in the strife For the team is depending on you. There are times when the outlook is not very bright And our spirits are heavy with dread, But the least extra effort may win for the right When the issue just hangs by a thread. Our goal may be stakes that are worthy and high And each day with new chances rife, To boast for our team with a sturdier try, As we play in this game of life. -B. L. Bruce We can't all play a winning game, Someone is sure to loseg Yet we can play so that our name N o one may dare accuse That when the Master Referee scores against our name, It won't be whether we've Won or lost, But how we played the game. It ain't the individual Or the army as a whole, But the everlasting team work Of every blooming soul. C55-X.A. The G.A.A. has been an active club in Plymouth High School for many years. This year we held a bake sale from which we made 315. Our biggest money making project of this year was a Barn Dance made up of all home talent. In April we gave a Variety Show, the talent all coming from the G.A.A. This enjoyable event made fun for all who aided in producing it. For the first time in our school history we are having a Play Day. All the girls are looking forward to that day and all the fun they will have. Donna Dowacter has served as our president. Joan Aleshire served as our vice-president, Avis Jean McCutchan as treasurer and Pat McCutchan as the point keeper. Donna Dowacter and Pat McCutchan attended G.A.A. camp last sum- mer. This year Plymouth G.A.A. will take a week-end trip to Chicago rather than send a delegate to camp. C5.A.5X. Many great things have been done over and on me. Before telling some of the things, I will first relate my life to you. I was born in a factory many miles from here. After I was old enough to travel, a gentleman came in and bought me. He said he was taking me to some town named Plymouth, and thatl was to be used in the high school there. When I arrived in Plymouth, Iwas taken directly to the gym, and hung over a bright, shiny fioor. During the years of 1948-1949, my work has been very pleasant. At first I didn't see much of the girl's P. E. classes. Then, came winter, and the girls got so they took me down off my hook and stretched me out on that shiny floor. Before long, the girls began tramping all over my back, not at all being careful where they stepped. Then I began noticing what the girls were doing. They would run up and dive over one, two, three, four, and sometimes five and six girls who were down on their hands and knees. I like these girls, every one of them. You know, they got so they could tumble and I hardly felt them. They got so they could make pyramids, and I could actually leave my eyes open and watch them. On the whole, Iwould say that I am proud of these girls who have accomplished a lot this year, and I know that I am doubly proud to say that, I am the mat. l g , , 1 .- ' 'sa , .-ld: , I w I r 1 , r 4 X w L ' f Baseball Quite a few P.H.S. boys enjoyed playing baseball last fall. The Ply- mouth club swingers won three games and dropped two. They defeated Mendon twice and Arenzville once. The Hawks two losses were handed to them by Colchester. At the beginning of the season, D. Boos and D. Ale- shire were Coach Schnake's starting battery. Later, this was changed to D. Aleshire and H. Rash. The pitchers had very good instruction since it came from a very good pitcher. Coach Schnake is quite a mound master. The first game was with Colchester, and they trounced the Hawks by a 14-4 score. For the next game, Plymouth again met Colchester and made a much better showing, but because of numerous infield and outield errors, Colchester repeated the outcome of the previous game and won 6-3. The Blackhawks then went to Mendon and scalped them 9-0, behind the brilliant pitching of D. Aleshire. There were very few errors this time. Next the Plymouth nine traveled to Arenzville, to come back a 5-3 Victor. The first ground double play was made here CI-Iitz to Hays to Boosb. The next game was with Mendon, here, and D. Boos again worked from the mound and collected 16 strikeouts. This was the best job Boos has ever turned in from the mound. The Hawks held Mendon scoreless again while scoring 7 runs, one of which was a home run through the infield by Hitz. For these five games, D. Aleshire swung the most accurate bat, hitting over .400. Baseball will again be taken up with the coming of spring. Z5maehall First row, left to right: Coach Schnake, Forrest Stockwell, Don Aleshire, Kenny Hays, Marion Simmons, and Ray Kamm. ' Zgauakeihall The Plymouth High School Blackhawks of 1949 proved themselves worthy of wearing the same suits as last year's ever powerful Hawks This year's team survived the season with a nineteen and five record. Coach Schnake had five men from the team which last year won twenty-two and lost four. These men were: F. Stockwell, a veteran guard who handled the ball in the back-courtg D. Aleshire, who had a lot of trouble the first of last season and was out of the playing much of the year, but made up for this by scoring 418 points this season 5 K. Hays, who played running mate to R. Ale- shire in the forward slot last yearg H. Rash and R. Sargent moved up from the second five to complete the first five of this year's team. Coming up from the second team to become the reserves were: D. Miller, who proved he had what it took when Hays was out for two games with a bad shoulder 9 J. Hitz, J. Stoneking, D. Boos and L. Lovell. Lovell decided to become mana- ger. Jim Rankin moved in from Cuba, Illinois in December and became eli- gible in January. The five games the Blackhawks lost were to Dallas City, Parochial of Nauvoo, Augusta, Hamilton, and again to Parochial. The Hawks were beaten for the first time by Dallas City in a very close game by a score of 59-54. Blackhawks were one point when R. Sargent and D. Aleshire were lost on personals. Dallas City took advantage of Plymouth's frantic press and hit the hoop for two more baskets. Parochial of Nauvoo beat the Hawks nine points in the Blind Tournament. Parochial's 6' 4 center was a little too much for them. In the County Tourney, Augusta beat our team in a close one 21-20. Next Hamilton came to Plymouth and handed them their first home game defeat in two seasons by a score of 59-50. This game, like the Dallas game, was lost on personal fouls. In the Regional at Carthage, Parochial slaughtered the Blackhawks. This was also caused par- tially by personals. There's a slight catch in the Coach's rule. It states, Any man who doesn't come out for track, cannot play basketball next year. That could have something to do with the turnout. Some of the boys entering these res- pective events are: D. Boos, J. Robinson, B. Burton-shot putg R. Kamm-1 mile g J. Ran- kin and H. Rash-100 yard dashg J.
