In 1860, for instance, girls in hoop-skirts and boys in fitted trousers went to school in a building that would seem drab to us mod- ern students in our knee-length skirts and chinos. And who knows what another cen- tury will bring to our school and its stu- dents? Our predecessors were generally more earnest scholars than most of us. One hundred years ago the price of an educa- tion was hard work. Students of 1860 had tocontend with Declamation and Greek, while to us Latin seems unbeiiriihiy diffi- cult. The standards of education follow the changing patterns of time. ' Yet despite the outward differences in our schools over the period of one hundred years, we are bound to those in the past, as to those in the future, by a common goal. education. AN ASSOCIATION CHERISHED .R V s-1 Our advisor at his high school graduation 9' ,s. We the students, and especially the year- book staff, here express our gratitude to Mr. Roland Holmes for his help and backing. He has been a friend, as well as a teacher and counsellor, to each of us who has known him. During the time that Mr. Holmes has served as advisor for the Pilgrim, he has weathered feuds, insufficient funds, and at M Q ,Urn Mr. Holmes teaches English . deadlines to help produce a new and better yearbook each year. We are proud of our Pilgrim, but without him, it could never have been written and published. Therefore, to recognize the tremendous work that this man has done, we offer him our highest compliment by dedicating to him the 1960 Pilgrim. 6 l ADMINISTRATIGN To the members of the Class of 1960 go my sincere Wishes for success and hap- piness. A century ago not many girls attended schools, and all students who did attend, walked. Teachers believed strictly in the three R's and had not forgotten the use of the rod. There were few school social activities, and a pupil's progress depended solely on his ambition. Today our schools aim for a well-rounded and thorough education for everyone. We are allowed to govern our school in part, but we always have advisers to rely on. An active social life through extracurricular activi- ties is an important part of our schooling. Profiting from past experiences, the present educational system is constantly improving its preparation of the citizens of tomorrow. ,-lj rely, . In this opening game, Plymouth High showed a faltering defensive unit, but Dick Silva and Mike Souza led Plymouth fans to expect excellent offensive play in coming games. Rockland: Plymouth High took revenge on Rock- land High for the Bridgewater defeat. The Blue Eagles chalked up sixteen first downs and two hun- dred and fifty-nine yards rushing. Roger Travassos and Mike Figlioli led the Plymouth defense, holding Rockland to a minimum of yardage. Middleboro: Plymouth played host to Middleboro for the third game. The breakaway running of Mid- dleboro's Rod Berry and Mike Finneran cracked the Blue Eagle defense. Plymouth's thrilling score came when Dick Silva threw a thirty-five yard pass to a finger-tip catch by Bob Rego. Mr. Jack Sarson, Coach: Mr. Joe DeSisto, Asst. Coachg Co-Captains: Barry Maffini, Richard Silva, Michael Souzag Mr. Henry Crier, Asst. Coachg Mr. Mario Romano, Athletic Director. Leland's Whitman: Bobby Guidaboni replac- ed sidelined Dick Silva in the fourth game. Inexperience and Whitman dominated Plymouth. An intercepted pass and sixty-five yard runback by Bobby Rego, produced the only score for the Blue Eagles. Unfortunately the play was called back by penalty. Abington: Bob Guidaboni called the signals on the muddy Abington field. He threw a pass to Mike Figlioli for Plymouth's lone score. Mike Souza and Plymouth were robbed of a touch- down when the referee called out of bounds on what was discovered to be the wrong line. Falmouth: Plymouth, with five men sidelined, met a strong Falmouth club for the sixth game. The Blue Eagles fought desparately holding their opponents in the first half to a minimum of points. In the second half, however, the Blue Eagles falter- ed, and Falmouth broke loose. Randolph: In the seventh game, Plymouth played host to powerful Randolph. Bob DiSimone and all- scholastic Phil Carlino proved too strong for Plymouth. Plymouth lost twice that day, the game and Dick Silva when he reinjured his knee and never saw action again. Scituate: A spirited Scituate team played host to the Blue Eagles for the eighth game. Led by Bob Guda- boni, Plymouth got off to a very good start. Suddenly upended by a pass in- terception, Plymouth was never the same. Scituate dominated the rest of the game. Silver Lake: A large crowd was on hand for the Thanksgiving Day clas- sic between Silver Lake High and Plymouth High. In a free-scoring match, the Blue Eagles downed the Lakers in traditional fashion with Guidaboni, Keller, Souza, Maffini, and Rego flashing for Plymouth. Both Bobby and Jimmy played the back court for Plymouth during the regular playing season. Want a lift? Well, Whitey! Don't just do something, stand there! Seniors Bob Rego and Whitey Hall were regular starters for the Blue Eagles. Rego played at one of the forward positions and Hall played center. Tom Bussolari, another senior, saw plenty of action, alternating with Hall at center. The most spectatcular game played by Plymouth was its second league game With Middleboro. The game went into two over- times before the Eagles pulled out a victory. The score at the final buzzer was Plymouth 77, Middleboro 74. During the first overtime, with seven seconds remaining and Plymouth leading by two points, Jerry Marshall, one of Middle- boro's All-Star players, sank a two-pointer to tie the score up again. In the second over- time, Plymouth dominated the backboards and sank shots with deadly accuracy to Walk off the floor smiling.
