The Pilgrim cordially invites you to come along with us as we scan past horizons, recollecting those moments of happiness and seriousness which have combined to make this past year a memorable one. Through the magic of the camera, perhaps you'll chuckle with us as we candidly present ourselves, complete with thumb-nail sketches. We'll meet the mighty Blue Eagles of football, basketball, baseball, and track and reminisce about such social highlights as Stardust and Cupid's Capers. Creative effort also rears its head in the field of science, which plays such an important and vital role in the world today. And now, forward we go-on to new horizons, fortified with confidence and courage that we can face the challenge ahead. .5152 review the... It is with a great deal of pleasure that we welcome you, Chester A. Sweatt, to our school system and our town. The office of Superintendent of School is not one where there is frequent con- tact with the student body, and there are not many opportunities to develop friendships. But we have three years of memories to look back on, from the first day of our high school life to the day we must end it when we receive our diplo- mas. First we were introduced to the ten-cent-a- week plan, which gave us many privileges, such as entering our home games free and cheering our various teams on to their many victories. Belonging to the S.A.S. was another new ex- perience, because we could each feel the pride in ourselves and in our school as we contributed our nickles to some charitable cause. None of us will ever forget that afternoon of November 17, 1956, when our football team defeated Silver Lake for a victory at last for our boys. We were wide-eyed with excitement as we witnessed our first installation of the National Honor Society- undoubtedly the most impressive assembly of the year. And then came our own first dance- the Sophomore Hop on March 29, 1957, and it was a great success as we began our money- making projects toward graduation. We will never forget those days in the spring of 1957, during which many of our boys stayed out all night helping to put under control that horrible fire which destroyed so much property. Then came june, and we were sad to see many of our pals graduate. However, we had Septem- ber to think of, and all the fun our junior year would bring. Our junior year started with tremendous ex- citement as our football season ended with a record of six wins and two losses. And then in january, under the direction of Mrs. Urann, Patchwork, the play within the play, was presented to the school. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, and every participant was commend- ed for his successful performance. The high- light of our junior year was, of course, our junior Prom. Under the supervision of Miss Downey and Mrs. Gardner, Stardust was a tremendous success, and everyone worked to- gether to make it a wonderful evening. But then came june again, and this time graduation seemed a bit sadder because of a1l our friends' graduating, and also because Mr. Mongan and Miss Downey would not be there when we re- turned to school in the fall. But in the fall, we would be seniors, and all the promised fun and activities were eagerly anticipated. XVhen September came we once again launch- ed into a successful football season with a record of seven wins and two losses. Our Thanksgiving Day game was the highlight of our football season. The weather was brisk and beautiful, and when Plymouth downed Silver Lake 28-14, for Plymouth fans the day ended perfectly. Other incidents which occurred during our senior year were the bomb scares. All students were evacuated and school was closed down. Of course, everyone was thrilled at getting a day off from school, but who would ever dream such a thing could happen to us! There are still many surprises and a great deal of fun left in our Senior year, but june will soon be here again, and at last we must leave Plymouth High forever. Although graduation brings sadness we have all these wonderful memories to look back on. They will be locked in our hearts forever! ' - M -N Ladies of the Mop jacob Comes Home 53 I 1 LITERARY The voices of Luboffis Choir filled the room, and the beautiful amber star threw a soft, serene glow on the small boy listening very intently to the record player. Ilow often I had seen the star, and yet each time it made by spine tingle in an awesome way. The star was lit twice a year, April I5 and November 7, the days eominemorating the deaths of my father's parents, two people whom I had never seen-never actually seen, that is. You see, I have the strange feeling of knowing these people as though they were a part of my everyday life. I can almost see them, jacob and Bessie. Ile was a small man with skillful, delicate hands, an artist in his love for beauty and per- fection. She was a frail little woman with dark hair and deep blue eyes. They came from Lithuania in their teens to this strange land to marry and raise their family, seven girls and four boys. -lacob was a cabinet maker, an excellent one, so l've been told. Ile had a great appreciation for line mnsic and a strong love for dogs. At one period, near the end of his lille, he made it a hobby of raising beagles. Bessie was a quiet, withdrawn woman with the serene beauty that casts a peaceful calm on all around her. There are moments when I think of her and seem to feel that very cahn. As a little girl I can remember the times my father told me about my graiidpareiits-stories of the crowded house. all the children. the work. the violin case my grandfather had made for one of his daughters. I eould listen to those stories for hours, then go to my room and lie on the bed to ery. I could never really understand why I eried, and now that I'm older I can only guess. l'erhaps I eried lor the things mv grandparents never had, perhaps I cried for the hardships I imagined they endured, the difficulty of sup- porting such a large family, the long hours of hard work, the few, if any luxuries, the strange- ness of a new country, perhaps I cried for my- self, for never having known them. How well I remember that one trip to Uncle Henry's and Aunt Dora's, Graiidfathefs brother and sister-in-law. just being with this uncle and aunt made me feel closer to my grandparents. Oli, you look so like your grandmother, ex- claimed Uncle Henry, uperhaps a little bigger, but nevertheless her likenessf, I swelled with pride and politely thanked him. How could I tell him how good he had made me feel? How could I tell anyone? They might think me a silly, fanciful, little girl if they had known my thoughts. I seem to have forgotten the small boy and the record player. He's my brother, joey, and he is very much like his grandfather, so they say, in his appreciation for music. I can remember, when we were smaller children, my clever way of avoiding arguments. I would seat him by the record player and put on some music. He would sit enthralled for hours, and my father often re- marked: Joes love of music is inherited from his grandfather. I see reflections of my grandparents every- where. -Ioey's love of music. my resemblance to grandmotlier. Dads skill with his hands, Uncle IIenry's love of paintings and of beauty. It seems we all have some trace of an appreciation or a skill that qlacob and Bessie once had. Each time I look at the beautiful amber star I feel very close to my grandparents, and I'm sure that they too must feel close to me. JACKIE KELLER, '60 MY SICK SHADOW Alas! Bridgewater: Bridgewater High played host to the Plymouth Blue Eagles on September 29, in a delayed opener. Plymouth scored early in the first quarter and maintained the lead throughout the game, winning 24 to 14. Touchdowns were scored by Ghidoni, Romano, and Anderson. All extra point attempts were successful. Rockland: The following week Plymouth faced a strong Rockland team at Siever Field. In the third quarter, Rockland scored upsetting Ply- mouthis 14 to 8 lead. Despite a last minute surge by Plymouth, Rockland went home with a decisive 16 to 14 victory. Middleboro: Stinging from their previous weekis defeat, the Blue Eagles traveled to Middleboro and came home with a 28 to 20 victory. Touch- downs were scored by Beal, Ragazzini, Romano, and Ghidoni. Whit1r2an: On October 18, Whitman journeyed to Plymouth and scored all four touchdowns on quick openings and long runs. It was the first time in two years that a Plymouth team had been shut out. Abington: The entire Plymouth squad saw action as the Shiretowners romped over Abington 38 to 141 Touchdowns were scored by Romano, Ghidoni, and Ragazzini, with extra points by Romano, Anderson, and Souza. The only safety of the season was scored by Travassos. QCon- tinued on page 761 Hit em low, Rags! Scituate: Plymouth's offense ran wild to defeat a strong Scituate club in a free- scoring battle 34 to 32. Denny Rags romped for three touchdowns, while Maffini and Anderson each scored one. Romano and Chidoni scored the extra points. Randolph: On November 8, the Blue Eagles defeated a strong Randolph team 34 to 26 in a highly spirited contest. Al- though the Shiretowners led throughout the game, the Randolph Eleven tied the score at 26 to 26 with little over one minute remaining. After a series of Romano to Ragazzini passes, Clem ran around his right end for the winning T.D. with only seconds to go. Barnstable: The following Saturday Plymouth traveled to Hyannis to meet the Red Raiders of Barnstable. After a poor first half, the Plymouth club came to life and at the final whistle led 30 to 8. The day was sparked by Denny Rags, who scored four touchdowns! Silver Lake: On Thanksgiving morning the first annual football classic between Plymouth High and Silver Lake Region- al High was played ,at Siever Field. A capacity crowd watched the Blue Eagles defeat the Lakers 28 to 14. This was the seventh victory for the Blue Eagles and the climax of a very successful sea- son. Credit was due to not only the scoring punch of the backs, but also to the stalwart play of the line. 'tircl f' '--1 1 , - 4- , ,- 1 -. , . Y 1 v - - A ' sl -- fu- -. To culminate the season, the team played Oliver Ames High School at the Boston Gardens. Despite their narrow defeat 57 to 64, the entire Plymouth squad deserved commendation for such a fine performance. It was the first time that a Ply- mouth team had played at the C-ardenv since 1953. Only through his untiring efforts could the team have attained such heights. Rec- ognition is also in store for our co-captains Frank Anderson and Clem Romano, who led the Eagles brilliantly as they stole passes, set up plays, and showed the leadership that rated them their positions. Both men played three years of varsity basketball, scoring a fantastic total of nearly 1800 points between them. The rebounding of Steve Billey, the ball handling of Larry Martin, and the play-making of Roy Kuhn, combined with the co-captains' abilities were directly responsible for the outstanding record of the 1958-59 season. Although losing the first fivei' at graduation, prospects for the future of basketball at Ply- mouth High look very bright. There is a fine nucleus in the freshman and junior varsity squads which undoubtedly will be the springing board for Plymouthis flight to the top. Cet your hand out of the way. The 1958 baseball team, under the fine coaching of Mr. Antone Spath, compiled an excellent record of 10 wins and 4 losses. Although com- posed mostly of underclassmen, the boys showed outstanding ability. Much of the seasonls suc- cess, however, was due to the dependable per- formance of the seniors. Without the spirit of Captain Cavoni, the hitting of Bill Nagle, the defense of Bob Souza, the pitching of joe C and the speed of Howie Borsari Plymo record would undoubtedly not haxe beel good. Despite these losses at Uriduation combination of returning xarsity and ente freshman should provide the formula for ant successful season. ,mi 'qw-:wi I f I f3,jgy.,': gig:-4 ,iv L- -115' . were if 17 , lsr? . .. a 55' - J 33: 2 M mg 4 X, 1 f. 1.7 pf 59 1 'A' f M017 tw 5 9 Q I y g Y I p George Cavoni William Nagle Clement Romano Dennis Ragazzim Richard Silva Coach Antone Sp Front Row: Coach Cl de Crai , Frank Anderson, Ro Kuhn, ose h Cotti, Howard Borsari Robert Sol 7 7 i 7 7 C Back How: Andrew Guerra, Thomas Viera, Irving Harding, Leo XVirzburger, Michael Souza Philip Raym Robert Martin, William Clark, Robert Rego. 1958 BASEBALL SCOREBOARD Plymouth vs. Whitman ...... ......... ........ 2 - 3 Plymouth vs. Rockland .... . ...... 23-1 Plymouth vs. Abington ..... ......... 1 1-1 Plymouth vs. Middleboro ...... ..... 2 -1 Plymouth vs. Hingham ......... ....., 7 -5 Plymouth vs. Silver Lake . .... .. 6-1 Plymouth vs. Whitman .......,............. . 5-4 VVareham . To the following we extend our sincere thanks: Miss Rose Briggs for obtaining permission to use Mrs. Ellis Brewsteris drawing of the Pilgrims, Progress for our end pages. Mrs. Dickson and Ted, for their many services rendered in connection with the most valuable part of the book-the photography. All those who typed who were not on the regular typing staff. Pat Voght for her clever cover design and other art Work. Leo Voght, the most loyal supporter and booster, who had no staff title but who aided the Pilgrim through to its comple- tion supplying humor with his many witty captions. Bruce Emond for not only doing the greatest job any business editor has ever done, but also for typing and setting up of the copy. One of our photography editors Nancy V erre, who went beyond the call of duty and stayed with the Pilgrim until it was sent to press. Mrs. XVhiting and her office girls, who were always willing and ready to help. Our advertisers for supporting the 1959 Pilgrim. The faculty for their patience when classes were interrupted for the taking of group pictures. Mr. Robert Vantine of the Delmar Print- ing Company for his advice and assistance in planning layout and production. XVithout the aid of these wonderful people we, the editors, could never have met the dead-linev for the Pilgrim of ,59.
