HE CLASS OF '58 PRESENTS THE PILGRI Sw-.ez PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHUUL Place: pbffnouthy Mass. 144 we dedicate ma pray. . . .M Pmzum. vm. www. agenda . . Much of the joy in life consists of doing perfectly, or at least to the best of one's ability, the tasks which are set before him. There is a certain sense of satisfaction in such accomplishment - full, exact, and com- plete-which the shallow man who leaves his work in a half-finished condition can never know. Persistence to completion turns work into art. The smallest thing, done well, becomes aesthetic. lt is in such a conscientious manner that Mr. Edgar J. Mongan has served for the past nineteen years as our principal. He has earned the respect of his pupils and teachers throughout his years of service to the Plymouth High School. The warmth of his personal interest in each of us has created an atmosphere of comradeship, vital in any house of learning. He has used his many years of teaching as an aid to give us the best in instructors and courses. As counselor and advisor his influence has spread beyond the realm of Plymouth High. The citizens of Plymouth, young and old, know him as a friend and neighbor. We appreciate all you have done for us and long will you remain dear to our hearts. Best wishes to you, Mr. Mongan, in all your future plans. You Get What You Pay For and You Pay For What You Get In the ominous light cast by Sputniks I and II, every American should engrave on his heart these words of Somerset Maugham: If a nation values anything more than its freedom it will lose its freedom, and the irony of it is, that if it is money or comfort that it values more, it will lose that too. And every high school pupil can para- phrase those words as follows: If a boy for girly values anything more than his education he will lose his education, and the irony of it is that if it is his car for girl friend, or sports, or movies, etc.J that he values more, he will lose that too. A Soviet teacher, asked by an American reporter whether she thought it more im- portant to make children happy or to make them useful, replied: How can they be happy if they are not useful? Think it over, she's right. You don't get something for nothing. fs '45555' fa V Q' X ,Q M k wx 1,5 ,N-A x dm R. r 5 v 1 if I' ' fs 5 f W, vi . ,, Q, ' wr .meg . , 4 F, . .3 mf' 1: ' J Q. And away we go! Bridgewater: Under its new coaches, Jack Sarson and Joe DeSisto, the Plymouth High Eleven played host to the Gold and Red of Bridgewater High on September 22. On the first play from scrimmage, Tony Ghelfi of Bridgewater made a brilliant run off tackle into the end zone for a touchdown. However Plymouth, fighting all the way, captured two points on a safety. The score ended Plymouth two, Bridgewater seven, in a well-fought game. Rockland: The following week the Blue and White played the much-favored Rockland at Rockland. With outstanding running by Robischeau, Travassos, and Ragazzini, the Shiretowners upset Rockland twenty-eight to twelve. The line play was crisp and tough with each man holding his ground well. Led by Tommy Brewster and Bob Ghidoni, Rockland's aerial attack was also stopped. Middleboro: The following week Plymouth High was upset by Middleboro, nineteen to twelve. Dennis Ragazzini scored all twelve points for Plymouth. Plymouth was without the service of cocaptain Alan Brini. Abington: After a two-week layoff, Plymouth travelled to Abington to entertain the Green Wave. After a poor first half, the Plymouth touchdown machine started producing with Wayne Travassos steamrolling for two touchdowns and Ragazzini scoring one. Wayne Stefani, who re- placed Robert Zaniboni, did an outstanding job. Plymouth scored eighteen, Abington zero. Bourne: On a rain-soaked field, Plymouth chalked up its third win of the season. With Ragaz- zini making two touchdowns and Robischeau another around left end, Plymouth's running attack went unhampered by the poor weather. A Romano-to-Anderson pass clicked for the final touch- down of the game. The defense of Joe DeSisto's forward wall, led by cocaptains George Gavoni and Alan Brini, was outstanding, with Bourne being able to gain only seventy-eight yards in thirty-one tries. Plymouth chalked up twenty-six, Bourne nothing. Randolph: The keyed-up Shiretowners upset the favored Blue-Devils of Randolph twenty-five to thirteen. After Randolph scored, Plymouth recovered a fumble and Travassos plunged for a touchdown. With seconds remaining in the first half, Romano threw a touchdown pass to Ragaz- zini. Travassos and Robischeau scored in the second half and Billey added an extra point. Silver Lake: The biggest rivalry of the year was against Silver Lake. The first half was dom- inated by Plymouth, but they didn't score. After Silver Lake scored, Travassos plunged through center for the TD. In the fourth quarter, Robischeau scored and Ragazzini provided the extra point. Plymouth tallied thirteen points, Silver Lake twelve. Barnstable: Barnstable was the last game of the season for the Shiretowners. Travassos and Robischeau scored the touchdowns and Billey scored the extra points, making the final score Plymouth fourteen, Barnstable thirteen. Plymouth High, winding up its 1957 football schedule on November 23, ended one of its most successful seasons since 1947. The victory over Barnstable was the fifth straight win for Plymouth. The eight-game schedule was run off with six victories and two defeats. Credit should be given coaches Jack Sarson and Joe DeSisto for their outstanding work which brought Plymouth High School into the winning column in the pages of football history. After an easy victory, Plymouth went on to beat Hingham. However, the next game, with Plymouth meeting its arch rival, Silver Lake, told a different story. At the end of the first half, the Rogers' men were up by eighteen points, but the final score was in favor of Silver Lake. Our next game was with the fighting Red and Black of Whitman. Whitman, with their veteran team and on their own court, set Plymouth back for its second defeat in four games. Plymouth had to win the rest of its games to stay in contention for the Old Colony League Championship. Plymouth met Wareham at Plymouth and de- feated them. Against Rockland and Abington, Plymouth had easy victories and ended the first half of the season with a five and two record. As the second half of the season began, Plymouth won easily over Middleboro and Hingham. Plymouth then met the Lakers for the second time and defeated them after a good battle. Plymouth then was hot for the championship. They took on Whitman at Plymouth and defeated them by four points. For the best game of the season the Blue and White traveled to Wareham. Wareham had been defeated on their own court only once. The week before, when Whitman played Wareham, Whitman defeated the Blue and White of Wareham by two points. Each team knew they had to win this game to stay in competition for the cham- pionship. After a hard and gruesome battle, Plymouth managed to win by two points. The Coach Rogers' men finished the season with easy victories over Rockland and Abington. Plymouth went undefeated in the second half of the season and ended the 1957-1958 campaign with a twelve and two record. This season was the best Plymouth has had in several years. Whitman, who also had a twelve and two record, ended with a tie for first place with us. Whitman and Plymouth met at Silver Lake High School. After a hard fought game for the champion- ship, Whitman was able to squeeze by Plymouth. Even though Plymouth didn't win the championship, a great deal of credit should be given to Coach Rogers. He formed and developed this team that was an underdog almost all season. .-'nv' Where's the Basket?
