THE YEAR AFTER NEXT Two years ago a boy was graduated from this school. Last week from half-way across the world he sent me this message: I have learned this from experience and firmly believe it: The public schools are the strongest fortiHcations of liberty, and those who dedicate their lives to guarding these posts are among the brave few we can never forget or repay. I shall not disclose his identity for I think that might embarrass him, but of course it is heart-warming to get an endorsement of that kind and especially from such a source, since I'm sure the boy has no axe to grind, Though to be completely honest, I think he gives to us, his teachers, more honor than we may deserve. But that is not what I want to talk about, Rather it is the message that underlies his words, for what the boy is trying to say is something of this sort: Why couldn't I have seen when I was in school the things that are so clear to me now? Why didn't I learn then what now I know would have been so much to my advantage? Why did I tand so many more like mel resist instead of accept? Must the teacher always force upon me the things that are for my good? Why? I shan't mince words hereg this matter is too serious to call for a dis- play of tact. And most of you are just as capable of straight thinking in regard to it as I am-and you can stand unvarnished talk. You know perfectly well that the heel-dragging and obstructionism and resistance that clusters around school obligations is set up by those of you who want to have all the privileges and prerogatives of an adult but refuse to assume the responsibilities that always must go with them. To put it bluntly they are the ones who are afraid to grow up. To hear them tell it one would think that they are demanding only that which is in keeping with their dignity and what they conceive to be their superior status, but the plain truth is that they want to be babied. After the Civil War General Robert E. Lee became a teacher, and one day when asked by a father what he fthe fatherb should teach his son, said: Teach him to deny himself , for Lee knew that self-indulgence is the easiest of habits and can most thoroughly destroy character. He could have added: Sweet are the uses of adversity. It used to be that boys and girls were brought up to expect no favors, to ask only for what they were entitled, to expect only what they deserved -and thus could prove themselves to be men and women.
